I'd say throughout my entire career as a trainer, this is one of the top 5 exercises I see being performed incorrectly in the gym. If the goal is to target triceps and remove as much chest out of the movement as possible, you need to bring the bar down over your torso. YES, you will not be able to lift as much weight as a traditional bench press... but what does that have to do with anything? Arent we trying to focus on TRICEPS? So switch-up your workouts and try adding close-grip bench press with proper form for a few weeks. I haven’t found time or the motivation to workout 5x a week like I used too, I’m lucky to do 3x a week. But mostly 2x a week. What workout routines work best for guys in my situation? Working out 5x a week isn’t feasible since me and my wife both work and take turns caring for our baby. I remember getting amazing results in 2010 following your drop set routine for chest. Did it yesterday was outta the gym in 30 minutes. Need a routine like that quick and effective. Thanks man you’re holding it down for us natural guy’s pushing 40.

Hey Scott, for people with very limited equipment like myself, would this exercise be just as effective with dumbells? I dont have access to a bench press, so I am having to do everything with dumbells.

I use to do it that way, but when you bring it low on your body and load heavy, you risk injury to shoulders. Instead, I bring the bar straight down to my neck, and press only using triceps
Ive also become trapped under the weight pressing heavy down low. Neck is risky, so I always start light at 135 and progressively overload to 225 or more.@@ScottHermanFitness

Yes definitely, if you want to target your triceps more on a push-up you need to have your hands more in-line with your torso not your chest

Ive over exerted my shoulder with the method you shown. Only good with light weight. Slower reps.
