My youngest at 14 is 1/2 Hopi Native American, registered with her tribe in AZ and who participates in all of the Hopi tribal traditions (dances, customs, language).
I am 59...I grew up in NY playing my acoustic guitar from a very early age, training myself to sing like Rita Coolidge, Emmylou Harris and other ladies of that time whose songs I eventually sang to my children, my first who passed 33 years ago at 7.5 months after being born at 1 pound and hanging on to life those few months, her two siblings born after her and are now on their own and my youngest, now 14 all of whom I sang to sleep while nursing them. I am blessed to be a mother of each of my children, so unique and beautiful in their own way. This song in particular even now when I sing carries me to a place of comfort and peace....

Thanks for both responses; just went to ritacoolidge dot com website, and will now look up more info on "Walela." Beautiful music; really enjoyed the video on RUclips describing the music and soul philosophy behind it. Very pleased to find out Rita won the "Nammy." Didn't know anything about this!

A lot of what people call New Age is really very old pre-Christian teachings. My great Grandmother who didn't know how to read would say that all things in nature had a spirit and a mind of their own. That they were aware not only of each other but of everyone about them. She was a bone setter and a midwife with a heart of Gold.

I love this song! I picked it up quicker than any song I've ever heard which is strange because I don't even speak Cherokee, only English and a few words in Swahili and French. This is such a great song to sing and if I'm ever in a band I'll try to mix english and Cherokee with a few other languages.

Also check out the original group "Ulali" their music is breathtaking and soulful. They have some clips on youtube and are Tuscarora and Apache. Other similar female native groups are Asani and M'Girl ( both Canadian native groups). Their music is wonderful and relaxing, very similar to Walela.

You gotta realize Courtney..when ya look up Rita Coolidge(the first woman in the video)...she was a 60's flower child folk and country singer for awhile, so yes, some of their philosophy may be a bit new age, depending on your age, how you were raised, and where you grew up.

All societies used to worship the sun all over the world. Even christianity was based indirectly on it, but replaced a man instead of the sun. Carl Sagan once said we are the children of the stars.
Is there an equivalent of astrology/astronomy in Native American culture?

My dad was middle eastern. He told me that originally the people of his country Persia, which became Iran, were not Islamic but we're a religion based on the Sun. Islam became the dominant religion but he was raised in whatever that Sun religion was called,I forgot what he told me it was called. He wasn't devoutly religious, more spiritual, but I was surprised to know that he wasn't Muslim. His mother was Moslem/Muslim but apparently the children were raised in their fathers religion, which was that Sun religion.

Native American is generic. There are a tremendous number of tribes and their traditions and languages vary. The ladies singing are Native American. Coolidge was born in Lafayette, Tennessee. She is of Scottish and Cherokee Native American Through DNA testing many of those in some of the tribes are part European and their families have been on the reservations for well over a hundred years as well as those who live off of them.

I just wish more mixedbloods --as myself (adopted) Shawnee/Seneca/white-- were as easily accepted as those with fame. My med. brown hair/blue eyes make me no less Native.
Vasinger: not to argue, but, that's the problem with society, a person may ask for spiritual help in their own language, and others protest heathenism, because they do not understand that language. Peeluci Akotha: Sky Father in Shawnee.

Why does she have to be a "cursed white woman?" I think the more whites and not indian, non whites try to understand, and maybe adopt Native American Beliefs, the better. The "white man" needs to learn from his mistakes; his murder, enslavement, and imprisonment of not just the Native American, of who I am proudly 1/6th, but the Black Race, of which my father was, and the Japanese of whom my mother was. Hating them forever for what their ancestors did is only hurting those who hate them.
