Such a lovely story! Craske's work is beautiful, and it's so sad to think of all the pieces lost to neglect. As a gravestone restorer, I was so happy to see the Craske's graves done so nicely!

These subjects may not be as popular (as death and destruction) but are 'very' worthwhile to the few who appreciate such things.

I find all of it important, plus I couldn't do videos on just war and killings it would just get me down to much.

Thank you for sharing this. I had not heard of John Craske before, but that's not surprising since I'm from the US. I would consider him a naïve artist of the finest caliber. Primitive artists are often driven to create art come hell or high water and he fits that description. The work you showed is stunning--primitive yet sophisticated and beautifully crafted. I especially loved seeing the embroideries--gorgeous work! I'm glad some of them have survived. Textile artwork is so fragile and so easily damaged by exposure to light--and tobacco smoke residue. There's a lot that can be done to remove the tobacco smoke by conservators, but light damage is cumulative and permanent, unfortunately. Thank you again for sharing these treasures. It's made my day!

Never heard of him before but I am glad you introduced him. His work was beautiful and that was terrible of the man to ignore his 11 foot embroidery. I feel bad he got labeled an imbecile and who know what happened to him in the mental hospital. He was so lucky to have such a wonderful wife. Thank you!

I had never heard of John Craske. I’m so glad you “rediscovered “ him. The embroideries are beautiful. The colours very true. His work reminds me of the ‘naive’ artist Alfred Wallis from St Ives, Cornwall

This film made me cry my eyes out. His grave beside Laura's all crumbled. So sad. He was incredibly talented and I hope he knew that. “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (James 4:14b). I find comfort that they were avid Christians, John 5:28-29 says, "For an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment." They will be together in paradise.

Thanks for this interesting report on a great great uncle of mine. I requested a viewing of the Dunkirk piece when visiting Norwich but wasn't successful which is a shame

I just read about Julia Blackburn and the book she wrote on him, Threads. Will put that on my to read list. His embroidery looks wonderful, such a shame he wasn't more appreciated in his lifetime 😢

There is an old say and like many it is absolutely true "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" the so called experts have been responsible for ridiculing many who are now regarded as great artists such as Van Gogh and Lowry. Art is for the many not just the few.
