I'm in love with this album. I agree that Sonntag is a bit of a drag, it could have been shorter, but I do like how they decided to ride a groove for once instead of 10+ minutes of constantly evolving ideas. The production is great, the guitar work is phenomenal, and the songwriting is ridiculously clever. I'd say a it's a 10/10 from me, but I also love this band. Glad you really liked it though melon, one of the best metal releases so far in 2017.
This might actually be my AOTY so far. It's super rare that I'll put an album on and literally have it on repeat for hours at a time, but I've been doing that with this one.
I can't put it down either. It's really something else. I'm actually glad Fantano finally reviewed it, they deserve a large following. Still think he shafted Mastodon's last effort lol though this album is better imo.
This album is amazing. Glad Anthony came to his senses after not enjoying lore (which is equally amazing) Also fuck all these people complaining for a fleet foxes and Vince review. Your god emperor melon just gave this amazing album an 8/10. Do yourself a favor and listen to it
Charlie Pennington I felt like Lore was a huge step up from Dead Roots Stirring (which is still a great stoner rock album) in terms of composition and direction. The soaring melodies and leads, the tightly locked grooves of the rhythm section, and the triumphant vocals came together to form a very powerful album for me. The first time I heard the album in (bought a copy at their show, hadn't fully listened to it) I was drawn in the entire time and taken on a musical journey. I haven't listened to Reflections from start to finish yet but the tracks that I've heard feel like a continuation/expansion of the themes found on Lore. I'm going to order a copy of Reflections as soon as I can and finally dive completely into it.
I feel like Anthony's audience is very intelligent, music loving listeners and yet, it is muddled by shoe lace dragging memes and little commentary on the review itself unless it's a commerical (in the means of "RUclips humor") reaction to the album or song like his reviews to big Sean, kid Cudi, ECT. As a three year follower of his reviews, I enjoy the occasional meme, but overall would like to see some grounded reactions to his reviews. I can respectfully say the needle drop has the worst comment section for the uploader on this platform, but on the flip, the best nonsensical commentary for the average memer and Cal
Devin Gresham I wouldn't mind the memes so much if there was at least an equal amount of commenting about the actual review, but that's just not the case
SSJ Chicano I wouldn't say that you're wrong either. In the grand scheme of things, I think in some ways, (unintentionally) we view Anthony as a RUclipsr and not as a well respected music reviewer and analysis. Something like a filthy Frank or someone else in that realm.
FINALLY. I thought you were way too harsh on Lore so I'm really glad to hear you come around on them, just like you came around on Pallbearer. Greathony Reviewtano
This is the AOTY! It doesn't bring anything new, but it's really well written, and blends perfectly a lot of classic metal and rock references in a fresh and modern way. Props to Elder!
Still don't believe you gave Lore a good listen because everything you say about it just doesn't make alot of sense. go back and do yourself a favor melonman
i just listened to the first track and this honestly gives me fond memories of when I used to listen to only prog, it scratches that adventurous musical itch in my mind, but doesn't come off as overly produced or technical to turn me off, which is why i can't listen to a lot of modern prog today
Anthony I have struggled to find a current metal band I could get into. I almost believed it was a hopeless cause. But then I watched this video and I now have a new band and discography to listen to. Thanks for what you do my man. I will always listen to da man wit da best teeth in the game!
LEt's discuss then: I preferred this to Lore, but Dead Roots Stirring is still up there for me because the songs are a bit more accessible. This album feels like a Swans album in the sense that I need to make time and sit down and listen to the whole thing. But that's just me, I think his rating of decent 8 was fair. I need to give it a few more listens to pick a favorite track though. In Elders discography, Gemini is probably my favourite song.
Killbot754 Solidly stated. I for one I'm not as in love with DRS as most of the fanbase is, I think it's very good but the songs sound too alike for me and it's not as adventurous as Lore or Reflections. I LOVE Lore, it's the album that got me into Elder. It's huge, it's melodic, and it was a big step forward in songwriting, in my opinion. Plus as much as I love stoner/doom metal my true love has always been psychedelic/progressive rock, so it clicked with me. Reflections blew me away immediately. The mix is pristine, the vocals sound stronger, and the riffs/ideas are astounding. Not to mention, just like in Lore, when they go for musical beauty they really go for it. Some of the passages on Reflections are gorgeous. I also love that their album artwork just gets better and better, very fitting for the music on all of their releases. For me this is their crown jewel, but to be fair it's not like they've made a bad record!
Thanks for reviewing some Elder, melon boi. I can appreciate big names like you bringing attention to a modern metal gem like Elder. Another neat doom metal album to check out is Oak - Beyond Oblivion. They're definitely good at what they do.
The one thing I always love about theneedledrop is that he changes his video details as the years go on. I find that refreshing. New intros, outros, etc.
Solid review. Agree about Sonntag and a relatively weak finish given that Sanctuary is a highlight for many. Best / first use of lap-steel by a 'metal' band?
Vosprey I see what you mean, very cool. I really like the heavy use of reverb on his vocals, and the generous amount of moog phaser on various guitar parts across the album. The highlight for me is the Octave fuzz solo in Sanctuary, just a great performance.
You're spot on with this one, man. To me this album felt a lot more like Dead Roots, but it's very intricate and melodic, and like you said, it constantly evolves without being too overwhelming. It's just excellent record.
I accidentally discovered these guys here on youtube recently and I have to say that they are one of the coolest bands I've ever heard! This album and LORE are so so good! I can't listen to just one track, I have to hear the whole album. There's something very magical about their music.
I dig this album! Probably sounds funny, but one of the first things I thought about the riffs and guitar sounds was that it reminded me of Soundgardens Superunknown album. This isn't a constant vibe I get though, just depends on the riffs.
I fucking love Elder! Their musical evolution over time is just fantastic. Fantano felt that Lore was underwhelming but I completely fell in love with the melody and riffage on that album. Lore felt like a huge step up from their previous two albums in terms of composition and direction. Reflections is just building of off all the ideas on Lore, I think it feels like a very natural step. Bands like Elder are what keep the stoner genre alive for me,they still retain some heaviness while adding in progressive/melodic elements instead of just repeating the same riffs everyone has been playing since 69'. I'm glad to see a band from my state make it to the forefront of the genre. If you get the chance to go see Elder, fucking do it! Incredibly hard hitting, energetic performance that leaves you wondering how Nick can sing and play some guitar parts at the same time.
This is a great review. I think when you hear that a band is capable of so much, you expect so much, and maybe that's why you gave it a lower score than I did. This is one of my favorite albums in many years... I'd probably give it a 9. At the very least. Depending on the day, I feel like it's as high as a 9.5. I'd also note that I love the last tracks on Lore and Reflections, and that may be because of nostalgia. Lore's final track reminds me of raw early 90s doom metal at times, whereas Reflections' final track gives me shades of Paradise Lost's more melodic moments (pre-full blown, ill-advised 90s electronic music transformation).
i had a lot of emotional investment in dead roots stirring so i think that's mostly why i loved that one the most out of all of them. they just had these soul crushing songs with great lyrics and awesome riffs that i didnt get from reflections. not to say it's a bad album, these guys just literally cant suck, but dead roots stirring was the one that got me pumped for life.
Hey Anthony, I know you don't dive into the deathcore genre often or ever possibly, but the semi-new Shadow of Intent record Reclaimer is a huge innovation to the genre and incredibly technical. It is a masterpiece in metal and evolves the deathcore sound more than it has in years. Check it out if you can.
Well this is another thing I'm gonna have to check out, just from the description it seems like something I'd like to listen to. Will watch the review when I get the chance. Waiting for that Fleet Foxes review though!
Ey man, do you know superfood? My favourite band, I'd love to hear your review of their album "don't say that" and their singles "double dutch" and "I can't see" I'd love for these guys get the respect and acknowledgement they deserve. FYI They're a bit-pop/indy/rock/pop/Beatles-esque group
Just listened to the whole album and I tend to agree with Anthony here. What does everyone else think? Also these meme comments were funny at first but it's played out. It's time to start focusing on the music again.
It's really good. Bought it after a listen or two. I love the riff variety and song structure, but I agree with Fantano in that Sonntag totally could've done more.
Haven't heard of these guys before, this might become one of my AOTY. This is like the moments that I like about Mastodon but way bigger and better. Also, the outro of Sanctuary makes me nut
I really wasn't expecting this review from you but I am particularly pleased. I really love the sound they were going for but it seems like they get super sidetracked in the longer songs and they end a bit arbitrarily. If they had a bit more cohesive songwriting this would have been a 10 for me.
Anthony--have you ever heard "the last band before the internet"--a cult Minneapolis band called "Lifter Puller"? The former band of Craig Finn/Tad Kubler, now members of The Hold Steady? They've got lots of high-level professional reviews (Christgau, Allmusic, Pitchfork, that stuff) but are still nearly completely unknown, and I'd love to know what you think of them.
lol at how he pronnounced Sonntag. I'm just playing. I know you don't speak german. Funny enough, Today is Sonntag. Nice review Fantano. I'll be sure to cheque this one out.
Anny Bananny, you needneed to review 'Ex Eye', the new project of Colin Stetson and Greg Fox of Liturgy. I am certain that record was convieved just for you.
Dude you've really got to check out the following ... Palm - Shadow Expert Crack Cloud - Anchoring Point Guerilla Toss - GT Ultra The Psychotic Monks - Silence Slowly and Madly Shines
Solid review of a solid album, but my guy... Please review MOTU by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard!! Didn't like it too much on the first listen, but with each listen it sounds better and better, and now that I've listened to it through a couple hundred times I'd say it's their finest album to date. Looking forward to seeing you tear it apart and ruin my day.
I honestly was gonna sleep on this album, but now I think I'll give it a few listens. also, surprised there's no Billy Woods review yet, and no one in the comments is pushing it. it's a dope album.
I'm so glad you reviewed this album, and would have loved if you had reviewed Lore which was emotionally stronger IMO, and better than this one although still so good. The 2017 record is awesome, and so complex it' still different at every listen. But that's right, the mix is too thick, it should be lighter, there's too many guitars., these guys have definitely a mixing issue and should be signed by a major if it's still customary, to get a better sound.
You should really do vulfpeck. To be completely honest I've never found anyone who didn't like them. Any of their albums will do, there all equally as good.
this album kinda went by me when I listened to it. probably because I was expecting more of the old Elder, at least a-la "Lore". but after hearing your take on it I'll give it another try.:)
I know you'd probably never listen to it, but would you consider reviewing the new Volumes album Different Animals? I wasn't a fan of the band but their newest record was unique and enjoyable to listen to.
Yo this is a serious question and I'm not trying to get likes or anything but does anyone here know what juuling is? Or is it just something that happens in Arlington, VA
great review totally argee with the original ending song sonntag nothing special however... have you given a listen to a THOUSAND HANDS ? By far the best song/ ending to this album! Please give an updated review much appreciated!
This is fucking great, thanks Anthony. It is so hard to make a standout album in this style of music these days, but this really is amazing.
Best since Yob's Illusion of Motion
am I the only person in the comments that wants to discuss this record? fucking hell. Love this album and it might be my AOTY.
Thanks Anthony!
nataskaos yeah these comments suck. I usually don't mind the meme overload but I'm an elder fanboy so fml
Yellow Plaid. What more is there to say? Album is awesome.
Album and band are huge
Right? Best review I seen on RUclips. He understands it.
Cal looks and sounds like Anthony today
ryan toys review But it honestly does look and sound like Anthony doh
ryan toys review uhh, really?
ryan toys review but its not a joke.. cal really did look like Anathony ....unless... you ARE ANATHONY !!!
ryan toys review I'm just here to join in on that rtr hype!
So guys, uhh who the shit is ryan toys review?
A dude that replied something like "It is Antony Fantano, dipshit" and who apparently deleted his comment after getting blasted.
So many positive reviews in a row
June has been a great month for music
Ketamine Moose the new king gizz album will also be a positive review
Vince staples will end this streak, mark my words.
Fishm0nger Didn't like it? I thought it was kinda underwhelming.
I found this album generic. :/
I love Elder but I really can't understand why you didn't like the last album but liked this one
ocalaballa
The Roots and Elder?

Matt Allan * the best metal release of 2017
It is also my favorite album of 2017.
This album is amazing. Glad Anthony came to his senses after not enjoying lore (which is equally amazing)
Also fuck all these people complaining for a fleet foxes and Vince review. Your god emperor melon just gave this amazing album an 8/10. Do yourself a favor and listen to it
Charlie Pennington I also don't see this as too much of an evolution from Lore. more of a continuation/improvement of it.
Charlie Pennington I couldn't believe he said he didn't like lore. Clearly he didn't listen to the title track....
Elder actually made a better Mastodon album than Mastodon
I constantly thought this when I first heard it.
Elder were doing what Mastodon are trying to do now, way before, and way better
S p i n g o you or anyone couldn't say it better.
mastodon and elder never sounded alike
Dont say that again
Turn that 8 upside down now its an 8
Been listening to this one on repeat since it came out -- probably my personal favorite of the year so far.
Melon you co-authored the republican healthcare bill??? Wow!!! Didn't expect that from you honestly!
finally something funny
It was so easy, too. Believe me.
Malkav65 I'll certainly agree with that.
Most of this comment section is just about people asking to review other records.
People have become bigger fans of Anthony himself rather than his reviews or the music.
SSJ Chicano I wouldn't say that you're wrong either. In the grand scheme of things, I think in some ways, (unintentionally) we view Anthony as a RUclipsr and not as a well respected music reviewer and analysis. Something like a filthy Frank or someone else in that realm.
finally, a new metal review!
FINALLY. I thought you were way too harsh on Lore so I'm really glad to hear you come around on them, just like you came around on Pallbearer. Greathony Reviewtano
This is my introductory to this band. I had never heard of them and was blown away when i heard the first three tracks on this album.
This is the AOTY! It doesn't bring anything new, but it's really well written, and blends perfectly a lot of classic metal and rock references in a fresh and modern way.
Props to Elder!
"redundantly lull you into a boredom induced hypnosis with the same two or three riffs for like, 12 minutes"
Swans 10/10
Same. No idea why he likes them so much.
Because Michael Gira yelling obscenities and making gutteral noises over top the riffs makes it "art".
Bongripper* 8/10
i think he meant that more of as a joke, he likes dopesmoker so i'm pretty sure he's not dissing stoner doom
y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
This album is amazing, so glad you reviewed this one !
Wow a lot of yellow flannel lately, what a time to have a music opinion.
I also knew you wanted to replace Cal, you backstabbing Melon
Finally you review some Elder, goddamn!!!
Still don't believe you gave Lore a good listen because everything you say about it just doesn't make alot of sense. go back and do yourself a favor melonman
Jeroen Verbeeck Agreed, Lore is very similar to this one, though I think this is better. Truly great band right here.
One of the best imo! From their heavy doom debut to their latest proggy stoner release. I love it all. Amazing band!
@@jeroenverbeeck7925 ya no way he seriously listened to lore. it's generally considered as good if not better than roafw
i just listened to the first track and this honestly gives me fond memories of when I used to listen to only prog, it scratches that adventurous musical itch in my mind, but doesn't come off as overly produced or technical to turn me off, which is why i can't listen to a lot of modern prog today

Nice to see people parroting shitty memes rather than discussing the album being reviewed /s
jamebonez I hate it, this is a music first page but these kids just want to repeat memes. It's not funny.

Did not expect this review, but I'm glad you reviewed it. I think it's one of the top Metal albums of this year so far.
plz more stoner rock bands!
Solid review. Agree about Sonntag and a relatively weak finish given that Sanctuary is a highlight for many. Best / first use of lap-steel by a 'metal' band?
7thString This is the first in about 50 comments which ive scrolled through that actually discusses the album review, jeez...

Arth Maindarkar it will be rain come down and will be at least a five

Solid review of a solid album, but my guy... Please review MOTU by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard!! Didn't like it too much on the first listen, but with each listen it sounds better and better, and now that I've listened to it through a couple hundred times I'd say it's their finest album to date. Looking forward to seeing you tear it apart and ruin my day.
Elder are touring Europe this July and August! And North America in October! Go see them!!! They're awesome live
Great review Tony. Nice 1
Are there actually any comments about Elder here? Great band. Wish he reviewed more albums from them. I really liked the last one.
I honestly was gonna sleep on this album, but now I think I'll give it a few listens.
also, surprised there's no Billy Woods review yet, and no one in the comments is pushing it. it's a dope album.
Thanks for recommending this I really liked this
I didn't think you would get round to reviewing this great album.
It bothers me a lot that the album cover doesn't fit in with square Anthony has in the back
Fandango finally doing an Elder review. Can finally die in peace.
Was hoping you'd review this, I actually have the same opinions on Elder and on the record
Awesome! I forgot that this had come out and was looking forward to it, so I'll have to pick it up soon!
I take a bong rip before I watch every new upload, yielding mixed results.
This is probably my album of the year.
11LuStar juuling is happening at every state college in the country brotendo. Vaping but somehow it's not lame
Great record. I agree with the 8 out of 10. It would be great to see them tighten up some of the songs next time around. Could be epic!
Oh God, this album is soooo good.
will you review the gold and silver sessions?
great review totally argee with the original ending song sonntag nothing special however... have you given a listen to a THOUSAND HANDS ? By far the best song/ ending to this album! Please give an updated review much appreciated!
Sort of new to your channel, but have you ever reviewed Stoned Jesus or Wet Cactus?
Are you going to review the new Goatwhore or Dying Fetus albums?
Hey Anthony, can you review Natewantstobattle's Sandcastle Kingdoms?
Absolutely love this album, not sure whether I enjoyed it more than Lore but it is definitely worthy one.
Will you be doing a review of 'Here Lies Man' debut?
