Luke - i'm a grower and here in Costa Rica the red variety is native, I would like to provide some feedback/correction - the advantageous root or however you called it is a 'holding root' - Pitahaya (dragon Fruit) does not feed from those, in the wild they are not on the ground either they are extremely tenacious climbers so they use these aereal roots to cling to trees. You should always plant dragonfruit near a tree trunk or provide artificial sticks so that it can climb :) - Also the Red Variety is less common and also sweeter, and its much much prettier to consume as it will leave juice or dishes you make out of it with a deep pink/fucsia color that looks extremely yummy! - also its ridiculously healthy. One last piece of advice, dragonfruit normally is 3 layers but if you get a random segment born with 4 sides PLEASE DO NOT CUT IT - you just got yourself a MALE polinizer! so praise your plant, she loves you. These stems will polinize the non-self pollinizing varieties ensuring you will have viable fruit but also they produce 3-4x more fruits so be really happy!

Adventitious roots arise out-of-sequence from the more usual root formation of branches of a primary root, and instead originate from the stem, branches, leaves, or old woody roots. They commonly occur in monocots and pteridophytes, but also in many dicots, such as clover (Trifolium), ivy (Hedera), strawberry (Fragaria) and willow (Salix). Most aerial roots and stilt roots are adventitious. In some conifers adventitious roots can form the largest part of the root system.

A friend of mine gave me a small dragon fruit cactus and an aloe cactus that were both in the same pot. he only told me that i needed to water them when they get dry.. i had no idea that i should be using fertilizer and a steak to keep the dragon fruit growing upwards!
also, is there any reason why my dragon fruit cactus has been getting soft? when I received it, the skin felt like it was very healthy and cactus like. I've been keeping it watered and near a window during the day and then move it away from the window and onto a small heating pad at night because its getting too cold in my apartment. I've had it for about a month now and it hasn't begun sprouting roots or growing at all.. I'm worried that it won't grow because I'm not doing something right for it but i dont know what it needs me to do. Is there anything you could suggest to help my cactus regain its suppleness and start to grow?

There is a bit of misinformation in this video. These are not desert plants, and the side roots allow them to climb into the canopy of the jungle. You also do not want to put a cutting into soil until its callused over. Otherwise it will rot.

Make sure the plant is hardened before planting the cutting. I had contaminated soil on one and the aphids ate the roots then the cactus. You may try a cutting to save part of it. You may try an Organicide soil drench to see if that helps. Otherwise it is likely dying. Make sure the ph of the soil is neutral or better. I hope this helps even if it is probably too late.

There is a bit of misinformation in this video. These are not desert plants. They don't mind hot weather but grow best with some shade in hot areas, they burn in the sun. It's ovious you have never grown a Dragon Fruit as you would know you don't grow this tree on the ground and it requires serious staking as it can get very heavy. You should do your research before making a video.
