British Prime Minister John Major conceded defeat in the U-K election at 02:30 G-M-T on Friday 2 May.
Speaking after he was returned as the Member of Parliament for Huntingdon, in South East England, Major conceded defeat -- but spoke of the responsibilities now facing Tony Blair - Britain's next Prime Minister and the first Labour leader to hold the post for 18 years.
SOUNDBITE:
"It is perfectly clear now that the Labour party has had an extremely successful evening. I telephoned Mr Blair a little over an hour ago to congratulate him on his success and to wish him every good fortune in the great responsibilities that he will have in the years that lie ahead. This is a great country. He inherits a country in extremely good economic shape. I wish him every success in sustaining that in the interests of all the people of this country."

But he struck an optimistic note about the future.
SOUNDBITE:
"Tonight we have been comprehensively defeated. We will listen to the voice of the electorate. We will consider what has been said to us. I think we must reflect upon it. I know that we will, and I know when we have reflected we will begin to prepare once again for that day in the future, I hope not too far distant, when my party may once again return to government in the service of this country."

As the vote count continues early Friday, Labour had 342 seats in the 659-member House of Commons.
The Conservatives had won 57 and the Liberal Democrats 24.

Despite not a Conservative supporter I have respect for Major taking the worse Tory defeat ever with such modesty and acceptance.

I felt for him. After all the damage left behind by Thatcher, he didn't stand a chance.
Agreed. Even though I was pulling for Labour, I found myself applauding when Major’s victory in his own constituency was announced (0:05).
Well he, I think, was probably quite content with the loss. He later pointed out that the voter participation in his 1992 victory (and so his loss he viewed more as a loss to indifference than one of great passions) was a lot higher than in the 1997 election and he also viewed the change in government after 18 years as maybe not inevitable but certainly a difficult force to fight. And I mean he’s right, in 1992 he won the largest number of votes in any British general election before or since and it also would absolutely have been difficult to keep staying on for a further 5 years. That isn’t to say I like him or his policies but I do think he was probably right to not be too upset all things considered.
Sunak’s speech on his upcoming defeat, something tells me it won’t be with the grace and professionalism of Major’s

I didn't vote for him but I was moved and impressed by the way he took defeat like a man and wished Blair good luck. Contrst snivelling little Corbyn still bitter and denying blame to the end.

And here the Tories made their biggest mistake of thinking they should move to the centre ground of politics.
I mean, they lost to a centrist government in 1997, where else would they go?

@@Fireglo Brown was a prime minister so beleaguered, so unpopular and seemingly exhausted, luckless and unsuited to the job,.
Like Major, he attracted general ridicule, often described by political commentators as a human car crash, painful to watch. His association with Blair probably the most hated ex UK prime minister ever. He had not opposed the invasion of Iraq despite public opinion. He failed to deal with an unsustainable property and personal debt bubble.
He delivered what was a devastating blow to his reelection campaign by being caught on a live microphone calling an elderly woman he met on the campaign trail "bigoted, she was a life long Labour supporter.
His gaffes and failures are endless.e campaign trail "bigoted."
