    You know I LOVE this channel. I really appreciate your hard work and presentation style.
    The exterior of the Chateaux de Versailles is not a great success, due in part to its additive approach of construction, and tendency toward Baroque drama rather than the more elegant luxury of the French Grand Classique style.
    However, much of the interior spaces themselves make up for what was lacking architecturally on the exterior. The Gallerie des Glaces, the magnificent neo Palladian Chapelle, and the (now demolished) Escalier des Ambassadeurs were all testament to the refinement of the French classical style.
    My personally favorite rooms date from the epoch Louis XVI and include the Cabinet Dore, Cabinet de la Meridienne, andBibliotheque de Louis XVI.
    I confess that the Petit Trianon, designed and built by Ange-Jaques Gabriel, is the most exquisite piece of French neoclassical architecture. Gabriel mastered the style, here, like no other architect. His design for rebuilding Versailles, and his monumental Place Louis XV (later renamed the Place de la Concorde), were both earlier versions of the style that, while beautiful, lacked the brilliance of Trianon.
    Looking forward to future installments on Versailles, thank you again!

      During my visits, I was amazed how 'petit' the Petit Trianon actually is. Of all things Versailles, I must admit the Petit Trianon has stolen my heart... Thank you so much for your indepth comment. Maybe YOU should be making these videos instead of I haha !

    Louis XIV spent too much and too many lives were lost in making of Versailles. I wonder if such grandeur was necessary considering the plight of commoners. These gross extravaganza led to the french revolution in which Louis XIV's descendants were executed brutally. Versailles is undoubtedly the most beautiful royal residence in the world but imagine how the hungry masses who were dying for a loaf of bread would have felt watching the palace back in 1789. Thank you for showing the transformation.

      Absolutely not impertinent. My nationality is Belgian, and I live on the Flemish side, which means I speak Dutch. (As you probably know Belgium, due to its history is bilingual, partly French and partly Dutch). Although my native tongue is Dutch I do speak French and German as well.

    Was versailles really that smelly (stinky)? And did they bathe? I heard that King Louis XIV bathed only two times in his entire life?

    • @TheKingsofFrance
      @TheKingsofFrance  3 года назад +4

      It wasn't good... Water was deemed unhealthy at the time, this is why nobody liked to bathe (especially during the times of Louis XIV... perceptions changed somewhat during the years...)
      Washing as we know it was not a practice at Versailles. Instead, white cloth was deemed the epitome of cleanliness. So instead of bathing as we know it, the royals would rub themselves down with white linen cloth to the point where their skin would become red of rubbing. They'd also change their white undershirts several times a day due to exactly the same belief: the whiter it was, the cleaner it was.
      In order to fight the smells, the courtiers would drench themselves in perfume. This lead to massive headaches for Louis XIV at a later stage in his life, after which he forbade the use of perfume at court. Which didn't help the 'smell' situation for sure...
      Fun trivia fact: the above mentioned is why Paris is the capital of perfumes to this day...
      Thank you so much for commenting !

    The anecdote about the Petit Trianon is apocryphal. The The Petit Trianon was built by Louis XV for himself not for Madame de Pompadour.

    • @TheKingsofFrance
      @TheKingsofFrance  2 года назад

      Can you let me know where you read this ? All sources I know state he built it for her. Thanks for letting me know, I’m curious now.

    • @Consrignrant
      @Consrignrant 2 года назад

      @@TheKingsofFrance..... I'm sorry. I couldn't even begin to remember where I read it. But it was from more than one source. The Petit Trianon was suggested by Pompadour as a project to keep Louis busy and as a getaway from court. There are many anecdotes that are false but often repeated. For instance, it is often said that the "angry mob" slashed Marie Antoinette's sheets, when in fact, the Swiss guard did their job and stopped the mob at the Salle des Gardes.

    I wish somebody would talk about the lack of sewers at that palace, how extremely stinky it was due to that, how incredibly filthy those fancy aristocrats living there were and how horribly cold and hot it was there during winter and summer respectively

    • @TheKingsofFrance
      @TheKingsofFrance  3 года назад +3

      Hi Oscar, you will probably like next week's video then, as I do (very) briefly touch those subjects in my next video which focusses completely on life at Versailles. I haven't spoken exactly about royals peeing in corners (which did occasionally happen), but I have addressed the fact that rooms were difficult to heat as they were built enfilade, and the lack of eg heating in the royal bedchambers and in the Hall of Mirrors. Anyway... I hope you'll watch and I would really appreciate hearing what you think about it !

      @@TheKingsofFrance Thanks for your reply King of France. I wasn't expecting any reply. I wrote that post because almost everybody thinks living in Versailles at that time was only fancy gowns and flashy parties. But what it's almost never mentioned is that sanitation didn't exist there. The place was basically a golden sewage. The place was so smelly, so stinky, so petrifact that the stench could be smelled from miles away, Those aristocrats never bathed or showered, they only used perfumes to hide their stench. Servants threw the shit of the pot chambers through the windows and may times it fell on the courtiers around, one reason they used umbrellas. The floors of that golden palace where covered in excrement and urine. Due to how dirty it was the place was plagued with rats, which attracted dozens of cats and dogs, which made the place also full of flees. During summer many people fainted due to heat strokes because those fancy dresses and outfits were made of heavy fabrics, which wearing on the summer heat was unbearable, and during winter the place was so cold that when food was brought to the dinning rooms the food was already very cold and the water and wine froze in the cups. I wish when explaining Versailles and living there historians also talk about the huge lack of sanitation and filthiness of that place, and not only about its luxury
