The ancient style of Silat, usually have concept that can be used as grappling techniques.
For example sunda style like Gerak Gulung Budi Daya or Gulung Maung also great in ground fighting, or akeket macan ngawahan from east java, is has very close fighting strategy such as ground fighting.
or the famous cikalong style, have concepts that can be applied in ground fighting.

I started learning Silat and Escrima in 1993 and Tai Chi and Bagua in 2008. I am into the health aspect of martial arts. I like to be strong and capable with a powerful mind! I am from Hollywood originally and lived in a small farm town for 15 years. I used to be a glassblower and did precision work with my hands and trained all the time. Now I work in a think tank. Love, Mike.

Before World Word Two 1945, when the Holland Ducth collonized Indonesia, martial art were forbidden by the Holland Ducth, so Indonesian people blended the martial arts with dancing, in those days Pencak Silat looks like traditional dancing, so the Holland Ducth does not know that Indonesian are preparing for independent war

with this information you've given me, the story of penka silat sounds very similar to the story of capoeira, how the Indonesians mixed their fighting arts into cultural dance to disguise it from their oppressors, the slaves did the exact same thing to the Portuguese in brazil, and were successfully able to escape capture and resist occupation in the Amazon for a couple centuries. its funny how similar cultures are yet how they can be 1000s of miles away

Silat originates from Malay world. It is a self defense mechanism.
The Malay world comprises Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, southern part of Thai and part of Philipines.
There are many classical movies of trial and tribulatiin of old empires.
Tyr google " Hang Jebat". It was a movie based on political turbulance in 15th century of Sultanate of Melaka.
The silat fight between Hang jebat and his best friend Hang Tuah was beautifully portrayed

It's true. Your quote is from tambo alam minangkabau. But in that tale, it is said that before it was mixed with the cambodian, siamese, persian, and another one .. there was also a ancient martial arts from minangkabau called gayuang. All the bodyguards (that came from 4 different places outside minangkabau, such as siamese, cambodian, etc) learn gayuang from their master. Then they mixed it with their martial arts.

Silat is divided into sport, artistic and self defense. Most of the self defense drills can't be used in sport for the reason of potential fatal injury. However, some principles of Silat like striking and takedown do make it into the sport form of Silat; basically sport Silat is the watered down harmless Silat akin to other sports like Rugby/American Football where the players engage in a scrum to control the ball and so the competitors of sport Silat will try to score marks by striking and take down one another. If you want to get a taste of sport Silat ruclips.net/video/Vzjz88KrKrg/видео.html.

well if you are talking about the name pencak silat then you might be right that silat was born in the 1800s. but when you talk about the style and the root then you are wrong because even the kingdom majapahit (around 1300s) was already using the style. but yes youre right that silat was used for wars and self-defense and even killing.

if you compare silat than indian fighting system movements, it is very different. But if you compare indian fighting system (such as kalaripayatt) with shaolin kungfu, you'll see the similarities. Therefore, I disagree if silat was came from india. Even from tambo alam, the origin tale of minangkabau people, there were already a fighting system.
But if you say silat had gotten influenced by many outer martial arts, I agree. But still the influence wont get major changing for its characteristics.

Pencak is the performance aspects of the martial art, while silat is the essence of the fighting and self-defense.

To know who started Silat, see who still religiously practice gendang silat and serunai in any Silat occasions. Only the Malays are preserving that (Malaysia, Sumatera, Brunei, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines) and Cham-speaking people of Vietnam and Cambodia. The Javanese of Indonesia are just copying it and do not truly understand the cultural aspects of Silat. They did however put "penchak" in it to make it sounds like "javanese-own" in the late 19th century. BTW, "silat" is a Malay word, not Javanese. The ones who keep on barking about "Penchak Silat is Indonesian-only" martial art in every youtube videos are actually the Javanese people who hide their "world-revolves-around-Java-people" greed behind Indonesia's nationalism and patriotism. Funny thing is, Javanese Silat masters can't even afford to have "staredowns" against real silat gurus when they come to Malaysia to boast about their silat. Their fakery is "locked down" once they set foot on the motherland.

Silat is over a thousand years old. Karate I learned is only 700 years old. Recently I watch a video about the true origin of karate is from South East Asia specifically the Philippine because the basic drills or kata of karate apparently resembles filipino martial arts or Kali which in turn originates from Silat.
