- This is something I've never tried before - I captured the Pacman Nebula in true color instead of capturing it in narrowband, false color.
Here are my astrophotography setup details:
Target:
Pacman Nebula (NGC 281)
Imaging Telescope:
Celestron RASA 8-inch
Imaging Camera:
ZWO ASI533MC color
Mount:
Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro
Polar Alignment:
QHYCCD PoleMaster
Filters:
Optolong L-Pro
Guide Scope:
ZWO 60mm Guide Scope
Focuser:
Celestron Focus Motor
I liked the one on the right too. Sometimes stars tend to take away from the target. It’s always interesting trying to find that balance. I love the idea of you recapturing nebulas in broadband. Hope you decide to do it.
Thanks for stopping by Paul. Yeah - I decided on the one on the right as my final image.
It looks good but I want natural raw not as much editing possible so deleting stars that are actually there irl doesn't sit well with me
Love the one shot color image. Very nice. PS...basements can be creepy. The quiet, the cool, the eerie darkness...sweet. lol
Right, yet I still go down there in the middle of the night because that's where the ice cream is. 💀💀
I agree basements are terrifying! I love the rich starfield it really opens how space is just vast and full of places to explore. It's open to an adventurous heart.
Yeah, and a rich star field even helps with light pollution because it's sending so much signal.
Hi Chuck! That was by far the best ghost encounter story that I've heard! I myself have seen some weird things too in my life, some unexplainable things for sure. But the thought of walking through a massless object (i.e. the ghost) would freak my out! I can already feel that weird frightend feeling when you walk up the stairs lol.
Anyways, great photo with the OSC camara, I personally like the de-emphasized star version better!
Awesome, I wasn't sure how the story would come across in a RUclips video. Thanks!
Awesome pictures! Love the ghost story!!! 😁
Thanks Shawn!
@@ChucksAstrophotography You're very welcome!! Enjoy all your videos too buy the way😁
Definitely the left one. So much natural color and sizes that narrow band can never do, unless rgb star subs are added. Rich true color stars are just wonderful in my option anyway
Thanks - yeah, this might be the best job I've ever done on the stars.
Love the video Chuck, can’t wait to see more, keep up the great work 👍
Thanks, Trev!
Love ghost stories Chuck! Perfect time of year for them! Great image as well, really love the star colors.
Thanks Joe. I think I finally got the star color right - everyone is commenting on them.
Natural color my choice, by a long way! The ‘Ode to Joy’ is a wonderfully fitting accompaniment. Your choice of music impresses me mightily.
Thanks Melvyn!
@@ChucksAstrophotography Have you seen ETs? Good channel I just sub. 👍
I like the natural color with the reduced stars the most, even more than the hubble pallet variant. You did a great job on this one, Chuck! Clear skies!
Hey, thanks Kyle!
So much ❤️ from Scotland 🏴
✌️👽👻
Thank you!
In the end Chuck's astrophotography become Chuck's ghost adventures. Love your channel & keep it going.
Chuck the Ghost Slayer! lol
Awesome Chuck
The mind is powerful! I worked on a property with an old mansion. They moved everyone out years ago to raise money to do seismic and lead work. Many many times you can hear walking, even stopping and standing at doorways like someone watching me. It's a huge multi floor place. Nobody else is there.
Interesting...
Great video and image Chuck. Love the 👻story. Maybe it was one of your nine lives that you lost that day you fell down the steps ?
Thanks Astrobloke, maybe it is - I hope I still have 8 lives left!
There is no way to choose. All three images are beautiful
Thanks Phillip!
I wouldn't mind seeing both as a comparison, Also enjoyed hear about your experiences, like always awesome work
Thanks Jason!
Great image Chuck. The story gave me chills. I'm huge on that kinda stuff.
Thanks AstroCarone! 💀💀💀
I like the one on the right. Looks awesome.
Good choice! Thanks Adam!
I like your hobbie so much. Believe we are not alone in the Milky Way galaxy 🥳✌🏻
Yeah, I'm sure we are not alone - even in my basement 💀💀
I just got my first one shot color camera,a ZWO 533. I'm looking forward to using it one day soon. Halloween ghost story's!
Cool, congrats on the new cam!
Hi Chuck,
I favor the broadband image on the right, but I too like 'rich' star fields. Of course, the narrowband is awesome. As per your Ghost, we just finished watching the new CBS comedy "Ghost" (Thursdays after Young Sheldon) and it sounds like one of them ... spoooky.
(Patrick of Savannah)
Cool, thanks Patrick. The only thing with the slightly bigger stars on the left is that they have the advantage of hiding a not-so-great background, lol. But I still like the one on the right. I'll check out that new Ghost comedy 💀💀
Love the image Chuck! Your a brave man to be down there! lol
Thanks SharpStarAstro 💀💀
Been considering a MM camera and it is great to see your side by side. It confirms my liking of True Color over Narrow band. Great job and thanks for the post!
Cool, glad it was helpful!
This is actually my current target for the month. Unfortunately, I've only had a couple of hours of clear skies in the past 9 days, with plenty of clouds and rain forecast in the foreseeable future. I had considered doing an LRGB version just for something different, since pretty much every image I've done recently has been narrowband (only exception was the Cocoon where I did HaRGB). Looking at your result, I might indeed do a broadband version.
Your weather sounds like my weather recently. No sun in the last 7 days. Yeah, broadband does look nicer than I thought it would.
I only have an OSC so for me nearly all nebulae come out colored like yours did. Personally I like this broadband look as I believe it to be a bit more “realistic” 😀
As for the starry version versus the less starry version, I like them both equally. To me, stars add a lot of beauty and depth so you gotta keep a good number of them in the final image. It’s a tough balancing act but both images are great in their own way.
Thanks for your input, Martyn. I'm working on processing the Wizard in broadband at the moment, and the nebula is not nearly has bright as Pacman was. I'm disappointed with this one.
Love the OSC version. The stars look amazing!!
Cool, thanks David!
I was considering an APO but saving for a RASA instead. Both on the right best but all are beautiful. My cam is the 533mc pro too!
Cool, you will LOVE the RASA.
Good video, Happy Halloween 🎃🎃
Thanks! You too!
I think I like natural color, imagining what my eye would actually see if it could.
I still wonder how well we would see these colors if we were out in space. I hope it would be similar.
I like the full star pic
Cool, thanks for the feedback!
I like the broadband also. The different colors of the stars in the background are amazing. Tho pleasing to the eye narrow band seems artificial but I see the scientific value. Ghosts huh. Well tis the season. Happy Halloween!
The Ghost Story would have been even better had I waited for Halloween, lol.
Hi Chuck, love the photos and the comparison. I’m guessing the one shot color was the ASI533MC PRO camera, am I right? To my knowledge that’s the only square frame dedicated DSO camera on the market. Regarding your final comments, I am wondering if you live in an old house? Do you know any of the history of the house? Besides Astro photography I find mysterious unexplained anomalies to be the next most fascinating!
Thanks Paul! Right, it's the ASI533MC camera. The house might be around 65 years old. There was only one owner of it before us. Nobody has ever passed away in the house to my knowledge, but before those 65 years, I have no idea about the history of the land other than it was undeveloped.
I like your narrow band work better. Nice work Chuck.
Glad to hear it Joseph because I still use narrowband when the moon is out.
Great ghost story addition for Halloween :-) I think NB is crisper than OSC but both are great. Is that OSC without any filters at all? I'm imaging NGC 891 tonight without one (usually use at least a broadband cls-ccd) and interested to see how to turns out. Bortle 3/4 so actually should be ok! Clear skies!
Thanks. I used an Optolong L-Pro. With your Bortle 3/4, I certainly would not use a filter either.
If I wanted to get started taking pics of this quality, how much should I expect to spend? I'd be starting from scratch, needing everything from telescope to camera and software for the PC.
Nice picture of Pacman considering the total exposure time 👍
Right, not very many hours on this one.
Very nice as always
Once again nice work! I definitely prefer the one on the right. Also I think that ghost wanted to watch tv with you…
LOL, thanks for watching.
Awesome awesome awesome
Thank you!
Good video as always, Chuck! Did you try a version with RGB stars and the narrowband object? That star color you captured is beautiful and has such nice blues and yellows it might look really nice with the SHO. Scientific value be damned 😆
I haven't tried it. But I should - it would be easy to do. I agree, Scientific value be damned - LOL
you should take short exposure say like 4-5 second exposures to prove you can get good results without a special mount, but anyways good work i am thinking of buying the optolong l-pro filter would you recommend
Right, that would be interesting - but then I would have to manually keep adjusting the mount to stay on target.
Hi Chuck, did you look under the stairs (cfr. the movie “The people under the stairs”) ?
Not on that night, I stayed upstairs, LOL.
Great images and fun video. What are the specs on your processing PC. My current computer is like it’s owner, old and slow. Looking to make move to Pixinsight but need to upgrade the PC first.
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz 4.20 GHz, 16.0 GB RAM, Windows 10 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, 500 GB SSD boot drive
i saw the ghost of the chines restaurant calender hanging behind you.😁 good food always .
lol, when something gets hung on the wall it usually stays, even if it goes out of date.
@@ChucksAstrophotography well, some noodles or fried rice helps those long nights ,in the winter for sure.
You should make your basement Chucks Command and Control Center...
I like that idea - maybe even add a green screen down there.
Natural color is my choice.
But the Huble pallet has also his thing.
Best regards.
Thanks for the feedback, Ralph!
Do you take a lot of extra Oxygen to get that much sky blue? Did you capture any Sulfur? How do I know what filters I should use and what I can skip?I know galaxies are RGB+Ha but Nebulae are a different process.
Oxygen is strong with PacMan, I captured an equal amount of it as Ha and SII in that narrowband image - I did use SII. Usually, planetary nebulae and supernova remnants look fine with only Ha and OIII. But I would just look at what other people did and do the same thing.
@@ChucksAstrophotography Thanks Chuck!
Ok. No basement for me at your house.
LOL
Both great captures chuck! I like the true colour, just did it myself, got about 8 hrs with the 2600mc pro! Can’t believe you got 3 thumbs down, they obviously don’t like a good ghost story 😀 Clear Skies
8 hours, nice! I wish I had gone longer, but when the bad weather moved in I just went with it. I hope my ghost story scared them away forever. 💀💀💀
Always awesome content
Thanks man
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
When I was kid, my bedroom was in the basement. One night during a thunderstorm, a lightning bolt illuminated my room for a split second and I saw what looked like a man standing at the foot of my bed looking at me Scared me to death at the time, but as an adult I'm convinced it was a case of pareidolia.
Right, but it's still fun to believe in creepy things, lol.
Left. I absolutely love all the stars. Between the OSC and Hubble palette I go Hubble. I like the stars of the OSC. They’re all great. Guess what! Orion has shipped my Atlas 2. I’m beyond excited. Here’s an observation: you have Mario on your pc. Irony is that it was Mario and the NES that killed Pac Man. Lol. Maybe the ghost is the angry spirit of Pac Man. I’m reaching.
Awesome, congrats on the Atlas 2! Right - I remember when Donkey Kong and the little plumber (before they called him Mario) were the next big thing after Pacman. Maybe the ghosts are Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde 💀💀
Wonder if your neighbors appreciate the barking
Nobody does.
Because All I have currently is a OSC, I would vote the broadband image. but I do love SHO, so Narrowband too.. I guess I'm 50/50. For the Ghost.. Put some flour or baby powder down on the steps, then come back in a day or 2 and see if you have any footprints that are not yours, if you wanna be sure!!!! Clear skies
Interesting idea, thanks!
The put a pacman on the submarine telescope as the slug has the double humps
New subscriber here... I prefer the image prior to removing some of the stars (one on the left at 1:56). As for the colours.... I'm on the fence as both look great!
Thanks, yeah - I had to think hard about that one. The bigger star sizes do have the advantage of hiding defects in the background as well.
With the stars. When you know they are there and then the image as rich in stars. You KNOW it was edited. I use OSC, saving for a Mono and F2 Filters for the RASA>
BTW Creepy
Cool, which mono camera do you want?
@@ChucksAstrophotography I have not looked in to it. I am setting up a 10SCT for planets and smaller deep sky. It needs a planetary camera and backspacing and a 2.5X. I got it on a CGX so I can track. I will ask you and Trevor when I go for it. The RASA does just fine with a OSC for now.
The RASA is mounted with the Baader filter tray. I just need to get a camera and filters. F2 filters are pricey.
@@ChucksAstrophotography Got one on the shelf?
Well I will vote Narrowband of course lol.
Of course, lol.
❤️
Thanks!
Hey Chuck!
Hey Kush!
Probably walk through a nebula👌🇺🇸
Ghost story. You walked through an image and didn’t feel it. You said you saw the image, you did not feel anything. What exactly did you see? The image of a ghost? If so, what does this ghost look like?
GHOST CONFIRMED!!!!!!
Sweet! lol
I do not like false color. Let it be what it is.
Yes, but narrowband is very useful for light pollution protection.
Shadow person, set up a few cameras next time. Can you send me the alien crafts you captured please.
Maybe I am a purest, but I like the real color better.
Yeah - in this case, the nebula was strong and bright in real color.
you scare me😬
💀☠👻
WHY
Hey Chuck! My friend, i recall vividly a good while back when you went through a rough patch with your motivation/interest in doing Astrophotography pics!? Then, if i recall correctly, you gradually started to find your passion again but you diversified into other video types, like solar, planetary, live streams, etc. Maybe now your motivations/passion for bread and butter Nebulae astrophotography have started to resurface again ? Whatever the case, and whatever you decide to do, myself and everyone else will be very gratefully following your journey as always my friend! Go get 'em Chuck!! Wes, Liverpool UK.
Thanks Wes. yes - I burned out last year trying to make a RUclips video for every thing I captured. Now I've settled into much easier videos to make - I'm always sitting, LOL. I'm getting too old.
hi, im thinking about buying a used telescope, its small and it costs 7600 pesos (around 380 dollars)
what do you think it is capable of?
Even small telescopes can see amazing things.
I learn so much form your channel. I'm fascinated with astronomy, and channels like yours, bring it all to life for me. The way you explain everything, makes it easy to understand, even for dummies like me 😎
Wow, thank you, but I'm sure you are NO dummy!
Hi there, I just discovered you channel and it's awesome. I was wondering if you have ever captured any anomalies, objects you could not explain?
Many thanks
Yes I have, check this one out: ruclips.net/video/KCZcdkmoVUE/видео.html
@@ChucksAstrophotography Thanks for the link Chuck, amazing capture!
Ever capture any UFO's?
I love the natural color as well Chuck. However, I have been using the IDAS NBZ dual band with the OSC mainly as it only seems to be clear when the moon is out. I like the one on the right as well since the stars are still there. I don't like them when they are deemphasized too much. - Cheers Kurt
Hi Kurt. I still haven't tried my Dual Band filter. I usually swap in my mono camera when the moon comes out. I'm worried the dual band won't give me as good of results as my separate Ha, OIII, and SII filters.
@@ChucksAstrophotography You might be right. I don't have the options you have yet. I did buy the 2" F2 Baader Ha filter which I can use with 1600 and hyperstar but I need the OIII and SII. I did get a 2" LRGP Optolong so I can do HaRGB using it as well. That still only leaves my OSC camera (ASI294MC) for another setup which is why I am using the NBZ. Most of my OSC images are with the NBZ filter when the moon was out so it does a decent job as long as it is not right next to it. - Cheers
Didn't you fell once on these stairs too Chuck? Hmm! It may be terrestrial nebula. I do need to learn from you directly how you get the star colors. Very pleasing
Yes I did, lol. The Stars surprise me. I didn't do anything special other than run Photometric Color Calibration and then increase the saturation on them. The color is already there.
Nice one there.. here on the other side of the earth i’m not having any chance no clear skies for half a year nearly.. cheers ! 👏
Wow, sorry to hear that
Nice to see the OSC version I've never done narrow and think they both have there qualities. Love a good ghost story Chuck, maybe you can catch it in Narrowband with the G (ghost) filter 🤔
Yeah!!! Ghost Hunting! I should start a new channel 💀💀💀
Hi Chuck, your videos are very inspiring and fun to watch. You got me wanting to try this hobby and I have a DSLR + Redcat on a starguider pro. Very basic but enough to get me going. One question (and if you prefer this is not the place for tech questions, no issues) for multi night shooting, do I have to keep all the originals or can I stack each night and keep just the stacked images and then merge those? Your fan from across the border (Burlington, Ontario).
This is amazing and you feed my soul.
Wow, thank you
I like OSC with all the stars, but each to their own :)
Yeah - in this case the stars really tip the balance to favor OSC.
That's a cool one-color shot, Chuck! I especially like the one on the right with the reduced stars. I'm sorry about haunting your basement Chuck, I'll stop...or maybe it's the spirit of Cane the dog :-)? Clear skies.
Yeah - I'm going with the reduced stars as my final image. Cain is still alive, it must be something else haunting the basement 💀💀
@@ChucksAstrophotography I'm sure it's a friendly spirit like you Chuck, clear skies!
Great video Chuck. Nice color on Pacman.
Perhaps you walked through the Ghost of Cassiopeia. 👻
Yeah, or maybe they were the Pacman ghosts - Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde
Do you have any thoughts on combining unmodified DSLR images with narrowband images?? I have a Canon R5 that seems to have very low noise and high pixel count images...but being unmodified it lacks serious red color from the HA region. I'm planning to buy a full frame astro camera like the ZWO ASI6200MM Pro (mono) and hope I can use the two together for making large photo prints. 45 and 61 MPs should be great for printing purposes but not sure what to expect when trying to combine the two. (This is my first year into astro but have superb 600mm F4 bird glass from my real job as nature photographer I'm trying to use)
A lot of people combine the two and it's a good idea. I'm sure there are some good tutorials out there on how to do that,
Hi Chuck. Nice images. OSC image looks great. I have successfully used the L-Enhance Optolong filter with my camera.
Cool, I still haven't taken my L-Enhance out of the box yet.
Who you gonna call…👻, great video and image as always Chuck!
Thanks Callum!
How about combining both rgb and narrowband, just to see. Btw- Me and my girlfriend, at the same time, seen a ghost orb floating in our bedroom and it left directly thru the wall....it lookd like a big, green, glow in the dark hand ball....weird.
Cool, that sounds like the Ghost Busters movie. Yeah - I should start combining RGB stars with my narrowband.
Prefer the natural colour myself, but city folks don’t get a lot of choice at times with the light pollution.
As for stars, depends on the image, I like to use a narrowband luminance and then add the colour, that way stars are tighter, also more detail in the nebulosity.
Also narrowband seems to be evolving into a more tuti-fruti thing with all sorts of colours mapped to intensity etc, which seems to no longer represent molecular emissions. No doubt they print well and can be pretty, each to their own I guess.
Every image has been photoshopped to a high level.
Great hobby regardless.
Right, people are taking the Hubble Palette to places it was not meant to go - the debate between science and art is not even debatable anymore. The more colors they add, the more money they make on prints.
Hey Chuck, wow all three images look great. Interesting story about the ghost next time you see that or feel something like that just say The Blood of Christ has Power!, not trying to be religious here, just say it. Keep up the great work my friend. God bless.
Thx for the tip, if I remember it I'll say it 🙂
True color is majestic ✨👍 Oh man your ghost story creeped me out 👻
Awesome, I wasn't sure how the ghost story would across in a RUclips video, glad to give people a chill, lol.
Chuck, great job. I'm bias towards a one shot color or rgb filters. I know color as we understand it on earth is not as applicable to dso light, but imo its more "authentic" to how it might visibly appear at the source. Can't draw myself to produce sho false color yet.
Yeah - I wonder how these objects would look if we were out in space seeing them with our own eyes. But the Hubble Palette is soooo much fun to tinker with.
Great image Chuck, I guess I also like the one on the right a little more, the nebula just pops a bit more
Interesting ghost story Chuck, almost halloween, so maybe you'll see that visitor again ....
Thanks, I hope I don't see it again, lol.
Pretty sure it was the ghost of Edwin Hubble, wondering why you’re straying from his namesake’s pallet. 😂 Gorgeous image, btw!
LOL, thanks Jeff!
As usual very interesting video, now as many of your followers I am waiting for a tutorial about OSC processing.
Thanks. I have given a broad overview in my recent videos of M45 and M31.
I like the natural color, specially the stars, but also the narrow band has more detail in the nebula.
Yeah - and the narrowband is a must for when the moon is out.
Very nice OSC image. I prefer rich star fields. Shows how many more stars are out there than can be seen by the naked eye.
Yeah, I do like that rich star field too, it's a tough call to deemphasize them.
I usually think, well, I don't know what it was, but either I'm not supposed to be here or it ain't.
lol, right
Did you use the optoLong pro to image? If so isn't this narrow band imaging with an osc? Nice pic!
I use the L-Pro, which for broadband. No narrowband data on this one. Thanks.
Both are images I hope to be able to produce someday. Very well done
Thanks Larry!
I'm first! Amazing image! Have been getting cloudy nights for ages here. Hope it's clear there, so we can see more amazing astrophotos from you! And I like the "ghost" story xD
Thanks, it's been cloudy for at least 7 straight days here.
@@ChucksAstrophotography oh, that sucks! Clouds and light pollution are the worst enemies of us astrophotographers. Isn't it?
