Eventually digi is just gonna do a flat out hentai analysis.
YES!
make this comment top
anime hardcore purple hair elf
I want to explain to all of you why this orgasm is so special
I'd pay good money to see that.
I think Digi taught me something today. I'm going to design characters now.
i thought you were gonna mention guilty gear like everyone else xD
9:10 Remember these words. They will serve you well.
"Nothing is cooler looking than Guilty Gear. It's a natural law of the universal." Digibro 2016
Well, the man speaks the truth. Also, you stole my comment. Sort of.
Jordan Smith hahaha what was it?
Maurice Fleshman Nothing in the world is cooler than Guilty Gear? Damn right, id buy you a drink if I could.
Jordan Smith lol.
I still hate how Guilty Gear Xrd ~Sign~ is too strong for my old laptop.
Well at least I have BlazBlue.
"looks kinda like guilty gear, and nothing's more cooler than guilty gear."
Digi no quote you have said in the past is as true as this.
"THIS MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE" - Digibro, talking about the Asterisk War
Envy me, I have a personal signature by Tosihiro Kawamoto
Fire Starter He was a pretty nice guy, conversation:
K: hum, So you are a fun of Cowboy Bepop
Me: yeah.
K: When did you watched it? it was meant for a more adult public.
Me: I also like your Gundam
(Translator misunderstanding)
K: I worked on a few them, haha
Me: yeah, yeah, that was wath a tried to say.
K: Which one is your favorite?
Me: Gundam 0083:War in the pocket.
K: ( laughed)
End
The gay before me had a cosplay of Boku no Hero academia, And Kawamoto told him, "Ah ah, 20 days before I was drawing that anime"
It was at the Japan Weekend, Madrid, Spain.
We had the director of FMAB and the drawer from Welcome to NGK' s manga.
Fuck you Alex.
fuckin alex
Goddammit alex
Tsukasa Shindou You are making me feel bad...
Now cover Kekkai Sensen
1:44
Yep Very realistic design
Her eyes are almost on her temples
People can actually look like that
Hey Digi! If you were interested, I'd love to see a video on Yoshiyuki Sadamoto! He's my personal favorite character designer, and I'm sure you'd have great things to say about him.
It really annoys me that Cowboy Bebop isn't my kind of show. I want to love it so much, but something is stopping me about it and I can't figure out what it is.
Shaddy I totally agree with you. It's really good but I just don't love it for some reason lol
Shaddy why do you want it to be your kind of show ?
It's really one of the best works of art ever created, but I can see how some people wouldn't like it. I respect that.
Geistz Because EVERYBODY loves it and I don't have a concrete reason for not being into it.
Shaddy Do you have to ? It is just not your type of show, don't get frustrated over that.
One of the things I like about Yasuhiro Nightow (creator of Trigun and Kekkai Sensen) is his designs of background/minor characters. They all really stand out. Especially how he draws a lot of the bounty hunters in Trigun. Most of those guys look like they could be the main character of their own series. Some of them look even more interesting than the main cast. For example in Badlands Rumble you get see all these different bounty hunter designs that make really want to know more about the world Vash The Stampede lives in.
I'd say Golden Boy have been my faves of all of Kawamoto's designs of the shows he's worked on. Bebops are classic, but Golden Boys bring out just the right amount of sexiness.
Ashutan Yeah, When I first saw the show, I was thinking it looked like it could be the same character designer as Cowboy Bebop, and alas it was true.
Golden boy is king of ecchi even after all these yeard
They're not real, bruv.
Aw, man. I already knew I was going to love this video, and then you had to bring up the old Gundam OVAS. Not only that, but earlier I found myself mesmerized by Faye's design earlier while watching Bebop today and now said show is brought up for me again.
One of my biggest problems with adaptations (manga to anime) is that many of the manga artists NEVER worked on an animation nor do they design their characters for the purpose of movement.
The only thing WORSE than that is when the character only looks good when it faces the audience/reader but looks like shit when in profile or facing away from you.
This is basicly why some characters work better as a statuette than an action figure.
It´s supposed to be a comic book, not a storyboard for an animated movie or series men. The character designers only have the write to accomodate the manga´s designs to the animated medium, not making them "faithful to the source material". It´s the same situation with Berserk and its adaptations, where people forget the meaning of the word ADAPTATION. And the same problem when it comes to adaptations in the part of the writing, where people hate fillers just because and not appreciate them before judging
What’s so crazy is that when I found Noragami and Kekkai Sensen (on separate occasions, mind you) I found the character designs so aesthetically pleasing that I decided to watch the shows.
"Outfits no one would wear in real life"? Dafaq man? Spike, jet, and pretty much the rest of the characters in the show aside Edward and Faye have pretty casual and regular clothing...
You must have watched a different show.
Kanbei Spike wears a suit, Jet wears a jumpsuit, what the hell's so unusual about that..?
"Jet isnt conventionalt handsome"
bullshit jet is rugged as fuck!
my favourite Character Design is where it looks extremely realistic yet with still (some) anime features to it, no Moe bullshite!
Same, actually, except that I really like the moe design, like the ones from Kanon (2006) and Clannad.
So 80s anime?
Jepze are you kidding me?
the only anime in the 80s that looks close to my favourite Character Design is Saint Seiya, and not even that anime is that good at it!
it's more of 90s to most of the 2000s look for stuff like Evangelion, Yu Yu Hakusho, Tenchi Muyo, heck even Sailor Moon could pull it off! Code Geass, almost everything from Akiyuki Shinbo, of course he's still using that art style lots nowadays! Berserk, Majutsushi Orphen these type of character designs
Oh for me 80s had best style and probably best girls or women too
+Jake Lewis Why do people hate the Moe artstyle? Like, it's just exactly what anime is known for: Big eyes, colorful hair.
You should talk about why Guilty Gear looks so good. I would definitely listen to that.
'but even never-minding that...',
So Digibro, if nothing is cooler than Guilty Gear, how bout you talk about it for 10 to 15 minutes essentially gushing over it? Id watch it.
Honestly, I would too. Even if he posted it as an uncut 30+ minute vlog on After Dark...
Jordan Smith Yes. Give the grand daddy of anime fighting games some love man!!
what i like about a lot of hi designs is that they're grounded. they're different and unique enough to clearly show the importance of the character and give you their personality, but at the same time, they're real enough that they could blend in to the normal world fairly well. if you dressed like spike, or the guy from noragami( haven't watched it) or leonardo, no one on the street would really stop you. you'd stand out in the crowd a bit, but it wouldn't be like if you dressed as a yugioh character where people stop and ask if it's halloween time.
D-d-d-d, d-d-d-duel!
"And nothing is cooler-looking than Guilty Gear. It's a natural law of the universe."
AMEN, SO MUCH AMEN TO THAT
Digi you are basically the most learned and official anime historian of our time. This is why I sub. Thanks. Next episode of this can you cover Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (FLCL, Evangelion)? Him and Kawamoto master this aesthetic imo.
Gabriel E. If you like Digibro check out the "Anime World Order" Podcast
Your voice is one of the nicest thing I've ever heard.
Normally i would listen to RUclips in the background of a video game but for some reason your voice makes me actually Watch the video
This video informed me that studio bones is probably my favorite anime studio. I never realized so many of my favorite shows came from there until I saw so many of them listed, so thanks! Good to know!
Oddly enough when rewatching Wolfs Rain recently, it reminded me of Dark Souls, one of Digis favourite games. Another cycle comes to an end and the main characters are trying to create a new age/paradise, with different interpretation of what that actually means. They meet people similar like them, that have abandoned the quest and gone hollow. The dying world is roamed by monsters and remnants of old and the major threats are divine beings, that have fallen somehow. Half the fun is piecing together the lore and history, via vague exposition and background details, plus there is really atmospheric music.
To those that haven’t seen Blood Blockade Battlefront, Give it a Watch! Definitely worth your time investment.
jesus her eyes at 1:31
Best character design
alcohol fetal syndrome taken to a whole new meaning.
"1:31, huh, it can't be that bad"
*clicks to that time*
"OH GOD WTF"
to be fair, it suits her character wonderfully
It gets better (read: worse) at 1:45
This is the kind of analysis that's made me fall in love with anime all over again after more than a decade without touching nearly any of the stuff.
I enjoy the way you describe and analyze anime as an art, good job Digi!
Thank you @Digibro , Toshihiro Kawamoto is coming to my local anime convention and you now explained the reason why I should respect this guy and go see him.
I have so many of your videos saved up on my favourites list. You're a big help Digi, I watch your videos 2 or 3 times every few times, it's a great study! I'm learning a lot! Keep it up!
I think that its kind of a logical fallacie to say that the "coolness" of a character is improved by its ability to sell figurens. While i realize that those figures are how the studio makes money that doesnt make it cooler than another just more marketable.
Great editing by the way the K-on outlines filling themselves was amazing
I'm pretty sure the figurens point was only in reference to the characters with faces that are designed differently and are interesting for that, but are quite ugly when it comes down to it so you wouldn't want a statue of it. meaning it's a good and thoughtful design, but it's not very attractive, as most anime designs tend to be.
this productivity! its unreal.
I've heard so many good things about Cowboy Bebop, I really should get around to watching it! Came here for Kekkai Sesen; bit disappointed you didn't touch more on that. Oh well.
I would say that along with Cowboy Bebop, Berserk pulls this off pretty well, too. At least in the Golden Age arc.
I watched Golden Boy not knowing its characters were designed by the same guy who did Bebop designs. Neat.
you should do one of this on Haruhiko Mikimoto (Gunbuster,War in the Pocket, Macross) or Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (EVA, Diebuster, Hasoda movies).
And maybe Kazuto Nakazawa (Digimon Adventure 02 movies, Samurai Champloo, Zankyou no Terror and so on).
You make me realise time and time again that I may know a lot about Manga, but am such a bloody noob when it comes to the Anime Industry. I had 0 Idea that all those shows had the same character designer.
Thx to you I'm really getting into Anime more and more
It's thanks to Digi too that I've looked more and more into anime in general: Directing, how the animation tells the story.
Since you love manga, you may like Berserk.
To this day Kawamoto is by far my favorite character designer.
Kawamoto's is a bloody genius when it comes to character design.
i did not knew he did the art for the anime mention in the video.though am the kind of anime watch that watch to enjoy.i dont pay to much attion of who in it who produce it.as long it looks interesting and i get catch up in maybe the 5 mins of the first eps than am happy.but i do like bones, bones is nice.
I never made that connection between Bebop and Wolf's Rain. But now that I look at it it's really obvious.
you've been killing it lately Digi, keep it up!
It's been too long since I've drawn any character I have I wonder if I got back with all this knowledge I've been gaining about character design my art will improve
you know ive only recently realized how much just changing the colour of outlines changes the tones
Wolf's rain was a damn good show tbh
Geistz I'm agree with you
Keiko Nobumoto is one of the most under appreciated writer out there.
indeed Geistz
It always seem to that people either love wolf's rain or hate it.
I loved the show, but I dind't like the ending. Not because is a bad one, but because I had high expectations since I didn't finish until many years later after watching it the first time. The reason is, without saying any big spoiler I can, the thing that nobody of the show won after all.
Whoa, Ghost Slayers Ayashi namedrop. Too cool.
Just saw this one day before the announcement of B3's second season. Good news: he's coming back as char designer. Bad news: He'll be under the direction of the same hack who barely put something together for Dagashi Kashi and TWGOK.
I’ve only been a self-described otaku for around two years so I haven’t seen a whole lot of anime compared to others, but so far Noragami is my favorite anime. I love how sleek, smooth, and beautiful the animation is, but the story and characters are also really amazing to me. It has the perfect combination of action, romance, and comedy, along with darker themes, that just hits my sweet spot. It’s the perfect balance of all the things I love about anime, and I really hope we can get a third season.
I love this series. Please keep going with this!
It's really interesting to hear a non animator's perspective on all this technical animation stuff
your reviews are so good, that as a professional artist myself, I am learning things, its scary
I think it's also worth to mention that along with a primary color scheme, the Cowboy Bebop character designs seem to also have a secondary color scheme with a lot of greens, purples and yellows oranges appearing throughout the characters' outfits. Just another great thing to notice I guess!
Wow, you seem to have mastered your genre.
"nothing looks cooler than guilty gear"
amen to that
Subbed because you said nothing is cooler than guilty gear, it's a natural law of the universe. Also I guess because I enjoy listening to your rants and find your opinion mostly agreeable or when there is a differing opinion on something, it's still interesting to listen to.
I was fangirling so hard when I met Kawamoto this September
I honestly had no idea Vicious was THAT short. My child mind did not recognize the that his badassness was little screen showing.
LET ME FUCKING SLEEP! I HAVE EXAMS AND A FUTURE! GOD DAMN IT!
Embrace the passive aggressive
Was not aware that Kawamoto was the guy behind two of the UC Gundam OVAs that either I ended up liking or recall having an impact back in the day. That's pretty cool, honestly. Kind of curious about his other adaptations besides Bebop and FMA.
I love all three of those shows... so much
LOVE Cowboy Bebop! A super cool locking anime is Red Line! :D
It's less that a triadic color scheme is the secret to good character design and more that red, yellow, and blue work well for small groups of characters and the animators did a good job on making the color scheme work. Other color schemes can work. It's just a little more difficult to pull off since animation is heavily based in saturated colors.
Nevertheless, I still love this series and am glad to see Digi giving recognition to good character designs.
Good LORD Bebop was incredible. I really need to buy those BluRays one of these days.
"Nothing is cooler than Guilty Gear, it's a law of the universe" Yup, i can approve of that.
One of the main reasons why I want to watch Golden Boy hehehe
The subject in the beginning btw is termed unity vs harmony in art-- whether something should look like it all comes from the same hand, or allow for more distinction among itself. As with many things in communication art, where designs sit on that scale depends on what the goal and target of the animation is.
I was thinking about this the other day, i was watching the Opening for Gundam 0083, its got to be one of my favorie Gundam stories but Gundam in general has always been a favorite, I really do miss the older looking art style and the attention to detail, even just a quick shot of the pilot in the cockpit and there is just so much stuff in teh cockpit, levers and buttons, the attention to detail always astounded me, but then looking at all the scenes and looking at all the shadows, even the smalls shadows in the background.
DevilJin Which opening was it? The Winner or Men of Destiny?
WalkingGirlKoi i watched both but the Winner had some of the better animation in it
man Cowboy Bebop man I missed that show so much back in my high school life
I remember back in high school I remember that good old times with that space Cowboys while watching cowboy Bebop man I think it would be cool if they make a sequel to Cowboy Bebop with more actions and what have happened to spike after the end of the final episode of this seires
It's not anime, but I love the designs in Asano Inio's latest work. Asano isn't shy about giving his girls "ugly" features, which in the end can make them even cuter on the whole by virtue of having their own unique charm.
jet is baller as all hell.
Aw I had a feeling Gosick was going to have screentime this video and unfortunately (though deservedly) I figured it wouldn't be less than praise.
Just like after I watched your video on Gurren Lagann, this video makes me want to go watch every anime you mentioned in the video. Goddamn.
Is this becoming a regular segments? That's pretty cool, I loved the Gurren Lagan video
I agree with this video's thumbnail. Overwatch *does* have cool character design!
he showed a picture of la corda d'oro, my life is validated.
I came here for the love of design, starting with your other video about the animation of Kill La Kill, I feel very discouraged that those are the only two in a long list of other topics you do.
I am not upset but you are the person that I would have to tell me this stuff, because the anime style is just as great if not better than other animation design styles.
To be fair it is a newer video series than some of his other topics. Also how long it took for drunk anime history to come back show he never fully abandons a topic.
Okayu P his first time doing it was in May 2015, but I did just find him so stuff like that is hard to find
Yeah that's understandable. There's a playlist section on the channel you could try.
Okayu P I think Cool Character Designs wasn't one of them
You want to see really cool character design? The Fall, a 2006 movie by Tarsem Singh, the visuals and character costumes are amazing and blow almost everything else out of the water, especially considering that it's a movie with real people and real clothes, they look way better than most anime characters
Looks silly.
Are you serious? Or are you joking?
davoo most likely keeps clips of shirobako in a folder for all the times digi talks about what goes into a design
I thought I'd be in one of the two camps mentioned but somehow I'm in between? I love shows like Gurren Lagann and Hero Academia, where the character designs are very much tailored to the character, but the aesthetic of the show is wild and crazy. The same-y anime style works for some, but is abused heavily in lesser shows, and sometimes realistic designs just don't work with animation. If you want something that realistic, is there a point to making it an animation as opposed to live action? I want shit that moves like no human does.
well between you and Geoff trumpeting bebop I suppose it is time for a rewatch
2 positive videos in a row? The fuck?
I'm counting 10...
ikr you're drunk
what do you think about d-gary man. Not the new season the old ones.
Maybe if you watched a decent amount of his videos...
that part where you threw in the canipas video was you trying to send us to other places for information
but i would wait until the end of the video to shout out references if only because the way it happened this vid were jarring and broke the flow a bit
but keep experimenting with it
Actually this was written way before my call for people to do that. It's pretty normal for me to do that, really.
***** it is pretty cool that you shouted canipa out when something relevant came up
i think the word jarring is a little bit harsh for what i meant
you seemed to slow down your speech right as that shirobako clip played so that the shoutout wouldn't fly by too quickly
then when you say "you could even be forgiven for thiking they weren't from the same author" your speech cadence picked back up
so it seemed like putting that extra context/shoutout slowed down the video marginally
honestly it still worked it just sounded a little weird the first time through but listening through the video a second time while writing this comment that it does work
also if you are going to send people to canipa's vid why not use the cards in the top right corner of the video?
I've never actually tried using the cards--maybe I will!
I didn't think it was jarring, although that might be because I had already seen that video and had no reason to watch it again.
You just made me realize that I've a favorite character designer
You just reminded me to watch darker than black
Well now I know why I like the character designs in gundam 08th ms team so much now
I watch live action shows where an actor I know portrays a new character. Nothing wrong with taking an existing character design in a new direction.
You should do an episode on Jojo because I swear I love most of the character designs
another great video from the only non-cringey Anime youtuber out there, keep up the good work, can't wait for the next one
Hey Digibro, have you ever seen Sergeant Frog? Back when I used to watch anime shows a lot, I started with Sergeant Frog, but no one ever talks about it!
Heck yeah! Guilty Gear designs are GOLD!
I was curious to know if you watch and appreciate western animation and what are some of the works, old or currently airing that you find good.
I got here early so I could have commented before watching the video, but I like to watch a video before trying to sound funny.
I really want to see more Cool Character Designs Videos.
I agree wit how the bebop cast wore weird ass clothes but like he said It clicks and until he pointed it out I never thought of how weird their clothes were.
Hellsing's artwork and characters also stand out.
To be honest, i think that exagerated proportions aren't anything bad. I just think that, especially with an animated visual medium, you can get away with more than just a few subtle differences. Sure, if you get to the details then all moe characters are different, but from an outsider looking in there's very little visually striking or different between some. Usually the best way to tell two moe girls apart who have extremely similair features is by looking at the art style they're drawn in.
Kekkai Sensen is so great yet underrated.
Did you change the thumbnail? I swear it was a picture of Faye a couple minutes ago...
Kind of hope we'll get a video on the show from 1:17 to 1:28 but given the nature of the show and the amount of other shows that you want to make (or more requested by fans), I doubt we will see one any time soon
