This was that sweet spot Arnold created where everything was a bit over the top and silly and borderline parodying itself but still extremely badass because it was Arnold doing it, and he actually looked like he could run through a brick wall. Golden age of action.
You're right, if you stuck Charlie Sheen as Topper Harley into this you wouldn't have to change anything else about the scene but the genre would be completely different.

I love thought provoking artistic cinema as much as the next guy, but sometimes I just need dumb and silly (but above all well constructed and executed) action to get my kicks. This film is exactly that. Perfection!

I mean, one guy gets scalped by a saw blade and another takes an ax to the groin. All this when they are just following orders and making a few bucks. Best movie ever.

Commando and Rambo are basically the inspiration for the game *Contra* on the NES. The two main characters (player 1 and player 2) are John Rambo and John Matrix. Of course, the NES couldn't call them that, but the likeness is definitely there.
I'll never forget watching this movie as a kid - not only did I end up believing that magazines held waaaaay more rounds of ammo than they actually do, but I also learned the difference between what a bullet from a rifle will do to a person vs a shotgun blast. So glad my parents let me watch any action movie I wanted while I was growing up. 😁
That first minute. Best sounding machine gun ever haha. That's the number one thing I always remember about this movie. It sounds like a damn helicopter.

Exactly my sentiments. As long as I’m enjoying it, I don’t care how unrealistic it is, I’ll happily watch it, if that’s the tone it’s going for at least. If it tries to be all self-serious with stuff like this, then I’ll laugh at it rather than with it. But I’m in on the joke when I watch this one, the filmmakers had a blast making it, I have a blast watching it. Silly, streamlined, badass… fun. What more could you ask for?

I like the fact that none of them are even aiming - add the fact all the gunshot sound effects are the same that were also used in Big Trouble and Little China, including the bullet 'pinging' sounds 😂😂

The saw blade deaths were on a whole other level! BADASS and Clever Stuff. Matrix was highly resourceful turning to the garden equipment.
