Sounds incredible! My nephew managed a trash company a few years back. Someone had thrown a ‘64 Princeton Reverb in the garbage. When the truck came in my nephew snagged it and brought it home. He put a 3 prong cord on it and I bought a Jensen speaker for it. Plugged it in and sounded awesome. He gave it to me as a gift. How cool is that?
Sounds like a stand up guy. That's even more amazing, yet sad knowing that some really great gear doesn't get saved...
On a scale of 1-10 this is 16.7 cool!
What a great story! Keeper for sure 👍🏻
@@baronrogers806 It is amazing that there are still people out there who don’t know the value of what they have. My cousin got a 1941 Martin D-18 for $1200 a few years back.
@@MatthewScottmusic I’ll have to be either dead or flat broke to part with it.
Man that les paul through the princeton sounds incredible
Sure did!
Im a tele guy through and through, but there is no better sound than a les Paul cranked up through a Princeton
I'm so glad you decided to restore this Princeton and bring it back to life. Sounds incredible! The Fender Reverb amp was one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Cheers Matthew
That 64 Fender Princeton Reverb sounds incredible. The tone that you get from your guitars and amps is amazing!!!
Thank you always, Joe!
That reverb creates a wonderful nostalgic, melancholy sound, like remembering a favourite place from your childhood you haven’t seen for years.
I collected amplifiers from the 70s up to a few years ago. I had over 100 old Fender and other famous amps. I only held on to 3. The 64 Princeton Reverb, the 58 Tweed Champ and Deluxe Fenders. In my opinion, they are the most beautiful and versatile sounding amps ever made. There use in famous recordings is prolific. This video really accurately reflects the rich tone of the PR. There wasn’t a studio in Nashville or LA they did not have one.Thank you
Another great video showing off some gorgeous pieces of gear. Thank you for sharing these pieces of history with us, and the fact that you’re a massively talented player makes it all the more enjoyable. Still eagerly awaiting the debut record! ;)
Sounds so sweet. That reverb is to die for. I love the cranked tones too and there aren't many fenders I can say that for.
I’m lucky enough to have grown up playing my Dads 67 Princeton Reverb. I still have it to this day and the tones in this video are the sounds of my soul. There’s something very deep and emotional about this amp. It’s very humbling and soul stirring. No other amp like it in my opinion.
I'm the same way but with my dad's factory black, all original '65 fender Jaguar. My brother has had it for many years now. I grabbed an American professional jaguar and a 12" Princeton reissue to carry on the torch in my neck of the woods so to speak. That's cool about growing up with your Princeton. Similar over here with the jag and ccr too though.
Absolutely. A literal rock and roll ghost
Sounds magical with both strat and les paul. Simply stunning sound.
Thanks for sharing your inspirations with us. Love the way you play, always sounds good! Thanks to Joel for keeping history alive and sounding as good as ever!
Yes, the sound of the amp combined with those guitars IS fantastic but let's also appreciate the amazing playing from Matthew - those fingers are where the true magic is happening. Such incredible feel and soulful playing for one so young - awesome talent. Thank you for helping keep great guitar playing alive in 2022! 👍👏

@@MatthewScottmusic what is your opinion of the vibroverb 63 reissue? I love mine and it’s a sweet sounding amp
Hard to beat a pair of 6V6's driven hard. Really enjoy seeing your videos drop on YT, great playing with soul beyond your years!
This is one of the best Princeton reverb videos I have seen! Great job with the tones and the playing.
mesmerizing playing as always, Matthew. Love your video style, your commitment to vintage, and all the rest of it. cheers
You've got the best strat sound on the whole internet, of course, in my opinion. Cheers
Agreed
It sounds amazing

There are a lot of people who agree with this. Matt definitely has his own sound and it is amazing.
This '64 Princeton Reverb really does sound the biz! Well worth restoring, evidently in the sounds. Especially cool with the various drop tunings you like to use, Matthew. It really exploits the sonic 'meat' in the timbres of this classic amp. Lovely playing as ever. We still hope for peace.. ✌️🎶🌟👍
He didn't restore it, he totally fucking changed it!
Love your Priceton Reverb Vintage Amp you restored, sounds better than any Princeton I've ever heard. Am 68, raised in musical family, been addicted & playing since I was 6. I attribute my good health & happiness to my addiction for playing. I'm an introvert and my love for learning & playing truly a passion. I see & hear these symptoms in your videos. I've played in 4 countries in my life, but enjoy playing at home more than anywhere. The learning obsession is under control for best of the best that inspires me. Not into drugs & actually not prescribed any medications. Been personable to let you know your high on my list of the greatest guitarist I've encountered. Much respect& admiration & respect for your distinguishing love for your art. Live long, prosper & hope you continue your postings. Your fan here in southeast Texas. Samuel P. Wedgeworth
Great sounds from both guitars and amp settings. Love your style, helluva guitarist! Keep the great videos and music!
I love your videos. I play everyday and I love looking at all the vintage guitars and amps . I will never be able to afford one of them but I love to watch them. Keep the content coming 🎸 🔥

That strat bridge tone with the tremolo is one of the best tones I've ever heard, good god
Such sweet tone Matthew! Sounds awesome. Love your tone and playing in these videos.
Sweet addition to the tone making machine that you've become! Congrats on the acquisition, enjoy that one for the rest of your life for sure it sounds great.
Great videos man, and great playing. You NEED to be in a band with that tone you’ve got.
Nice to see a young guy playing those old gems with such virtuosity. Bravo
Very nice demo, enjoyed the tone differences using both styles of guitars, and for showing the settings you chose to use
Absolutely amazing sounding AMP Matt, and your guitar playing is incredible too mat well done ☺
that is remarkable. you'd think old equipment would sound rubbish, but instead it's beautiful - and that from a compressed youtube soundfile. quite remarkable
Loved getting an insight into how you record your sounds, your tone is always killer and this time is no exception
I plan to do a more in depth video on how I record guitars, once I figure out what I'm doing 🙃👍🏻
I can't express how pleasing it is to an old school metal guy to see a young guy playing old school Blues Rock with authority and confidence. Great job!
Inspiring man! Keep doin your thing keepin that tone and sound goin what our generation of music needs
Amazing amp. I scored a pre-CBS late 1964 deluxe reverb and I totally love it. I just love the good ol' blackface sound
I use my *_DigTech Element XP_* to get a ‘65 Fender Blackface Twin Reverb sound.
Awesome! They made thousands of them but someday they will all be snapped up and not as easy to obtain
Man I loved the sound of that Les Paul. With the Princeton it is just killer.
I gotta say its refreshing watching this video with alot of rhythm playing. Alot of vids today are just licks. You scored with that amp Matt.
Great hearing this amp. Looking forward to upcoming videos.

I blueprinted someone’s 1964 PR then built 2 clones, the first for my oldest friend and the second for me. I ended up with a Mid control plus a Dwell. Still haven’t slowed down the tremolo but need that too. Oh - adjustable bias is essential as well. I ended up replacing the bias board on the 1964 when the cap crapped out.
Wow...just the most beautiful fender tone.
Non musician here. Just love guitars. The sound & tones, plus your amazing guitar playing was amazing. Thank you so much.👌🙌
Matthew that tone on that Les Paul is killer. Man I've heard so many great recordings over the years with that tone it just sounds good and I'll let the strap do it too but that Les Paul man that's sweet thanks for everything you do bro
Very wise to save the original reverb tank.
The metals used in modern versions are not the same.
Great find Matthew, sounds fantastic.
So very true!
@@MatthewScottmusic You obviously understand the original/old iron (transformers) are always preferable, same for reverb tanks. New amplifiers are great, but like guitars there is a charm and feel vintage gear possess that can be difficult to explain to those not familiar.
Love Your Content Matthew.
Man, tuned down that half step on the Gibson, the tone on The Weight sounded incredible! Great amp, great guitars, even better playing. Nice work, Matthew.
no diss to Matt, but even my crappy playing would sound good on that kit. gorgeous sound

Neat story. Ozzy said when he was auditioning guitar players in L. A. for his 1st band all these guys were bringing in stack amps. Then Randy Rhodes showed up with this little Princeton amp and they laughed. Until they heard him play.
That is so cool!! 😎
Another fun fact about that audition, Ozzy had heard so many people audition that day that he was ready to wrap it up. He heard Randy tuning up and getting ready to play his audition piece, when Ozzy came over told him “you’re hired.”
Randy actually got a bit upset because he had prepared this impressive piece, only to get hired during his warm up.
I think he forced them to listen to him play it anyway, not that he’d have to do much arm twisting there, lol.
@@barbsfpv3066 I think Ozzie just instantly noticed Randy's great-all-the-time attitude; the skills were a huge bonus, but his attitude is probably what let those skills flow. My wife tells me he showed up at her childhood home for a party, and had no problem with my brother-in-law chucking him in the pool. She said he was really cool to her too, even though she was 9 years old.
Some of your concerts in Italy would be nice!! 🎸👍🎸 Fantastic sound!!
sick tones from the 60s-70s I love and dig with you and that amp! Thank you for sharing brother!
Another gem of a video! Thanks for uploading.
Those amps were Duane Allman's go to choice in his sideman days at Muscle Shoals. If you listen to any of the stuff he did in those days, you're hearing that same amp. Check out "Hey Jude" with Wilson Pickett. The outro at the end is brother Duane wailin` away on a black face Princeton Reverb.
That's the song that had Eric Clapton asking- who is that?
@@timhoovermusicman Right you are! And that was what got him invited to Derek and the Dominoes.

Sounds fabulous by itself! Of course in a mix you would cut more low end but to hear the entire spectrum of the guitar thru the amp is delightful! Thanks for effort with this!
Superb chops as usual dude. Loving your posts.
The speaker was definitely going to be replaced because of the common problem with the disintegration of the surround material used to attach cone to the frame. I noticed it happening to so many speakers made before the 90s, it probably still happens to speakers unless they are using a different material. But I stopped repairing and building speakers in the last ten years ago, and the speakers I made for myself ten years ago still have a good surround material so far. That's probably the most common problem I've seen over the years. Cleaning the circuit board(s), potentiometers, and switches and physically looking at the board(s) and making sure that the solder joints, you could find a cold solder joint or one that the component lead through the board wasn't allowed for the solder to flow correctly and the lead isn't actually soldered to the pad, but it still worked or could be intermittent. The smd (surface mount device) chips can act weird or not at all just by dust or something that is between their leads and changes the state because it's conducting where it shouldn't be. A toothbrush is good for cleaning between the leads, and isopropyl alcohol is a definite cleaner, it evaporates and doesn't leave a residue.
I haven't been able to find the 90 percent isopropyl alcohol, but the 70 percent is good enough, and a good sprayer of contact and surrounding things that can be damaged by the type you are using, a contact cleaner that I thought was the best was Blue Shower, but DO NOT USE BLUE SHOWER G3 BECAUSE IT DAMAGES PLASTIC, and never use WD4O because it is actually conductive and leaves a residue and makes it build up dust, dirt and other stuff you don't want.
Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated! 👍🏻
I used to repair televisions... In the heavy tube days... A toothbrush is a great tool! Find dry joints without getting shocks!
Two comments:
Firstly, you have to have experience and passion to chase down these amazing gear finds.
And the percentage of people who can coax these tear-inducing sounds out of it is below 1.
Secondly, this young man needs to be in a band that can properly back him.
Jesus Matthew that was just out of this world. Your playing transported me. Thank you for being such a fantastic CONDUIT. It's120am Friday here in Manhattan and i don't want to go to sleep. I just want to pick up my 2022 FF flamed maple 338 and just play and play and play unplugged.😊❤🎼🎵🎶🎶🎶🎸🔊
Man that amp is butter! Awesome tone and I love the way it just seems to fill the room
I have a 67 Princeton reverb they sound fantastic love the tone of both guitars sounds epic! I play gibson but man that 59 strat sounds good.
Fender sure got it right! I own 4 vintage Gibson amps but 3 had to have circuits modified to bring out the best tones. 🎵🎶 I’m pretty sure all my amps and the mods still cost less than that beauty. That is a gem.💎
That knocked me off my feet. That's an amazing sound and great playing!!
Awesome guitars and amps incredible playing!! your playing at the end of the vidio always leaves wanting more.
Capacitor in the reverb tank? Huh. Never heard of a capacitor in a reverb tank...
Great playing and those are some sweet amps!
I believe I meant coil. There are coils that needed rewinding.
@@MatthewScottmusic I wasn't trying to be snarky. Transducers often go bad in old reverb tanks, but I doubt it's very cost effective to rewind them. Anyway, really dig your channel.
“Add a touch of reverb”

Ah, I see you’re a man of culture as well.
No, the Reverb knob is wonky.
Yes, that was merely a touch to me😁👍🏻

Ok Matthew!!!!! My favourite video BY FAR for 2022!!
THANKS!!! from the most crazy with princetons guy from Greece!!!
You have a great feeling for the guitar, it makes my heart catch. You have a future in your hands! Love it!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. That Les Paul Special is his best sounding guitar. I literally think he was destined to have it, it sounds so good. Even though he’s such a Fender guy.
I liked it too. No tune-o-matic Bridge, just the wraparound one. I just could not afford a vintage guitar.
My 79 is my main amp. It’s bar none the greatest amp I’ve ever owned. I use it for everything. Mainly with my tele.
Amazing Video Mathew! I agree that the Princeton reverbs are inspiring to play. My grandpa is letting me borrow his reissue one and I love it. He also owns one from 1976. I believe it has a replaced speaker but man that thing sounds amazing. I love that you say it's a great recording amp too! the few times I've gone to the studio it's always been my Strat with the studio's Princeton.
Those last 2,5 minutes of playing is some of the best I ever heard - both melodically and soundwise.
Princeton and Super Reverb are my two favorite amps! There is a great amp tech in Memphis TN that knows his stuff. Lyle from Psionic audio is amazing for anyone in the TN area. Check his RUclips channel out. Great video keep them coming!
I grew up northeast of Memphis in Martin, Tn. Man, the memories of driving down to the original Strings and Things on Saturdays in the late 70's-early 80's are truly cherished ones. Some great times for checking out great gear. Always had old Fender amps around cheap.
Finest amp I ever owned was a '64 Princeton Reverb and selling it was the biggest mistake I've ever made when it comes to buying/selling guitars. The Reverb was hands down the best I've ever heard in a Fender combo. It couldn't be any wetter if I played it underwater. Nothing has even come close in the days since. Some time I just hate myself.
Buy another one...been there done what you've done. Don't beat yourself up to much, there is more than 1 Princeton out there mate🎵🎵.
@@MrCarcass1978 I own a '72 and I've played close to a hundred other PRs, including three legitimate '64s and not one of them has been able to match the first one. Esp when it comes to the reverb. I don't know what the story was with THAT Princeton, but I haven't played any amp that had the voice of the one. If I knew I could get that tone just by adjusting the circuit or the reverb tank I would have done it years ago.
As a tech who works on these old amps, I often tell people that buying an old Fender is a better buy than a newer one, and more than worth the cost to bring back to life. I currently have an old Bassman head sitting on my bench, and this video reminded me to dig up a small terminal strip that we don't have at the shop to finish the repair!
Man, that sounds amazing. That Les Paul sounds out of this world.
Very nice Matthew. That Strat was singing. The LP P-90’s I always like them. Was thinking I need a Fender reverb amp. Considering a twin, but I’ll check out the Princeton. It could be a good choice. Thanks
The Sweetwater reissue is a killer version that comes with a 12” speaker.
I have a twin, and I absolutely love it for clean tones. And by clean tones I don’t mean edge of break up, I mean almost solid state levels of clean. To get the amp to break up even a little with medium output humbuckers, I need to crank the volume to about 5, which is deafening. Also, the amp is very picky about overdrives and distortions going into it, and many drives sound awful through it. Also it is absurdly heavy, and an absolute pain to move around. Still wouldn’t trade it for anything else, definitely my favorite amp I’ve ever played through.
2 incredible sounding guitars, 1 incredible sounding amp and 1 incredible player. THE END.
Oh man, that is just a smoking, awesome, and most beautiful sounding app my friend.. What incredible luck in finding that 1. I would die to hear that live in a good music store sound room. WOW.
I own a Princeton 68 Limited Edition Reissue. Its awesome! I wish I could like your video again! So inspiring!
Man I do love the amplifier videos. My guitar and I are best friends but the amp is what we pick up chicks in.

Absolutely amazing sound, keep up the good work.
There aren't any capacitors in a Reverb tank. Did you mean you had the transducer replaced?? Because the only electronic parts in a tank are the transducers, the rest of it is all Springs and wires.
That's what I meant. I misspoke. It's a coil of some kind that had to be rewound.
@@MatthewScottmusic yeah I figured. A transducer is a very small coil, basically a speaker without a cone. Instead of vibrating a cone, like a speaker, a transducer vibrates the spring of the Reverb tank.
Nothing better than a Princeton! I had blackface '66 but sold it regrettably. Since then I just recently bought a Laney L5T112 5 watt 1x12 as I don't have a genuine British Class A amp in the arsenal with a real Celestion to boot. This thing is a HUGE 5 watts that reminds me of the Princeton's lush, warm and creamy tone, along with as much volume or even more. Keep her and never let 'er go! And, one of my fave showcases of a Princeton live in action was Kenny Vaughan with Marty Stuart slaying it with a Tele on Letterman ruclips.net/video/Cx_l9kLxycw/видео.html
The Fender vamp before the Gibson was something I could have listened to all day. You'll have to forgive me for stealing all of those vibes - but I must!! Great work as always, Matthew!! Thanks again for the share! 🙏🎶✌😉
