  • VA dental care benefits can be difficult to qualify for. VA only offers dental care benefits to certain qualifying veterans, based on a “Class” system.
If you qualify for VA dental care benefits, you may be able to get some or all of your dental care through Veterans Health Administration.
I will cover the different classes of VA dental care for disabled veterans as well as the VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP) for those that do not qualify for free veterans dental care.

Honestly the more I learn about the cascading effects of poor dental health on the body I think we should be getting every citizen some degree of free dental care. It could prevent a ton of stress on the entire healthcare system in the US and dodge a massive headache for doctors and insurers all the way down to regular-ass tax payers.

100% and VA Dental is a hard nut to crack. I do need an implant but get the big run around. VA Dentist actually told me “we do not have tools to put an implant in the back of the mouth” Few months later I asked again and this time “ you have bone loss and we can’t do anything about that” now a new dentist and it’s I do not know how to approve that so I’ll send you to oral surgeon and writes that “I’m demanding an implant”? I have a crown pop off 1 1/2 weeks ago and called them to get we have no appointments but you can drive 30 mins and walk in and wait so the dentist can look and maybe get community care. And they ask and wonder why we hate to deal with the VA😂😂😂

I'm 100 % P&T and get community care dental thru a civilian dentist. The road to get there was difficult because Loma Linda VA Hospital insisted that dental wasn't eligible for community care (BS) so I had to educate them. I'd have no problem with seeing a VA Dentist but it's way too far and my first appointment was 10 months out. I just recently had to get a new community care dentist because my former one no longer sees VA patients. The pool of civilian community providers is shrinking.

Seems some VAs like to make up their own rules but they need to follow the Department of VA regulations. Do you have a MYHEALTHEVET account? There's a link that can help you locate community care providers by specialty, including general dentistry. Also, every VA Hospital should have a Community Care Coordinator that you can speak to. Many times the people at the VA don't know the rules or make their own up. Good luck to you.

Staff shortages. Dentist being remanded by supervisor, while I was in the dental chair being treated. Dental technicians saying they are looking for other employment. I now live in Central America. I recently had a full mouth restoration with implants done in Central America, by a modern, professionally staffed dental clinic, with a military discount. The cost was about 60% less than I would have paid anywhere in the U.S. for the same treatment. I didn't mind paying. I used my VA disability payment funds. Received 1st class dental care, received 1st class implants, temp and perm teeth.

I am 100% p + t, I live in Oxnard, but the closest dental office is at sepulveda va. I went there for emergency surgery for a root canal, and it has taken them 3 visits already, and they have only finished the process and put in a temporary filling. The dentist argues that he doesn’t want to put a crown in, because my teeth are generally in bad shape. I explained that I haven’t seen a dentist for 12 years, since I got out of the service, and just recently received my 100% rating. The same dentist keeps cancelling my appointments a day or two before. He’s canceled 4 times already. It’s been 6 months and the route canal still isn’t finished yet. I have 3 others that are in severe pain that need to be done. How do I fix this? Do I sue the VA? Does an ombudsman work, or do I need to hire a lawyer for malpractice?
