    As I remember, the reverse seat aims for passenger safety, they performed a crash test, and the result showed the passenger sitting on reverse seat distribute the force of impact more equally, especially for the neck, but the reverse seat can't be found outside the test due to the passenger wouldn't be like it, and maybe cause vehicle sick

      I was curious about that and Googled it. What came up for me is that while reverse seats are indeed safer, it came down to some people getting motion sickness in addition to forward-facing seats giving them the impression of being treated better.

      I once saw a photo of cutaway Vickers V.1000/VC.7 scale model with passenger seats face backward, sadly can't recover it by Google picture search.

      Simply put, people prefer to sit forwards, even if that means less safety in a crash.

      Agreed with the safety explanation (although people do prefer to sit looking forward). This has even been proposed for somewhat more prosaic modes of transport such as school buses also for safety reasons. Thanks!

      Essentially there are 2 components in a crash. Facing backwards puts the shock on the whole back vs straps so less psi. Also head flung rearward (whiplash) is far worse than it being flung forward at the end of a crash.

    Rearward facing seats are generally thought to be safer in an accident. I flew to Bahrein in an RAF Vickers VC10 in the sixties, which had rearward facing seats. Incidentally I also attended the lecture by the Barnes Wallis himself (think it was 1963), where he revealed Swallow project to the public.

    The “reverse” seat layout was something Vickers did continue with later on with the VC10, it was considered to be a safety feature for ground incidents.

      I flew aboard a VC-10 with rearwards facing seating. It was a little strange but not at all uncomfortable.

    Hawker Siddeley offered backwards seats in economy on its highly-advanced, but too small, Trident airliner which entered service in the mid 1960s. It was thought to be safer in the event of an accident as the passenger would be decelerated into the seat rather than thrown out of it. You can also see backwards seats in the SOV from ‘Captain Scarlet’.

      In the states, southwest airlines offered rear facing seats so that the passengers could speak to each other. That stopped by 1990 as it was similar to people turning around in the elevator/lift and speaking to the group. Awkward. :)

    As a boy I had a weird little toy airplane in my pencil bag. Everything was molded into one single shape so the underlying VG concept was not very clear. I only found out about the significance of that shape years later when it turned out to be a rough representation of The Swallow. Barnes Wallis was so far ahead his time. A possible reason for the back to front seats could be the idea to use engine exhaust thrust reversal to slow the aircraft down during landing. Roll out length for every supersonic airplane is excessive compared to earlier generations. The concept still make sense today anyway. The fixed center section indeed would have solved the pitch up problems Vickers was concerned about, as aircraft like the F111, Mig 23, Tomcat and Tornado have since then proven. Furthermore the rotating engines are at a perfect position to avoid wing tip stall. Later airplanes have dogtooth leading edges and LERX for the very same reason. Barnes Wallis was actually against military planes. He has felt very responsible about the Dambuster strikes being so dangerous. It has been written that the passenger version of the Swallow was his real goal and he only proposed the military version to get enough money for further development of the concept.

    I read Barnes Wallace biography - one thing that struck me was that early in WW2 his wife sister & hubby were killed in the Blitz - Barnes & his wife on getting the news immediately set off in their vintage car and picked up their two surviving boys and adopted them fully in to their own family - Barns said there was no discussion they just did it - I'm sure this scenario played out in many households in them dark days - it was however a sign of the qualities of this brilliant inventor and partner.

    The simple fact of the engine as a control surface was great, it was also a major problem. The gathering the engines into the tail and the installation of thrust vectoring would have simplified the aircraft, lowered wing weights and also improved survivability. As a aircraft with reduced radar cross section and high speed it's use as a recon aircraft would have been excellent. It would not have been as fast as the SR-71 but still acceptable until better engines and titanium pushed it into that speed range. It would also be interesting to see what a smaller scale interceptor with considerable weapon bay capacity yet excellent range and manuvering due to vectored thrust etc. All in all yet another example of what I consider to be a deliberate policy of wasting the British capacity in favour of the Americans.

      Well for decades after WWII Britain was still paying off loans to the US meaning Britain was in the US government's pocket. The Americans used this fact to heavily influence British foreign policy and anything they thought might threaten US interests and companies.
      Consequently many British innovations were either stolen by the US with the British government turning a blind eye, or shut down at the Americans behest due to the threat of the US calling in the loans or declining future loans to Britain.

    Wallis was a genius - Geodesic construction on the R100 airship, the Wellesley and Wellington bombers, Bouncing Bomb and the Supersonic Bunker Busting super heavyweight Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs. But Swallow was allowing his imagination to outstrip practicality. Vickers contemporaries regarded his department as wasting talent and money on this and similar projects because the Swallow's issues of control and construction could not be addressed until decades later when we had developed unstable fly by wire, digital engine control and composite manufacturing and construction.
    Wallis's colleague and eventual boss, Sir George Edwards, knew a thing or two about practicalities as he created the Valiant V-Bomber fleet into service on time and budget, ran the VC10, TSR2 and Concorde projects. When asked did he think the Concorde was a rather conservative approach to a supersonic passenger plane compared to the Boeing 2707 SST he said "It was to carry 200 passengers, more than any other airliner. It was to do it at Mach 3 for five hours, of which our actual experience was a few minutes. It was to be fully variable geometry wing, only a handful of experimental and military prototypes had used the system. It would weigh a Million Pounds. It just wasn't going to happen." You don't think the image in his head was just the B 2707 surely?

    I don't know which amazes me more about your channel. On one hand, you've got breathtaking beautifully rendered video of aircraft. Most people have never heard of and all the videos are incredibly well researched.     Barnes-Wallis was always ahead of his time , a great hero of mine ! I have only seen his flying model , the SST and Bomber looks amazing ! Don't know about travelling backwards though , I cant even go backwards in a Taxi without being sick !.

    The RAF had the VC10 which also had rear facing seats. It was a safety thing. The only reason planes don’t use this idea is because people like to face the way they are travelling.
    It’s as simple as that.

    The seats were 'backwards' for safety reasons as studies had shown them to be more crashworthy. Several aircraft both concept and built have had backwards seats and from experience (20 years flying passenger in military cargo aircraft) they are much more comfortable if you're faced with rough landings or hard deceleration.

    The rear-ward facing seats were a safety feature of the amazingly advanced Vickers VC-10 It also had a completely automated landing system plus much more. worth an episode on it's own.

    Not an airliner, but the rail transit system of Greater Vancouver in Canada, SkyTrain, has a number of rear-facing seat train-cars, as well as forward facing ones. Most people seem to not have a preference for one or the other.

    I definitely think this plane could be made today with how much things have advanced. Barnes Wallis was thinking 2020s thoughts in a 1950s world, at least when it came to the technology he had access to.

    Backwards seats are safer for impacts. Passengers said they didn't want to travel backwards when surveyed.

    Duncan Sandys MP believed in all missiles rather than manned aircraft which scrapped aircraft like TSR2, and future British aircraft and was the nail in the coffin of future British Projects
    Also Barnes Wallis wanted to spend time flying models rather than risking test pilotslives as he was shaken by losses in aircraft like the Wellington ( which he designed) and also the losses in 617 squadron on the Dams raid. The money he received forhis work on the Dams Raid, Tallboy & Grandslam bombs he donated to a trust for educating children of RAF aircrew who were lost in WW2

      Duncan Sandys was correct - the missile was king. Ballistic missiles meant that interceptors were redundant and AA missiles meant that long range bombers were extremely vulnerable. Even the mighty A-12 (far faster and higher flying than TSR-2) almost came a cropper in Vietnam with an SA-2 exploding close enough to put debris through a wing fillet into the fuel tank support. The SA-2 was not even state of the art, being designed for slower and lower flying aircraft. If the more advanced SA-5 has been deployed, US aircraft would have been in trouble.

    From my research, the rear-facing seats were to prevent injuries in the event of an accident. The theory was that due to the greater speed, having your back to the direction of "impact" would cushion the passengers better than a forward-facing seat relying of flimsy seat belts., ahich might cut peoplew in half due to the G-forces.

    I know that! My father was in the armed forces in the 1960's and explained that to me. It was common for armed forces air transports to have backwards-facing seats, because a study had shown that more passengers survive a crash in that configuration. Though the same would be true in the crash of a civilian flight, facing the seats backwards had passengers boarding the plane and encountering the, "suggestion" that a crash was imminent. So the choice makes passengers feel more safe, when in fact more of them are likely to get injured.

      It was also more comfortable than facing forward during heavy landings which were much more frequent in the days before the advent of computer assisted flight controls.

    I rode the Vickers VC-10 in RAF service in 1986. All the passenger seats were “backwards” (facing aft) for passenger safety. This was in case of rapid deceleration, you sat upright and the deceleration would push you forward into your seat rather than off your seat. That was what I was told, anyway.

    Great video man. Never heard of this plane before. Thanks for the info. You may notice that in commercial airline crashes the crew have a lot higher survival rates than the regular passengers this is because they are seated in the rear and face backwards. ✈️👍💪

    The seats facing backwards is the correct way to put seats in an airplane. It is a best optimized configuration for rapid deceleration and it increases the chances of survival in a crash-landing.
    In those plane you don't need to put your head on your lap during a crash-landing in order for you to survive.

    The reverse seats are actually much safer and much easier on the human spine, in the event of a crash or accident. I've seen them used on the C-2A Greyhound carrier delivery aircraft when loaded up with passenger seats. Much better for the people flying in the back, when being arrested on the carrier deck.

    Flew in a few RAF Vickers VC-10's back in my army days, their seats always faced to the rear in them too, probably because the RAF planes were modular and could be turned from passenger carriers into airborne hospitals or tankers etc, Civvie ones always faced the right way though.

    The more of these I watch the quicker I can intuit why these things failed. Most of the time it's too much movement and complexity in critical components like engines and main wings.

      It's mainly a factor of the state of the art advancing at such a rapid pace. It's hard for the engineering and the experience to keep up.
      We still have a tendency to do this, we know something out to be possible but we just can't quite get there

      All the german ww2 performance fighters were built around the engine, a inverted v12, look at a fw 190 dora from the rear, its wider on the bottom, and comes to a point at the top like a pyramid. The entire plane is built around the engine being inverted. And yeah back in those days 70s and such, switch/swing wing craft drawings and types were all over the place, the mechanism was always way to heavy to implement ina commerical airliner, the navy figured it out with the f-14, wich is a well performing jet, so it could work very well.

    It was beloved that this was a safer configuration in case of an accident with the passengers being thrust into their seat helping to mitigate the forces instead of being throw out of them and only being held in by a belt during the crash. Having heard that, that is why Jerry Anderson of Thunderbirds fame had the the seat facing backwards in Captain Scarlett's Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle

    8:51 I'm pretty sure that there both engines on one side would have to fail for there to a complete loss of control. With the reliability of modern engines, that seems likely to be less of a problem now.

    Is there any serious explanation why the engines have to rotate following the wing movements and not be rigidly attached to the fuselage or strakes? How much does this constructive solution (putting the engine near the end of the wing) make the wing heavier compared to a clean swing wing?

      @@animeemail8902 Couldn't, at high-speed whole construction will fall apart under pressure if you rotate the engine in XY. Also if the structure somehow survives you will stall the aircraft.

    in a hind sight of modern classic aernautical engineering, I'd move the engines to the centre fuselage with thrut vectoring exhaust nozzle instead of the whole pylon, and I'd remove the tail fuselage and blend the rest of the body with the wing

    The C2 for aircraft carriers for the United States are used as prevention of neck injury during a catapult launch. A C2 everyone who is a passenger has to lean into their seat belts upon cat shot. Until you are told to relax after the takeoff and fast climb. Also the rear facing seats were able to install faster in modules after cargo delivery.

    @FoundAndExplained - a possible reason for the seats being reversed could be that Wallace was looking at the military transport variant first - many UK troop transports favoured this seating - which is still seen as safest in an emergency - but has fallen out of favour.

    When I was enlisted in the USAF back in the 1980's, the troop seats in the C-141 and C-5 (upper deck) where always facing back towards the tail. I found it uncomfortable during flight and especially at take off and landing. I was told the configuration was for safety reasons.

    Beautiful, however I doubt the engine mount joints would handle repeated stress of being pulled in multiple directions as metallurgy of the jet age wasn't understood until the Comet airliners started crashing, that plus the complexity of controlling the aircraft with electronics of the day would have made this a tall order. Moving the engines inboard and vectoring thrust from them could have worked alot better, that way if one engine is lost you can still control the aircraft.

      It was certainly ahead of its time. In the late 50s they were using vacuum tubes although they could have gotten hold of transistors.

      @@dannydaw59 Maybe if it were still in testing for like 10-15 years giving technology time to catch up, like present day stealth fighters trace their lines back to F117 which were tested for around the same time, but still launched in a semi primitive state (lacking radars, issues with paint etc) which the high maintenance cost led to their short service lives. I still think the engine mount pins would be it's main weakness, as they simply didn't have the advanced knowledge of metallurgy and how jets put a strain on different points.

    The office of Barnes Wallis is preserved at the RAF Museum in Hendon: His furniture, desk, drawing board etc.
    There is a small aerodynamic test model of this aircraft in the recreated office.

    Rear facing seats are much safer in a crash than forward facing. In some passenger transport aircraft made for the RAF (e.g. Vickers VC10) I recall all the seats were rear facing as the troops didn’t have a choice to fly with anyone else but this was never translated into the civilian version. As Vickers mostly made military designs it probably never occurred to the blueprint artist to do anything different.

    As much as this plane is a beauty, like legit it looked like flying royalty, as soon as I saw how much those engines could gimbled how much the plane need them all working to fly I knew why this project was canceled.
    Sadly with 50's material science those engines were just a bad day away from being ripped off their mounts of snapping the wing. And throw in plane where losing a single engine means you're now in a flying train wreck, yeah... sadly it was just too ahead of it's time. And god, I don't even want to think of how complex working those mounts would be.
    Now if someone wanted to make one today with modern materials and fly by wire technology, I think it could work. Any billionaires watching this video who want to take on a high risk/high reward aeronautics project?

    First question that popped into my head when I saw how this plane would steer by using its engines: What if you lose 1 engine?
    So nice idea but there's a clear reason why it was never build.
    Also, he came up with a cargo submarine (I'm assuming for civilian use?). What on earth would be the benefit of that compared to a surface ship?

      Re steering in the event of engine loss; shut down one on the other side or throttle both back to balance forces. As for the submarine I seem to recall it had something to do with great circle routes under the Arctic ocean. Wouldn't have worked down south ; )

    I know the seating configuration was a safety feature used on some planes, but if memory serves there was a study done back in the day about the effects of transitioning and buffeting when moving through the sound barrier more specifically the deceleration stage of flight. The thought was that military personnel would be accustomed to it and expect it but until super sonic flight was common place for commercial applications civilians might be injured. I believe the study was done several times, including the Concord aircraft.

    Same reasons we put infant car seats backwards in cars. Increase in survivability plus increases comfort on the long deceleration times needed to stop safely.

    5:45 For the same reason rear facing baby car seats are the most popular today, in the event of sudden deceleration rear facing seat reduces the stress inflicted to the back and neck. Spinal injuries are the most prevalent injuries in front facing crashes. The RAF (due to testing finding it safer) personnel transports usually have rear facing seats, civilian airlines won't adopt them because of cost, and I assume consumers would rather face the front than the back.

    The reason to have the seats backwards is that they offer better safety in the event of an accident, as you are pushed into your seat rather than thrown out of it. RAF transport aircraft adopt this layout for this reason and the Avro proposed Vulcan based airliner.

    Well go back in history to the VC- 10 use by the Royal Air Force.
    Back till the time I entered the RAF Basic Training at RAF Swinderby we got the chace to fly in the vc10 and for safety reasons at that time some RAF jet passenger aircrarft had the seats facing Backwards.

    The RAF required rear facing seats on all their transport aircraft from the late 40s to the 70s. Only the types entering service after the VC10s reverted to forward facing seats. The BEA Tridents retained their reward facing seats in the first few rows after BA took them over, and I flew to Berlin aboard them regularly in the late 70s.

    i remember on the game "simpleplanes" I built a.. thing that was entirely flown and controlled using engines but it had no wings so some of those engines were always pointing down to some degree but they could be angled back (or slightly forward for slowing down). Needless to say while I could fly it as i built it and knew how too, no one else ever gave it a good review lol. Hooray for quirky flying things real or otherwise

    It would be good to see a video about the Rolls Royce Griffith supersonic VTOL airliner. As a child I had an aircraft book and there was a picture of one. I think it had 12 engines for thrust and dozens of lift engines.

    5:51 it’s a safety measure, a lot of high-speed trains today have the provisions for it, as it’s been found that when undergoing a catastrophic failure and deceleration at speed, a backwards facing chair will give better bodily support, lessening the chance for whiplash related injuries, as well as providing a physical barrier between the occupants and debris. For more context, look up the 1984 German ICE crash. A large percent of the survivors from the derailed portion of the train have their lives attributed to rear-facing seats

    The backwards seats are for safety. Many passenger aircraft manufacturers in the 50's and '60', about the same time the auto industry was considering, and resisting, seat belts. Because the aircraft moves forward, humans riding along are moving forward, too. If the plane was to make a hard landing, sitting backwards allowed the kinetic energy of the human body to be absorbed by the full area of the seat back.
    Remember Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's 'Thunderbirds'. They did a live action SF show in the early '70's called UFO. That programme also featured the Amderson's usual panoply of really cool paramilitary machines. One in UFO was a armoured land vehicle that featured a driver facing backwards, using TV's to navigate with some semblance of VR. The driver just had to remember to steer right if he wanted to go left, and vice versa. Facing front, passengers in a moving vehicle, plane or tank, would be thrown forward in the event of a crash, or rapid deceleration, contorting their bodies while the seat belt cuts them in half. However safer travelling in backwards facing seats was, Public focus groups showed that the Public was NOT ready to fly backwards, not being able to see what's coming at them. So sitting backwards on a plane was dropped by designers. Seat belts in cars, and later, airbags, were introduced into cars in the late 70's and '80's eventually becoming mandatory.

    That vector trust mechanics would have been a nightmare and even today with fly by wire and fluid dynamic calculations of airflow no one suceeded in bringing a design to the market that does not need control surfaces. but heck, all those advanced 50s and 60s designs just look absolutely amazing. imagine a world with the sky full of those things, 6 wheeled nuclear cars running the children to school and massive spinning space stations where you can book your holiday on.

    Up until 20 years ago, assorted rear-facing seats were not uncommon in commercial airliners in the US. They were removed as seating density marched ever upward.

    Could still work; Using the engines as a whole as attitude control may be insane, but aligning the engines with the fuselage while sweeping the wings is relatively simple. Adding modern directional nozzles to the engines would replace the initial directional control idea of pivoting of the engines on their pylons and effectively create the same control principle.

    The rear facing seats could be for aesthetics. Going that fast it might be better to see where you have gone, then the blur of where you are going?

    Steward and Stewardess seats are backwards because rear facing seats are safer than forward facing, so this could be the reason for the rear facing seats on this Vickers. Although I’m not sure when the tests were done, this may not have been known when those blueprints were drawn up.

    My biggest question regards the shifting CG with movement of the wings. Most VG wings aren't carrying the huge mass of the engines . Avoiding this is one reason why the Tomcat uses a partial sweeping wing, allowing all external stores to be carried by the fuselage and wing 'shoulder'. Yes, I do realize that the center-of-pressure changes with the sweep angle and speed of the aircraft . I will say for sure that's it's a cool-looking machine.

    “Reverse” seats arrangement probably for passengers comfort as well. Reducing G-force on body flying supersonic.
