    What would you make using the Mayku FormBox?

  • @bobf3598
    @bobf3598 3 года назад

    I've operated huge versions of these. We use to use cool air fans after forming. The cooling helps the form pop out. If you get tiny bubbles appear in the formed part, that means there's moisture trapped in the plastic. Place in a very low heat convection oven for few hours or overnight to dry the sheets before forming.

    suggestion, in your model have a small hole all the way through from back to nostril so the vacuum has a way to pull at that bend point

      In the article I wrote about thermoforming, I go over that detail and other things to improve your pulls when using the Mayku Formbox. In this case, it's less the material needing to be pulled more, and that there's too much material for the space it needs to fit in. - Alec

    What about using a heat gun while it's vacuuming to help pull the webbing out?

    • @MatterHackers
      @MatterHackers  5 лет назад

      On something that small, it wouldn't help too much. Webbing comes from there being too much material so it folds over itself, like how a tailor will remove material in a dress or a suit to make it fit better on a person instead of bunching up around their joints. We can't really do that with plastic, so the best shot would be to keep it less droopy and therefore it needs to stretch to cover it more. Great idea though, and it does help with bigger projects that don't get enough heat before the vacuum catches it. - Alec

    I wonder if it would be useful for making custom cases for components.. Print a buck. Vac form the shape and bam the item you place in the case will have a perfect home and not. Bounce around.. And if it's not sensitive save the print step and just vac the item!

    • @MatterHackers
      @MatterHackers  5 лет назад +1

      You'd basically be making something just like the 3D Phil figure. If you're thinking of something like a circuitboard there may be too many details of differing heights or the pins might poke through the plastic. But something like a phone case isn't a bad idea! I may have to try that. - Alec

      @@MatterHackers or even a transportation case for like drone parts or something where it doesn't need soft padding but instead locked in place

    • @MatterHackers
      @MatterHackers  5 лет назад

      Okay, so sticking your phone in it doesn't work out too great. The phone was fine, but the plastic didn't conform around it enough to hold on. It's more of a specifically shaped dish than a case. - Alec

    • @TeamMayku
      @TeamMayku 5 лет назад

      Great idea - what we've found useful is making a slightly larger 3D printed version of what you are trying to make a case for - this way you can tweak it to make whatever you are putting in the case, extremely snug. Sort of like what Playdud did with packing on this guy: www.mayku.me/article/playdude-creates-professional-blister-packaging-with-the-formbox

      @@MicheleHjorleifsson We've tried it, but there's a couple things about it we didn't consider and had problems with: mold release is key and resin is exothermic. The resin we poured in wouldn't come out, even if we tried breaking the mold; it was just way too stuck. In other cases, I've had resin with a quick set time heat up the tupperware it was in and melt it to the plastic sheet I had on the table. Use mold release and a resin that takes a long time to cure and you should be better off than we were. What did you want to make? - Alec
