Whoever was the casting director for the first season did a fantastic job when they cast Jensen and Jared as brothers and of course that only gets stronger when you spend as much time as they did together and luckily liked each other (most of the time)
I would find me and my best friend doing this. We grew up together, and then were room mates for 8 years. But I think this was happening with us by the time we moved out of home.
