Previous QLS guest MC Serch....his missus is a massive fan and there's a collaborative connection. The Smiths first NYE gig was with Lovebug Starski---and Factory Records i was basically built on its love of New York, Chicago & Detroit house / club culture. The late Andy Rourke, played bass and grew up with Johnny in the Smiths....that guy's playing Stanley Clarke over Morrissey lyrics and that's what set them apart from copyists that followed in their wake. It wasn't 'depressing' 'miserable' because Johnny Marr's connection to the latest club and street culture meant they were never going to be this Turn Of The Century relic that only referenced 60s/70s working class English motifs.
@@QuestloveSupreme Serch cited 'Co-Defendants' as a potential name...but hadn't mentioned it recently. Andrew Berry, Mike Pickering...all those Haçienda regulars all must be super-tuned into all the emerging US scenes---even on one leg Factory Records & New Order managed to underwrite a nightclub open *seven days a week...and funnily enough an out-of-time entity like The Smiths countered all the passing trends, but in its engine Johnny Marr probably was switched onto all of them: hip hop, electro, house, etc.
Music is the great one , the connector! one love and peace from Ireland!
So happy to see this interview. Marr is one of my top 5 guitarists.
Thank you so much.
