Paul Simon added it to his Playlist and he told David Draiman that it is better than the original. Paul wrote it to be sung that way but the record company wouldn't allow him to because they were folk singers. David was classically taught, he was trained as a Cantor. He had the flu and a 102% fever on the live Conan show.
I believe music is truly a spiritual entity. I feel all my emotions through listening to music and believe if people really listen to music and love it they will be moved to. One song that always moves me to tears is Hallelujah. To me it is the purist of songs along with giving highest praise to God. Simply put music is beautiful and life can be expressed in music through all genres.
This song was brought from the past to let us know what is to come if we don’t wake up and stop the silence and speak out for our young generation, but we are being lead like sheep and people are afraid to speak for fear of being silenced. This is a masterpiece written by Simon 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You would likely find even more inspiration from the official video of this song by Disturbed. It's quite powerful. But a bigger screen than your phone would be better. It's so beautiful.
David Draiman was raised in the Jewish religion, trained as a Cantor... I always say Voice on loan from God... as someone else said the Neon god is in your hand, creating the sound of silence... Peace in Him always... amen
Most of Disturbed song are giving an understanding that whatever you are going through you are not alone. Another song of theirs is Hold to the memories
Shared that one with a friend of mine who has lost many loved ones in a short period of time. Also on recovery so I shared A Reason To Fight. This friend isn't a rock fan just hope that the songs help to inspire.
David Draiman was trained to be a cantor and comes from a long line of cantors. This is my favourite version and so much better than the original version he recorded. avid was unwell when he sang this on Conan O'Brien's show. Paul Simon, who was only 23 when he wrote this song, says that this is his favourite cover of this iconic song.
To me the phrase "neon god they made" has always meant the worship of materialism, or in Christian reference (which I'm not) the false idol or golden calf.
It's so strange to hear a Christian perspective after having left the cult years ago. I was a missionary and worship leader, but looking back at the brainwashed version of me it's like looking at a different person. I guess if you don't cringe at your past self, you haven't grown.
As to Paul Simon's meaning - his explanarion: “One of the biggest hang-ups we have today is the inability of people to communicate, not only on an intellectual level, but on an emotional level as well. So you have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate. It’s called, “The Sound of Silence”. - Paul Simon 1966 You can see/hear him say this before they begin their performance here: ruclips.net/video/DczvzKzNLbU/видео.html
This is my favourite version of this song, not a metal fan but love his softer gentler songs, my other favourites by them is Hold on to Memories and Reason to Fight. Have you reacted to any Home Free videos, How Great Thou Art would be a good starting point x
Simon and Garfunkel neon god was the tv in the corner of the room stopping conversations today it is the mobile phone stopping everything, even looking where you are going
I would like to see you react to Cris Kläfford "Cold at the Altar". He is a Swedish musician with a great voice. My interpretation of the neon gods is advertising. The neon signs that screams out buy me in order to get a better life. We worship ads/consuming, and forget the thing in life that is important, people and the connection between them.
My interpretation is the television. When the song originally came out tvs were just coming into regular peoples homes. It was a golden time back then. Now look around you! People looking at their smart phones. 'The people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made' indeed. But for me both songs are like bookends and about the messenger. The original song is about the messenger being a young idealistic man that has a very dark message and the song was his vision, a very dark vision but he is trying to reach out to people. Disturbed's version is the messenger who has walked the world and is a lot older. He is still trying to reach out to people, but he is getting angry and frustrated. What is worse is that he is seeing his vision coming true.
It was about television. That was the neon god we made. It was 1964 when Paul Simon wrote this, and it was a response to JFK’s assassination. Now we’re so much more disconnected with our phones, yet apparently being more connected.
Yes ~ please do that cover! I read the Neon God line as a poke in the eye of the ad industry, kind of an irony - appearing in the middle of their hit song! Who knew it would hit while it was written, yet another layer of irony this’!
I’m really not sure what the real meaning of this song is but when I hear it it’s like no one can hear you no matter how loud your screams for help. Kinda like mental health or drug addiction or anything really where your crying out for help ❤❤❤
Of all the opra singers, song writers, vocal coaches, different types of singers , and just normal people reacting to this and many other songs... this is the only one that is so full of himself that his crap smells like roses. Everyone else is into the majesty of this song, and this guy makes it all about himself. I should've known. He hears neon God and goes into a fluster..... well, this came on my feed so I'm commenting. But last time
My whole life nothing but Darkness I just put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward try my best stay ahead of Darkness good for you young man you keep the faith but my life Jesus is nowhere around I've been looking for him for 45 years my life it is what it is
I know that you have a message. Watching you react to the masterful cover by David was refreshing. My fear is that when you find out that the voice you like was trained as a Jewish cantor your enjoyment might be tainted. As a 'Christian' rocker I fear that you and I have more differences than I do with David. The voice that I as a Catholic man listens to and who truly enjoys the discipline and training that was instilled to a believer who is an elder brother in God can not be denied as being a gift. David may have fallen away, as have many of us as a secular society have, but his foundation is strong. I truly enjoy this version, even though many may think it is 'ungodly' because not only was it sang by a jew but one who was trained to sing as a jew. David has a beautiful voice that was granted to him by God and I hope that all of us can appreciate that.
Hold on to the Memories, Reason To Fight, The Light and Inside The Fire. Inside The Fire is when David's girlfriend committed suicide and he was the one who found her. Reason To Fight is one for addiction. Hold On To The Memories are about people who have passed. The Light from what I gathered is about not giving up on yourself because of something bad happens to you.
Dude, there's no mention of "Jesus" in the song. Is it impossible for you to understand that the power of spirituality isn't always about a specific religion: that people can share a connection of love and understanding among others without labeling it one ism or another, Both the writer of the song and the man singing it are Jewish, a faith that is being violently attacked by members and preachers of monstrous misinterpretations of Christ's very simple teaching: "Love your neighbor as you would love yourself" When you take a miraculous song and rendition like this and use it as just another prop to proselytize then you just missed the entire meaning of the song itself. People hearing without listening, It means being so full of yourself and your beliefs you can't or won't understand anyone or anything that may challenge those beliefs. Next time, chill the hell out and just enjoy the music.
**christopher worth** I agree with you and i have gained that opinion myself over years of studying various religions and their beliefs. The bottom line throughout seems to be the basics: love your neighbor, do good deeds, help those needing help, honor your God/Gods (or Goddess/Goddesses), be honest, dont steal, slander, kill other people - you know, on & on... All that said, please recognize that this reactor is reacting within his own own personal beliefs, but that doesn't make him wrong. I didn't think he said too much throughout the video & even seemed to be aware of not wanting to disrupt much. He is fullfilling his destiny, so try not to be so hard on him. Peace & love.🎼🎶🤘🥀
One reaction to their official video that I personally like and many other fans of Disturbed. Is when Tribal people watched it and had their reactions. They have also done reactions to both Zombie from The Cranberrys's and Bad Wolves.
And The sound of silence is we don't listen to each other it doesn't matter who believes in the Almighty a power that is bigger than themselves God is God and he is bigger than the universe and people just don't get it and that's why they don't want to listen and that's the sound of silence
the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenament halls...whispered (WHISPERED) in the sound of silence......................we do not hear those words...distracted by the flashing of the neon lights.....you are not reacting to the depth of those words.....spending too much time on comparing your belief and music to this master piece
I think that song means there's a lot of Rich religious leaders who are greedy with their own private jets from people that are poor and give to them and the neon gods they pray to listen to it listen to people listen to God's word from the Bible that man May inherit the whole world and lose his soul
And it doesn't matter if you're Jewish or not God says who is with us is not against us who believes in God but people want to divide us especially religion you know the word religion is not in the Bible just believe in God in Jesus that's all he's asking he's not asking you to give to these rich powerful religious leaders that are in dog politics now and the neon God guess who that is
The final message is about truth - the words of the prophets- that come from the neon light - and its heard in the sound of silence "For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be" Matthew 24.27 The neon light that split the night The thing is that it says people bowed and prayed to the neon god -they made-????? What the profets say is exactly not to bow down to men made idols but the REAL ONE Unless you understand the neon god they made is not the neon light that gave the truthful message in the end, the message of the song is just confusing. Also the author saying its about the fact that people don't communicate? when he's saying the words of the prophets are being revealed in the silence - completely confusing and not trustworthy at all
I wish you didn't talk during the song! Listening is an art! You talked more about yourself than the lyrics and meaning of the song, which are so prophetic. We bow and pray to neon lights that we have made are the loudest and strongest lyrics in the song for the world today. We look to the world for life not God
Don’t look for meaning where there isn’t any. This was written by a talented arrogant young man who thought he was smarter than the rest of the world. Great song but wasn’t written to honor God or His Son and doesn’t.
When this was written, the neon god was television. Today, it is your phone and computer
You are holding the neon God in your hand, technology.
Exactly 🫣
WOW
I think the neon God was about television being obsessed over at the time.
Someone said that the og song was a warning and this cover is the anger that the warning was ignored .
I believe music is truly a spiritual entity. I feel all my emotions through listening to music and believe if people really listen to music and love it they will be moved to. I love playing this on the piano to his isolated vocals
David Draiman was raised in the Jewish religion, trained as a Cantor... I always say Voice on loan from God... as someone else said the Neon god is in your hand, creating the sound of silence... Peace in Him always... amen

That song makes me cry every time I hear it.

My friend, it is my belief that the 'Neon God they made' he refers to is our modern technology. For what its worth.
That thing you're holding in your right hand is one of those references to the "neon god" when used in excess.
To me the phrase "neon god they made" has always meant the worship of materialism, or in Christian reference (which I'm not) the false idol or golden calf.
You gotta listen with headphones, cans!
Love this! YES! Please cover this song! You tag line was part of my life as well. Praise Jesus!
❤✝🙌🙏☝🦋
It's so strange to hear a Christian perspective after having left the cult years ago. I was a missionary and worship leader, but looking back at the brainwashed version of me it's like looking at a different person. I guess if you don't cringe at your past self, you haven't grown.
It’s been over a decade since I left. It’s like taking a blurry lens off and seeing things clearer. Hope all is well with you!
Music is so much better now that I can enjoy the actual talent behind it! This dude is nuts and he should absolutely NOT cover it!

🌹❤️ Beautiful reaction & analysis!
Awesome to get a Christians point of view on this song !
This is my favourite version of this song, not a metal fan but love his softer gentler songs, my other favourites by them is Hold on to Memories and Reason to Fight. Have you reacted to any Home Free videos, How Great Thou Art would be a good starting point x
To me the neon God meant T.V. back then now it is phones and iPads. Everybody focused on that instead of person sitting right in front of you.
Yes. Please cover this song.
Simon and Garfunkel neon god was the tv in the corner of the room stopping conversations today it is the mobile phone stopping everything, even looking where you are going
Oh! You must listen to it again in silence. 🤫
The “neon god” was written about people’s fixation on the television and not communicating with each other
Great to hear and see a fellow Christian creative react with empathy to this song.
First time here looking forward to all your other videos
I would like to see you react to Cris Kläfford "Cold at the Altar". He is a Swedish musician with a great voice.

I subscribed. God bless you.
Should have watched the original version with great visuals
I’m really not sure what the real meaning of this song is but when I hear it it’s like no one can hear you no matter how loud your screams for help. Kinda like mental health or drug addiction or anything really where your crying out for help ❤❤❤
One of Disturbed songs A Reason to Fight is about addiction.
You really need to watch the video that goes with this. You are missing half of it.
Of all the opra singers, song writers, vocal coaches, different types of singers , and just normal people reacting to this and many other songs... this is the only one that is so full of himself that his crap smells like roses. Everyone else is into the majesty of this song, and this guy makes it all about himself. I should've known. Song originated in the mid 60's in response to the assassination of JFK The Vietnam War, as the complete chaos of that era
My whole life nothing but Darkness I just put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward try my best stay ahead of Darkness good for you young man you keep the faith but my life Jesus is nowhere around I've been looking for him for 45 years my life it is what it is

Shhhh
He had the flu when he performed this on Conan. That's why he's sitting.
Your staring into the neon god
homie how are you about to do a reaction to music without headphones or speakers lol
Would love to hear your comments on “How Can You Not” Leanna Crawford ❤️
Guess what Joel? My like on your video was #777!! Coincidence? I think not!!
Hold on to the Memories, Reason To Fight, The Light and Inside The Fire. Inside The Fire is when David's girlfriend committed suicide and he was the one who found her. Reason To Fight is one for addiction. Hold On To The Memories are about people who have passed. This song was written by two Jews and now it’s being sung by a Jewish man using his training as a chazan (cantor)

And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon God they made
Materialism in the abstract, but also television, and these days cell phones
IMO
Neon Gods they made..mamon.
Neon God can be translated to technology, everyone is fixated to their phone or mobile device.
And The sound of silence is we don't listen to each other it doesn't matter who believes in the Almighty a power that is bigger than themselves God is God and he is bigger than the universe and people just don't get it and that's why they don't want to listen and that's the sound of silence
React to DISTURBED'S. THE LIGHT
Neon God- Television and the media
Your Christian perspective is Disturbed!
neon god is money lights action
To me S and G version was a prophecy pointing to the future. David's was more like you you didn't listen.
just so you know .
the neon God., is tv.
He was sick when he did this
the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenament halls...whispered (WHISPERED) in the sound of silence......................we do not hear those words...distracted by the flashing of the neon lights.....you are not reacting to the depth of those words.....spending too much time on comparing your belief and music to this master piece
why
Actually the tune is about there being no music. Check lyrics...
I think that song means there's a lot of Rich religious leaders who are greedy with their own private jets from people that are poor and give to them and the neon gods they pray to listen to it listen to people listen to God's word from the Bible that man May inherit the whole world and lose his soul

Faith perspective.
Weird.
Art Garfunkel has the voice of an angel, Draiman is the voice of the Devil.
You have the brains of a goat
Draiman has the voice of an angel and a demon. Both.

Ummm…that is humanity
Wirh religion suppression
You Trump-ed it…well
False idol

Just subbed
YOU AINT HEARING SHIT WITHOUT HEADPHONES!
Heck yea cover it. Check out Tom Macdonald. He was close to suicide as well.
David found his girlfriend after she committed suicide. Inside The Fire is about that experience.
