  • A few bits of crowd footage put together from the Qualifying session for the 2012 British GP.
Qualifying was delayed due to an intense downpour.
With the lack on-track action, the crowd began to entertain themselves. It turned out to be one of the highlights of the weekend, indeed of all the Grand Prix I've attended.
For nearly half an hour, the crowd performed repetitive Mexican Waves, starting from the first corner at Abbey, going all the way along the Start / Finish Straight, round Club Corner, to The Vale. The waves even continued round to Stowe Corner!
A few waves in, and the Pit Lane began to participate. Teams came out to wave, drivers too, officials, even some rather reluctant marshals join in!
I'm uploaded this footage, as a little personnel protest to Silverstone Circuit for building a hideous hotel slap bang, right in the middle, along the Start / finish Straight. I have always believed that the Start / Finish Straight of Grand Prix circuit should have a big, long, continuous grandstand, for the atmosphere and for the 'look' of the circuit, the impressiveness. As witnessed at Zandvoort 2021, for the Dutch GP. The scenes that particular GP created were absolutely awesome and really is what Silverstone should be aiming for.
In my opinion, the hotel that's been built at Silverstone will affect, negatively, the atmosphere of the Grand Prix and be to be to the detriment of the 'look' of the circuit during the Grand Prix.
I understand that Silverstone needs to make money and if they really had to have a hotel on the Start / Finish Straight, they could have quite easily incorporated a hotel above a continuous, main Grandstand running along the whole straight. It’s been achieved at cricket grounds already.
Sadly, I think the sort of thing seen in this video will not happen now. The hotel will break up any atmosphere, it will mean less seats available for the real fans and really will be to the detriment of the GP.
One things for certain, we will no longer see a continuous Mexican Wave along the Start / finish Straight anymore!
I attended the Grand Prix with my friends, Kieren and Richard.
