I've probably seen somewhere between 75 to 100 Broadway shows in my life, and Lea in this role is one of the best performances I've ever seen. I went three times and sat right up front and it was worth every penny. (Actually, over 100,000 pennies after it was said and done. LOL) It really stinks that she wasn't eligible for a Tony because she would have won...Hands down. I've never seen a more Tony-worthy performance.

For those of you who haven't seen it in the theatre and keep complaining about the audience cheering, I can't explain to you how unique what is going on in the August Wilson theatre 6 days a week is. Lea is giving a truly INSPIRED performance. On a level that is, no exaggeration, once in a generation. As an audience member you can't help but react viscerally in the moment because you are overwhelmed with emotion. One of the greatest theatre experiences I have ever had. I cannot wait to get back and cheer some more!

I had goosebumps and was literally sobbing! It’s such a shame that she is not eligible to be nominated for a Tony, as she would no doubt run away with it.

It still doesn't take away the fact that it is COMPLETELY inappropriate not only for the cast but to your fellow audience member who wants to hear the music without people yelping in the middle of the song. Reserve your praises and applause at the end of the nunber not during. Heck, even shower it at the end of the play. That's what the curtain call is for. You are taking away a great experience from others who wants to truly capture the moment. It is not that hard to not "woo" every single chance you have. Be mindful of that next time before you have yet another urge to ruin a fine, musical moment.

Completely agree about sitting on your hands and keeping your mouth shut while the performances are going on - except for laughter. Laughter at funny stuff is always welcomed and acceptable. I think the cast would be disappointed if people didn't laugh when they were "supposed to."

    • @balesjo

This performance, the audience was a bit better behaved with the applause compared to earlier ones. But this rousing finale, I can appreciate it bringing the audience to their feet before she's finished holding the final note. Now, I did look at ticket prices and was shocked at the price difference between Lea Michelle performances and those with Julia Benko. I'm sure those for Lea are due to the star power she brings, but the videos I've seen with Julie, she does a great job as Fanny. I'd definitely love to see both of their performances.

    • @Makeji
      @Makeji Год назад +15

@@balesjo Short answer, Lea is a star and Julie is an accomplished actress/singer who doesn't have the IT factor. When Lea performs her entire being is engaged. As someone who I know follows theater, you know what I'm talking about - it's Lupone, Peters, Lansbury. They just own the stage. In a tweet I saw the other day, her mother was lost and a young man helped direct her to the theater. She told him her daughter was Julie Benko, the understudy in Funny Girl and she came every Thursday to see her. Therein lies the crux of the problem. Julie thinks of herself as an understudy.
As for box office - during the month of August, there was no increase in capacity, if anything, it was slightly down and tickets were going for discounts. Capacity was around 79% - $500k a week. Not enough to survive. If Lea had not been coming on board, the show would have closed.
Capacity is now always in the high 90s, likely affected by lower attendance on Thursdays. Receipts are running at $1.6 million. I would love to see both women, because I really hoped Julie would knock it out of the park. I've heard her complete audio and seen Lea's clips. I can watch Lea over and over, but seldom make it entirely through one of Julie's many songs posted here.
I know you are a theater/singing buff and understand what I am saying.

Her journey of emotions in this song is just WOW. From being brokenhearted to self-pitying (?) to picking herself up then being so resolute and sure of herself in the end? How do you not root for Fanny? Lea makes it so that Fanny doesn't even need to convince anyone she's the greatest star. Fanny simply is and it's just your choice whether to root for her or not. And holy shit that raspy sound at the end at the of 4:08 - 4:12 sounds so satisfying and full of feels!

I've commented that I like the finale in the revival even better than the one in the original musical and movie. While "My Man" was a signature song for Brice in real life, ending the original musical and movie with it left her on a rather low note. But Brice continued to have a brilliant career after her marriage broke up. The revival bringing "Funny Girl" from the movie and transitioning in to DROMP show that while she was left emotionally distraught when Nick left her, she did not let that derail her career. She goes hard charging into the future with the same determination that originally made her a Ziegfeld star.

This is what the movie Funny Girl got wrong - even if 'My Man' was Brice's signature song, it ended the movie on a self-pitying note when it was supposed to be a triumphant one that shows she'll overcome her sadness and go on being great. And the "Here I am" bit was meant to be a three-part punch that shows how far Fanny goes through the show - the first time in 'Greatest Star' was her dream of fame, "Hey Mr. Ziegfeld here I am!" The second, in 'Parade' was her desire for Nick, "Hey Mr. Arnstein here I am!" But the third - 3:27 - the third time is for herself.

despite all the leading lady drama for the show, I didn't got to watch it live, but base on this finale clip
I think she really did a great job! I watched it on West End years ago, i fell asleep, it was sooooo boring
The interpretation of Funny Girl I love it! She didn't go for the beautiful voice but emotional presentation
(same reason I love Ann Hathaway's I Dreamed a dream)
the emotional transition from the song to the triumphant ending it's so clean and so make sense
    Brava

I’ve never been there I went for the first time to see the play wicked. I invited some friends, but none of them wanted to go. And it was the most exciting time for my journey into retiring. It was the first thing I did when I retired and I was proud that I went, and I was happy that I went the next play , is funny girl for me
