They do sound wicked cool. Carson Brown has a badass (I think) CR480 tribute that he brings to the 125 Dream Race each year. Has a custom swingarm and stuff to look like the works bike from that era.
I'm lucky to say that I have ridden a bunch of John's build and this one is in my top 3. John and Ping are correct, it is so fun to ride! I'm currently building one! Thanks, John!
I had 2 of these. The trick to reduce the pinging was to run 2 head gaskets with some gasket sealer between. There was a different needle that cleaned up the jetting. I tried the Electron carb but went back to the stock carb. The forks sucked no what what you tried. You needed to start it wearing MX boots or you would break your ankle. 3rd gear starts guranteed me many holeshots at Carlsbad. i still have the brochure hes talking about with Danny Chandler.
Looks sweet. I had chance to ride the 81 CR450 back in 81. Was riding 80cc class back then. Rode a GP class with the 450 as 14 year old. I won that race. However I remember the first gear pulled farther than my third gear on the 80. Impressive with new pro link. Never ever raced open bike, until four-stroke arrived. I believe 40 Hp is plenty, for normal Mx rider (todays 250 four stroke). 😊
💯 most riders don’t need any more than 40HP. Even good riders lugging a 450 around are probably riding it in that part of the power. Just settles in the bumps better than a spun up 250.
I had one of these rockets and loved it. Way too easy to over jump anything with just a touch too much throttle. I believe they could have used a slightly heavier crank, it would have smoothed out the mid to top revs. Mine was like riding a 60+ HP hand grenade, you'd better have it pointed where you want to go when you pulled the pin because you were going to go......RIGHT NOW !!!!
Then you never had a HVA 500 CR 85-87 , they are the worst ever in the evo 500cc bikes era ! The honda 500cc is like almost kickstart a 125cc against those Husky watercooled 500cc bikes :P ! But the most brutal is my Lito 500cc -62 or my Monark/Eso 600cc -59 , I`m fucking scared to start them everythime because they kick back with like insane power !
I had a 1984 cr500, didn't have any ping...only zing! I've ridden a lot of bikes...this one was the fastest by far! To be fare..it was a factory built race machine done to the nuts!
@@whiskeythrottlemedia do you know any aftermarket pegs that will fit this bike without modifying the peg mounts on the frame? I have the same bike! Came from Kaplan Cycles
Badass. Sounds so good with the head work. Have to be smooth on the throttle and use the decieving torque around those corners. Bike looks great around the track with those forks. Motocross bikes were not meant to be stock, put the wider pegs on it. What pipe and carb and reeds was he running ? Ported ? The torque that bike has is incredible you can see it. Long live Magoo 🤙🏻
Sssiiik man i had 3 of these siik things in the 80s n 90s yeah i detonated mine twice the piston just blew up in the head nuts power i had kx420 yz465,rm465,500 all were gold yhe rm465,500 felt so much better but at least this thing would pull ip with disc on front top stuff man 🇦🇺🇦🇺lovit rockon
I have one of these and have a tip with the forks. XR600 forks fit perfectly, you just need to use the XR axle (2mm larger) and bearings as the outer race size is the same 👌
That is a great tip! Easy to find XR600 fork out there, I’ll get it for my 84 , also how can update the top triple calmp for modern one that also will be able to mount steering damper?
@@JohnnyDeep76. I used 96 forks, I'm sure most years would be the same. You would just need to find out what year they started using cartridge forks on the XR. Good luck 👍
He's put a later model front end on it, with, better brakes, I think I heard. A great idea for a bike that is to be ridden, and Not just a Garage Queen. So, why not put better footpegs on it? Keeping it original? : well, it's not with the forks. Get better, modern pegs for actual riding of the bike, - Ping And Mr Mullet said how bad the std ones are. For example: I run KTM 450RR footpegs on my 2001 CRE500, for extra fore and aft platform, extra outwards length, And, they're about 3/4" lower ( for old, non bendy knees) , and it only requires 1mm to be removed from one face of the pegs mounting area, and the KTM springs. Standard , up to 2016 KTM pegs, fit MY bike, being far bigger than the std CR500 ones, and, around 1/4/ 3/8" lower, and there are many 'take offs' in peoples Garages to be found. They make a Huge difference, and Mullet Moto can put the original "finger sized" pegs on when it's on display. I doubt the 480 has the same frame mounts as my 2001, but I'm sure he can find all sorts of modern pegs to fit straight on that wonderful bike. I'd love a 'finner".
I have so many people that act so tough and say how good they can ride, then I will fire up the 84 air cooled and they shut up and turn white and want nothing to do with it!
Gosh I hate those "Gotta keep it Original, gotta go OEM" types. The first things that we would do back in the day when we purchased a bike for our race season was throw away the stock bars (and get our favorite bend), change the OEM tires (and get Tires that suited our Race locales), and throw a Pipe & Silencer on it. Now the garage queen builders came out of no where over the past 15 years (especially in the U.K.) and are all about "OEM" and "Gotta keep it Original". I have a 1984 Suzuki RM250, 1985 Yamaha YZ250, 1986 Yamaha YZ80, 1987 Honda CR250, 1989 Kawasaki KX80 Big Wheel, 1990 Kawasaki KX125, 1992 Suzuki RM250 (that was my original Race Bike from 1992 thru 1995 that I was able to track down and buy back) and a 1994 Kawasaki KX250 and they are all ride ready and race ready. OEM parts just don't do it when your are truly riding and racing these bikes. Garage Queening them yes, but riding and racing them and having fun on them no. Aftermarket is a must. Sorry lost it there for a second, blood pressure always raises when talking about Garage Queen builders. Anyway great 1984 Honda CR500 build. Keep that throttle pinned W.F.O and keep on riding/racing these builds. Braaaapppp.
awesome bike and kudos for helping people remember Magoo
Magic…one of the best, one of the fastest, wildest riders of the ages🔥RIP
The big Air-cooled CRs look the best. I love the sound
I had one, loved that bike, Raced it, even took it woods riding.. never let down..
Dude I'm diggin this content. I'm glad there's still a spotlight on some of these classic bikes and mx legends. This stuff is awesome.
