      In the case of this dam, keeping the debris cleaned away from it would have allowed the water to flow through the dam instead of the water being forced to find a way around it. They do that here a couple of times a year so bad things like this don't happen.

      Pittsburgh has more bridges than any city in the world. It's amazing more collapses haven't happened with the amount of rain they get and all the rivers there. Grew up in Pittsburgh and can honestly say I never worried about bridges collapsing. Lol

    I am curious why the cable tree catcher with the buoys that is by the bridge in 2011 is not there today? Who would have ever guessed if you allow a dam to plug and do nothing about it will overflow. Seems a little fishy by the Rapidan dam

    Hurricane Harvey flooded the greater Houston area, my home was flooded for 4 days. I hope that fema can help these folks like they aided me. Pro tip, after your home is no longer flooded purchase at least one dehumidifier, and cut the lower sheet rock in your home and remove all the soggy insulation. Do not let mold get a foothold in your house. Good luck!

      If dehumidifiers are sold out, you could use a window air conditioner. Just set it on a table inside, run it, and collect the water. Basically the exact same thing as a dehumidifier but much easier to come accross.

      Nope if you have flood and home owners call insurance company and tell them I need help now. Went through this in 06 in Florida with four hurricanes. We were going around doing the work tearing ceiling tiles and insulation out and I told the higher-ups dont we have insurance for this, and they said yeah. Then told me well well well that makes sense. And our company was over insured so they listened and got on the phone and said We need this we need that and they got it. That's why you pay insurance.

      I'm sorry I understand we were insurance broke in Florida we had insurance on top of insurance and never once claimed and should have. Had our whole screen enclosure wiped out. Luckily I had friends in the business that repaired it. But sorry for that even having it sometimes doesn't help out.

      @@briansmith5469 there will be zero machinery and equipment locally available. Water remediation. Companies will be tapped out in 0.2 seconds. The best that most people will do is the advice given by this guy. And that's exactly what the remediation companies would do except with 5x the dehumidifiers, plus diesel heaters to keep the interior air temps at 90F-95F for ideal water saturation in the air for the dehumidifiers.

    All because nobody bothered to clean out the debris that was clogging the spillways. (Or just install a couple of logbooms upstream, angled to one side for easier cleanout.) Stepping on dollars to pick up pennies, people never learn.

      This was a major storm with major flooding and it unfolded in just a couple of hours.

      Every other dam in the country has booms that catch debris. Even conducting a feasabilty study, instead of just hiring an engineer to make a boom, speaks volumes about the incompetent management.
      That's before you even get to the part where they negligently ignored the results of their study.

      An earlier video stated that the company with the excavator to clear debris was five hours away from the dam at the time the flooding started. My question is there wasn't someone else with an excavator in the area that was just as qualified? I'm guessing there was

    There was some huge negligence on the part of the damn dam operator. If they had opened up the two emergency gates and started removing the debris that was blocking the 5 open gates, with an excavator with a claw. This would have never happened. I smell a negligence lawsuit coming up

    Here in northwest Iowa we have flooding also. It’s horrible. Windom isn’t too far away from me and I do have family there. Two days ago the water was heading for their house.

    The power generation equipment was removed awhile back so it was a "flow-in \ flow-out ' dam. It held no water back, until all the debris piled up and blocked flow.

      They cant safely take the store down because the ground is too unstable, but they are removeing as much as they can as any more houses or structures are just adding shrapnel to flow down river at high speed in flood waters which for obvious reasons is a bad thing

      They were in the planning phase of replacement versus repair. The initial study was done in 2021. Repairs would take at least 4 years (so, 2025). Replacement would take 10 years (2031). So, even if they had started the process in 2021, the dam still would not have been ready to handle this flooding.

    Well, the fact that the dam is still intact is a great indication of how well things were built back in those days. There are even stretches of old concrete highway that were built 100 years ago that are still around if you look hard enough! There are several sections of Highway 52 and Highway 61 in Southeast Minnesota, that are still in great shape after nearly a century in existence.

    Build back better, seems if the dam wasn't there the flow would have been normal, with all the dead trees that blocked half the dam intakes, added to the problem. Yes i know the dam was constructed in like 1910-12.

      Early on, I heard they had been talking about removing the dam, before this flood. It was used to make power in the past, but not in recent times.

    Rivers and streams change their course constantly over time. I live about 300 yards from the local creek and when I dig in my garden the rocks are all rounded and water worn, indicating the creek used to run through here.

    They were lucky, very very lucky. The water slowly ate away at the surrounding soil, allowing water flows to slowly increase over a few hours, it wasn't a sudden total collapse of the dam. A slow but steady increase in water flows allows people downstream to get out of the way of the incoming water, and that saves lives.

    The damn dam is history. Not worth trying to repair the erosion because it would be cheaper to demolish it and start all over. I would not be surprised if the final decision is to just demolish it and NOT rebuild it.

      This dam is an example of why we needed an infrastructure bill years ago but guess who blocked it for decades. I won't say the name but the initials are GOP. The dam is over 70 years old and needed to be updated or torn down even before the flood.

      The dam is owned by the county. Makes me wonder if they didn't get grants to help prevent clogging for floods, which is what lead to this. The dam couldn't keep up with the amount of rain. Or maybe the county was in a gridlock in the council on funds. Who knows.
