I also have Quad ESL-63. I also have Magnepan Tympani 1D. I wonder how these would sound with tri-amplification with: Quad II mono blocks; VTL Tiny Triodes mono blocks; Factory built Dynaco ST-70 mono blocks; and Audio Research EC-21 tube active crossovers. I hzve all of the above gear, but haven't set up yet. Any suggestions?
Not sure what you are suggesting, are you planning to combine both the Quad and Tympani 1D together ? The issue you will have to deal with are in-phase when there are multiple speakers involved. With multiple amp involve, you not only have to deal with phase, you also need to worry about time alignment. When all amps aren't the same, they will have different behavior. However, it's always fun to play, so think out of the box and enjoy messing around. I love to hear your experience afterward.
CA Diver Thank you for your input. Your response was what I was looking for. I am only going to run the Magnepan Tympani separately from the Quad ESL-63, so there will be no phase problems. I have no experience in tri-amping ribbon speakers. So I was looking for some heads up and insights. It was interesting that you mentioned the different amps would behave differently and cause time alignment problems. How would I solve this? Thanks,
If you can hear abnormally, you may have problems, if you don't, why care. HiFi is meant to be fun, enjoyable, not looking for trouble. It's only when you detected trouble you try to solve it. Hope it make sense ... I had listened to VTL Tiny Triode EL84 driving ESL-57 in Hong Kong playing the loudest ESL57 I ever heard. It's simply amazing. There is no hard rule in my opinion.... ST-70 was fine, I sold mine with Mullard in the 90's, I don't miss it other than the value. I mean, just enjoy and mess around, there is nothing to solve !
Here is the same piece play by my Magnepan MG3.6 driven by McIntosh MI-75 and CAT Signature pre-amp. Slightly different electronics than the ESL63 recording. I will make another one eventually using the same pre-amp but it can't be the same power amp. 845 SET 20watt is no way able to give enough juice to the 3.6 ruclips.net/video/sk4WPo6PtTo/видео.html
Nothing beats Quads for pure realism.
I love the 63, I use mine with Audio Note Gear !

I prefer Quad esl. More natural, more deep soundstage then magneplanar.
It's the first CD on the list. 李炜 宋飞 秋思幻想曲 - bbs.audio-gd.com/dv_rss.asp?s=xh..&boardid=5&id=25532&page=6
Lovely I have a pair but I don't play all these dreary audiophile music on it. I play rock
