    One of Queen Salote's famous lakalaka! I was priviledge to be part of this group who represented Tonga to the Pacific Music Festival in Melbourne 1983. Feel very spiritual listening to the music. Afo Koula led by Prof. Futa Helu, my mentor!!

    This is a Tongan faiva written as a lakalaka I think which tells the story of the voyage of Samoans from Tonga to Samoa (Sagone, Savaii)

    Sāngone (Sāmoan sā = tribe, Fijian (n)gone = child), was the name of a turtle from divine origin and featuring in Tongan myths about the Tuʻi Tonga king named Tuʻitātui in the beginning of the 12th century AD. Part of the history features prominently in a famous lakalaka written by queen Sālote somewhere around 1940, when the shell, claimed to be the original one from Sāngone herself was transferred to the Tupou College museum.

      Sangone navigated Samoans back home. Instead of letting the kings' turtle returned home toTonga as promised the Samoan killed it and ate it. According to the legend the king was furious when he heard of this. He said whoever know these phrase knows where Sangones' head was buried. "Keu kai mai ha ngulungulu mo tokoto. Keu kai mai ha loutaangia mo kokii. Keu kai mai ha kaupoo'ulia-'i-vao........"
      These are in the composition....

      @@wildfiehoka1657 in the samoan legend the Tuiatua and warriors Sa'umani caught a huge turtle off savaii. The samoans killed the turtle and hid the shell. The village now where that turtle was killed is Matena and Sagone. They are connected. However I believe Sangone was Samoan. Especially given the name Sagone is samoan.

      There is no oral history or proof that TT momo built pulemelei though. Agree with Sangone being the turtle that brought Lekapai (le'apai) back to Samoa. They killed the turtle after and hid the shell. Almost the exact same story as the samoan legend of how Sagone village came in to being.

      A'e. Malietoa has nothing to do with thks story. The samoan story goes that Sa'umani Afaese and a Tuiatua caught the huge turtle off the coast of savaii. They dragged it on land and it died there (hence the name of the village Matena) Tuiatua and Saumani said they wanted to share with their friend the Tuitoga. So they left and when they came back the samoan villagers had killed and cooked the turtle. And all that was left was burnt rubbish and burnt sand (hence sagolegole and sagonegone) and the Shell. The malietoa didn't even exist at this time.

    • @Mrkovana
      @Mrkovana 3 года назад +3

      Also to add on. This story is definitely connected to savaii Sagone and the sacred Sangone turtle of Tonga. In some legends of Tonga I read that Sangone was the mother of the Tuitonga. But you can feel free to correct me.
