Hi, I’m using an external mic with a adapter and for some reason the audio comes out really scrambled.
I know it’s not the mic cause I tested it on another device. Was wonder if you know how to fix it.

Adjust the mono audio and balance settings on iPad
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual.
Adjust any of the following: Mono Audio: Turn on to combine the left and right channels to play the same content. Balance: Drag the Left Right Stereo Balance slider.
For more details see this Apple support site. support.apple.com/guide/ipad/mono-audio-and-balance-ipad9a246ed2/ipados

I understand that your iPad's microphone works well during video recording, but you encounter issues when using voice recording apps or Messenger. Let's troubleshoot this! Here are some steps you can try:
      1. Check Microphone Permissions for Messenger:
      - Open the Settings app on your iPad.
      - Scroll down and tap on Messenger.
      - Toggle on the switch next to Microphone to grant Messenger permission to use your microphone⁵.
      2. Test the Microphone:
      - Open the Camera app.
      - To test the front microphone, record a video of yourself speaking while facing the front camera.
      - To test the back microphone, switch to the back camera and record another video.
      - Play back both videos to ensure your voice sounds clear⁴.
      3. Check for Obstructions:
      - Make sure the microphones on your iPad aren't blocked by your hands or a case.
      - If you have a screen protector, ensure it has an opening over the front microphone⁴.
      4. Update Messenger App:
      - Open the App Store on your iPad.
      - Check if there's an update available for the Messenger app and install it⁵.
      5. Restart Messenger App:
      - Swipe up from the bottom of your iPad screen to open the App Switcher.
      - Swipe left or right to find the Messenger app, then swipe it up or off the screen to close it.
      - Reopen Messenger and test the microphone again⁵.
      6. Restart Your iPad:
      - Sometimes a simple restart can resolve minor glitches. Turn off your iPad and then turn it back on.
      7. Contact Facebook Support:
      - If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Facebook Support for further assistance⁵.
Give these steps a try, and hopefully, your microphone will work as expected.

I understand that you're experiencing issues with your iPad's microphone. Let's troubleshoot this together! Here are some steps you can try:
      1. Remove Obstructions:
      - Ensure that there are no screen protectors, films, or cases covering the microphone openings on your iPad.
      - Make sure your hands or any other objects are not blocking the microphones.
      2. Test the Microphones:
      - Open the Camera app.
      - To test the front microphone, record a video of yourself speaking while facing the front camera.
      - To test the back microphone, switch to the back camera and record another video.
      - Play back both videos to check if your voice sounds clear.
      3. Check App Permissions:
      - Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
      - Make sure the app you're using (e.g., Messages) has permission to access the microphone.
      - If the app isn't listed or still doesn't work, consider contacting the app developer.
      4. Restart Your Device:
      - Sometimes a simple restart can resolve microphone issues. Try restarting your iPad.
      5. Software Updates:
      - Ensure your iPad is running the latest iOS version. If not, update it.
      - If the problem persists, consider resetting all settings or contacting Apple Support.
Remember, FaceTime availability varies by region. If you continue to experience unclear sound during calls or recordings, reach out to local Support for assistance.

So my iPad 2021 microphone stopped working. It recorded but it sounded like it was under water miles away. I thought it was clogged. It is a tiny hole at the top of the device in portrait mode. I used an electric toothbrush and lo and behold it "fixed it". Only for it to go muffled again within an hour. Mind you i use a cover and my hands do not touch the hole, but I do use it in landscape playing games. So i cleaned it again and now just to be sure, i placed a bit of paper on top of the hole to stop debris going in. The mic was still working with the paper on and then the case on top. But after an hour of use, it stopped again. So i decided to leave it because i started getting suspicious. Next day the microphone was working great without me cleaning it. So the problem is not with debris but with the component. I suspect that if you hold it in landscape, your hand heats it up and it stops working. "Cleaning " really just cools it down. This is the second ipad that has this problem as apple switched my first one. So try to see if it works when the iPad is cold. Not sure what can be done about it. Apple should sort it out. It is badly implemented. Basically you can't hold the device in landscape for more than a few minutes.

      - Make sure that the toggle for the app you're experiencing issues with is enabled.
      2. Clean the Microphone:
      - Use a soft brush or cotton swab to gently clean the microphone opening.
      3. Restart Your iPad:
      - Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears, then slide to turn off your iPad. Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
      4. Update iOS:
      - Make sure your iPad is running the latest iOS version. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for updates.
      5. Contact Apple Support:
      - If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Apple Support for expert assistance.
Remember to test the microphone after each step to see if the problem is resolved.

Clean The Microphone and Speaker holes on the iPad
If you find that one of your iPad’s microphones sounds muffled after you test it or it has no sound at all, let’s clean them. My favorite way to clean iPad microphones is by using a dry, un-used toothbrush to clean the microphone grill at the bottom of your iPad and the small black dot microphone to the right of the rear-facing camera. Simply slide the toothbrush over the microphones to dislodge any stuck pocket lint, dirt, and dust.
To turn up the volume of an iPad microphone, you should: Click Start→Control Panel→Sounds and Audio Devices. Open the Control Panel→click Sounds, Voices and Audio Devices→click on Sounds and Audio Devices
How do I turn my microphone on my iPad?
You can enable the microphone access by tapping "ALLOW". You can also go to the app properties on your device, and enable microphone access there: Settings → Apps → Yousician → Permissions → Microphone.
Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and navigate to Accessibility > Audio/Visual. Switch off Noise Cancellation toggle. Have a call with a friend and make sure the microphone is functioning properly. If it's still malfunctioning then re-enable the feature and move to the next trick.
Solutions for iPhone or iPad Microphone Not Working
      1. Unplug all accessories and disconnect all Bluetooth headphones, such as your charging line and Airpods.
      2. When holding the device or recording video, do not block the microphone with your fingers or protective case.
      3. Remove all debris and clean the microphone or iPhone handset.
      4. Restart or reboot the iPhone or iPad.

      Have a look at this:
What happened to the sound on my iPad?
Go to Settings > Sounds (or Settings > Sounds & Haptics), and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider back and forth a few times. If you don't hear any sound, or if your speaker button on the Ringer and Alerts slider is dimmed, your speaker might need service. Contact Apple Support for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

If the microphones on your **iPad** aren't working as expected, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
      1. **Remove Obstructions**:
      - **Clear the microphones**: Remove any screen protectors, films, or cases from your iPad.
      - **Clean the openings**: Ensure there's no debris blocking the microphone openings.
      2. **Test the Microphones**:
      - Open the **Camera app**.
      - To test the **front microphone**, record a video of yourself speaking while facing the camera on the front of your iPad.
      - To test the **back microphone**, tap the camera chooser to switch to the back camera. Then record another video of yourself speaking while facing the camera on the back of your iPad.
      - Play back both videos. You should hear your voice clearly in each.
      3. **Check App Permissions**:
      - Go to **Settings > Privacy > Microphone**.
      - Make sure that the app you're using has permission to access your microphone. If it isn't listed, contact the app developer.

If the microphone on your iPad is not working, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to try and resolve the issue. Here's a guide to help you:
      Check for Physical Obstructions:
Ensure that there is no debris or physical obstruction around the microphone area. Gently clean the microphone opening with a small, soft brush or compressed air.
      Remove Accessories:
If you are using a case or any accessories that cover the microphone area, remove them and test the microphone again. Some cases or screen protectors might interfere with the microphone's functionality.
      Restart Your iPad:
Restarting your iPad can often resolve minor software glitches. Turn off your iPad, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
      Check App Settings:
If the issue is specific to certain apps, check the app's settings to ensure that the microphone is not muted or disabled. Go to the app settings and look for any options related to microphone usage.
      Update iOS:
Ensure that your iPad is running the latest version of iOS. Software updates may include bug fixes that could address microphone issues. Go to "Settings" > "General" > "Software Update" to check for and install updates.
      Reset Settings:
If the problem persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPad. This won't delete your data but will reset system settings. Go to "Settings" > "General" > "Reset" > "Reset All Settings."
      Check Microphone in Voice Memos:
Open the Voice Memos app and attempt to record something. If the recording is successful, it indicates that the microphone hardware is functional, and the issue may be app-specific or related to settings.
      Test in Different Apps:
Try using the microphone in different apps (e.g., FaceTime, Camera, or a third-party recording app) to determine if the problem is app-specific. If the microphone works in one app but not in another, the issue may be related to the individual app.

If the microphone works in one app but not in another, the issue may be related to the individual app.

this seems like super crap advice .. stick a pointy thing in there and blow it out with your mouth like an old school nintendo cartridge? wtf. . you know that blowing things out with your breath just puts moisture in there and dmaages it more, don't you?
and then you "show" people how to restart the ipad, but not really. you did it so quick, nobody would know what you even did there.
and then you show people how to turn off bluetooth by opening the settings app and going in there, but there's amquicker way, jus swipe diagonal from the upper right corner and it show a little me u of sorts with airplane mode, volume controls, wifi, and bluetooth symbols and then just tap the bluetooth sybol to turn it off

If the microphones on your **iPad** aren't working as expected, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
      1. **Clear the microphones**:
      - Remove any screen protectors, films, or cases from your iPad.
      - Clear any debris from the microphone openings.
      - To test the microphones, open the **Camera app**:
      - Record a video of yourself speaking while facing the front camera to test the **front microphone**.
      - Switch to the back camera and record another video to test the **back microphone**.
      - Play back both videos to ensure your voice sounds clear in each¹.
      2. **Check app permissions**:
      - Go to **Settings > Privacy > Microphone**.
      - Make sure the app you're using has permission to access the microphone.
      - If the app isn't listed or still doesn't work, contact the app developer¹.
      3. **Restart your iPad**:
      - Press and hold the **Sleep/Wake button** until the red slider appears, then slide to turn off your iPad.
      - Wait a few seconds, then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again to turn it back on².
      4. **Disconnect Bluetooth devices**:
      - Sometimes Bluetooth devices can interfere with the microphone. Disconnect any connected Bluetooth accessories and check if the issue persists³.
      5. **Clean the microphones' grills**:
      - Use a soft cloth to wipe down the microphone area on your iPad.
      - Ensure there's no dirt or debris blocking the microphones³.
      6. **Update your iPad**:
      - Make sure your iPad is running the latest software updates. Sometimes system updates can resolve hardware-related issues³.
      7. **Reset All Settings** (as a last resort):
      - Go to **Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings**.
      - Note that this will reset all settings on your iPad, so proceed with caution.

@@sixbux yes, i kmow all these. i was referring to the early part of the vid when the guy says to put a pointy thing in it and blow it out with you breath.
also, that's just the same generic troubleshooting advice you see everywhere and troubleshooting almost never works in my experience.
fortunately, this time it was just a dirty contact that needed to be cleaned
