The uniform colors are red for ship command, yellow for all ship services (operations, maintenance, security) and blue for all department specialists/sciences. The idea is that people in the blue shirts have only very specialized knowledge, yellow shirts have ship specialties but are also extremely well versed in general operations and procedures throughout the ship, and command is those trained specifically to be in charge of situations.
It's the exact same principle as different coloured hard cats on construction sites. I don't know if this is universal, but where I am it's yellow hats for labourers/operators, white hats for supervisors, and blue hats for support/managerial/staff (inspectors, safety people, bookkeepers like me, etc.). Lets everyone know at a glance, even strangers, who does what.
@@wjzav1971 in all practicality they wanted to use primary colors and thus only had three to work with. They didn't want to use browns and greens because they clashed with the TNG universe colors.
@ well greens and browns were made things seem older. Earth tones where the exact opposite to the sleek bright high technology feel that they projected in the 1980s-1990s. It wasn’t until DS9 that they shifted color pallets to use oranges, yellows, greens and browns. Then later on in the voyager/generations/first contact era the pallet shifted again to incorporate more blues, grays, and purple like tones. It all comes an image of what at the current time we think is futuristic. And that idea actually changes. If I now look at the TNG color spectrum outside the context of the show it reads unimaginative old corporate office. But I remember when it first aired thinking it was wildly futuristic looking.
One interesting point that came out for me from this episode is that Data almost *never* wears anything except for his uniform. The only exceptions are where he needs to kinda blend into a more primitive society (like the one in San Francisco or the episode where he loses his memory) or when Lore knocks him out to get his uniform (which happened twice).
Oh, and while Data is young, he's been in Starfleet for about twelve years longer than Riker! But given where Data is in his emotional development, you'd have to really wonder what he was like in the Academy or earlier postings. HIs record full of awards in "The Measure of a Man" suggests that he was pretty damn amazing, but they never mention it.
They show the night shift a few times in Voyager where Harry Kim would be acting captain. It kind of highlights why it's not compelling, cause not a lot happens in the night shift. Although, seeing Data as acting captain is great so I'd love to see him in the night shift even if it'd be mundane.
I can say from experience that being polite and funny to woman, as a man, can also be misconstrued as flirting. In fact, thats how i met my ex-wife. She asked me out because i was being too friendly (and yes I cook for my friends all the time lol)
I'm a guy so might not be worth much but I definitely think you should apologize for harm caused during a period. Saying it's a bodily function doesn't really work in other situations... ie. Guys get horny. That's due to hormones and bodily functions. How well would it go over for a guy to say they shouldn't have to pay any consequences (let alone having to say sorry) for raping someone... "hey it's just my hormones telling me what to do". Yes rape is obviously much worse but it's the same principle. You have a hormone caused feeling that leads to an action that harms someone. Can argue in both cases you could redirect that feeling toward something else as well. But if you don't, there has to be at least some consequences (.i.e. needing to say sorry)
He wasn’t even listening he was recording. He has no concept of thinking this is important or I care about this subject or person I want to give them my full attention. He read a self help book what women want and just started checking off the list.
I would guess engineering and security are "operations". Command is kind like upper management. science would be the individual projects /special departments.
1:23:15 Ricardo your step-dad is awesome. For Sara; it's a complicated answer. For some, it's exactly what marvin said, environmental factors and upbringing force a man to not share feelings. Some men don't make themselves emotionally available because they've been victimized. people who've used their emotions and vulnerability as a weapon against them. Summon, we're victims of abuse, and uh, the only way to deal with that trauma was to compartmentalize their emotions and bury it.And in turn, they bury all of their emotions, because it all links back to that trauma. Then you have the play captain picard handles things in this show. He doesn't tell his subordinates anything about his feelings or emotions because he doesn't want to look weak. And then there are some men like Ricardo's dad who are very out there and people don't know how to handle it. Just think of the ending of the lord of the rings, everyone wants to ship the hobbits, because they're emotionally expressing themselves through word and touch. Part of the fantasy is that min could share emotion and share touch in a platonic way because it was not something that was culturally acceptable to do otherwise. So yeah it's complicated.
Speaking as an Tucson 4 or an L.A. 2, I appreciated the brief moments where I was seen as kind, supportive and deep and not just an ugly MFr that's dependable. Knowingly and openly having a rebound fling actually does wonders for young men learning to set higher standards for themselves.
"I'll delete this program" ... isn't that what we do when we burn an ex (or other bad thing /trauma) out of our memory with drinking binges? Meat brains just don't have an easy drag and drop recycling bin 😅🙃
I'm an open book, too (go team!) and I don't think it's fair for people who fancy you to say that you're leading them on just because you're talking to them openly, that's their entitlement speaking. I'm sorry you've lost friendships over this, Sarah.
All of you expressed surprise that nobody raised any concerns about Data pursuing a relationship (aside from Diana's caution, which wasn't about the android thing), but it does fit the crew dynamic perfectly. There have been challenges to Data's personhood over the course of the series, but every single character that has done that in the past isn't on the ship anymore. Dr. Palanski was the crew member who embodied that position (which was a clear harkening back to Dr McCoy's antagonism of Spock), and when she left, nobody took on that role on the ship. Everyone else who has seen Data as anything other than a person has been some Starfleet jerk off that isn't on the Enterprise. Maybe if Wesley was still around he would have made a snot-nosed argument about it, because he was always raising racist arguments whenever the writers wanted to shoot them down, but otherwise everyone's on Team Data. So, rather than it being a situation where everyone is bizarrely okay with a human dating a robot, they all see it as their beloved friend Data taking a step in his quest to become more human, and with someone that seems to know him, appreciate him, and care for him. Why wouldn't they all give their blessing? It would be out of character if anyone in the crew DID raise human/android concerns, at this point.
Yeah, I hate that writer's comment on "You always wonder what the Enterprise is up to in the meantime." Like, fuck no, I don't. I can accept that the Enterprise is doing nothing for a change, maybe some boring uneventful sciency stuff, maybe patrolling a quiet border or maybe the crew is relaxing because Starfleet currently has no assignements. That B-Plot should have been cut.
@@jakehodgson82 A Spock serves as an outsider/other perspective compared to the rest of their respective crews. Tuvok's is too deeply entrenched in the federation culture to serve as the Spock. Tuvok is an Riker.
I disagree about men being more stoic in actuality, and we have the same hormones but at different levels between not only the sexes but also between individuals (many women have high testosterone, men can struggle with low testosterone and high oestrogen etc.) Emotional outbursts due to hormones are simply because there's a sudden change, it doesn't matter which ones are going up or down, it's due to your "normal" balance being disrupted. Men go through hormone cycles, too and loads of things (ageing, stress, sleep) affect our hormone levels.

Pedro Pascal is like Sam Worthington with Talent. All of the sudden out of nowhere he's in almost everything. Like I said though, he has talent.
Sarah’s right it’s a completely different cat
They also change Spot's gender a couple of times too if I remember. I think it's always a different cat because Data sucks at keeping pets alive.
