I just bought a really nice upgraded PTR91 from a buddy who works at the local gun shop and he threw in 500 rounds of match ammo. It has the Magpul PRS sniper stock like the PSG1 and it's a great stock. They run between $225 to like $260 for the PRS and if you can afford it I highly recommend it. I put on a Vortex Strikefire 2 red dot and it's really nice. To answer your question about the mags, PTR wanted to make it easy and cheap to get mags so they kept the original G3 mags because they are cheap and easy to find. They do make polymer mags for them but I haven't seen them in person. The PTR91/G3/HK91 was meant to be a battle rifle. They are built heavy and tough so you can slap them around and they will stand up to it a lot better than an AR. Get to know the rifle and I guarantee you'll love it! Also, if you look on the mags most, if not all of them will say G3 H&K. That's because they are all basically surplus mags from old G3 rifles and some you might find on the market were even used in combat. Though they were made as battle rifles they are capable of making long distance shots. I've seen videos of people making 800 yard shots with them with the right optics. Rest assured you bought a great quality firearm that was made in the USA with H&K tooling and made to H&K specs.
When you have the bolt locked to the rear use the palm of your hand ( Not fingers) to deliver a sharp downward slap, don't be easy with it slap it, to the bolt release. The idea is to hit it quick and hard so the force of the spring can chamber the first round without being slowed down (weakened) by prolonged contact with your hand. Have fun, it's an enjoyable rifle to shoot.
I just push the charging handle off its rest with thumb and let the recoil spring do the rest. Polenar Tactical dos a video on this same topic No hk slap for me and its faster to get to gun back in action without it.
@@Odinforever2000 +1 Agreed. There are some present and former military members who have experience with using this rifle that will even go so far as to say they were taught NOT to "slap" it the way most people do.
Very good rifle. I have the PTR 93 ( Made in South Carolina I think) Its chambered in 7.26x39. Steel case Russian inexpensive round. It shoots very well, Have put about 500 rounds thru it and very reliable. Learn to take it down roller lock system is tricky. But one of the best , most reliable locking system designed. Great buy Demcad. Cant wait to see you take it to the range. This rifle is used by Military all over the world Again great buy.
All .308 battle rifles are heavy. They have to be to handle the .308 rd.. When ruger came out with the mini 14 they weren’t planning on it being a 5.56. They were planning to make it a .308. They found out it couldn’t handle it. That’s why it is a5.56. They called it a mini 14 because it looked like a .308 M14. Just a little trivia there.
They're good guns. I decided to start collecting and shooting M14, instead of HK clones. It definitely gets expensive. The good news is that you can buy the HK Clone mags for less than $10.
Love your channel and what you do man! Always entertaining as well as informational, Nice rifle! Still cant believe, i been watching you for a decade man its surreal lol
I bought one of the Century C308's back in 2008-2009. The quality was ok, what I loved was the aluminum magazines were only 99 cents a piece and the 7.62×51mm (308 cal) surplus ammo was so plentiful. Now I'm more into the FALs, easier to build from parts kits at home, with simple tools.
Nice . My son had the Springfield one . But he sold it after reading that "some" people were getting cracked receivers . They were cast pot steel I think , and made in South America somewhere I believe . I think that PTR is a good one though . Hope HARRIS / joey allow you to keep it ! ... Stay safe .. Gubs
Nice pull bro! I look forward to watching you handle that big boi recoil. Pro tip: Iron sights are your friend with this gun. If you want to mount a scope, get one with good eye relief unless you want cracked glasses.
Congrats Demcad! Headspace with a delayed roller blowback action is NOT quite as critical as with other platforms. Your PTR-91 will eat ANY ammo, steel case etc. Spare parts are cheap and abundant so are mags as You pointed out. You can find collapsing stocks cheaper than 300 bucks trust me. allow me to suggest You lay in some spare parts mainly extractors (especially if ya shoot steel case ammo) firing pins, bolt parts etc.
You may or may not end up liking the collapsible stocks, people tend to either love or hate them (I love them) and yes, the prices are higher than they were 10 years ago for those. Be aware that using an optic on that rail (if you put one on there) is probably going to require some sort of cheek riser to get a normal "cheekweld" that we are all used to...and if you put some kind of makeshift cheekriser on the G3 collapsible stock, you're not going to be able to "collapse" it anymore, which would kind of negate the point of using the collapsible stock in the first place. Just something to think about :)
I bought my PTR back in 2017,bought on a impulse buy,was working with the Saudi National guard and kinda liked it,so bought one, good 7.62 rifle,it’s a battle rifle.will keep heads down in the city if you light a few off, worse case scenario...
Please watch a video on how to use that gun. Watching you jam that magazine in was rough. Also lookup "the HK slap". That's the reason you want one of these! Also forget that button for the mag release. Paddle release all the way. Those two unique features, in my opinion, is what makes HKs so much fun.
the issue with these rifles is that if you put a red dot on them the front sight post is all up in your field of view - so you zero it and then you cant get a good cheek weld without the red dot being somewhere on the front sight post- and you have to mount the dot so high to avoid it that you're basically going to a chin weld on the stock...the same thing if you put a scope on it- you almost have to get a stock with an adjustable cheek riser..but they're dead nuts reliable, and the mags are cheap...if you can find the hk forgrip it's much better than the thin round one that comes on the ptr-- does require some fitting though..
The chamber gets filthy, since it uses a series of flutes to assist with primary extraction via bleeding a bit of gas against the case, however, these rifles DO work well and rarely break anything. Just grease the rollers well and you'll probably never had any issues.
Go to RobertRTGdotcom for parts. They used to have a "survival pack," of sorts for the G3 pattern rifles, which gets you a host of extra parts, pins and springs. Good luck.
Watch out when you charge the rifle you don’t place your finger on the trigger. I’ve done that and shot the ceiling. Luckily, I was at a gun range and not at the apartment.
I just bought a PTR 91 for all of reasons stated. Love the look of FAL and they have great reviews but the initial investment isn’t cheap. Mags are so cheap for the G3. Feels like AK’s back in 2010 lol.
Don't worry about head space. You will never put enough rounds thru it to worry about that. I have had my PTR93 for 5 years. It eats every round I put thru it. Cheap Russian steel case is the best. Invest in a front sight tool. Once you zero it. Your good for life.
I like how they eject the spent rounds into the next county. Lol. The only down side is that you can't reload because it destroys the brass. Congratulations on the new rifle!
Congratulations! I got a PTR100 GI last spring and it is without a doubt my favorite rifle of all time. (For parts, check out robertrtg. Do not under any circumstances deal with HKparts. The owner's FFL was revoked and the site tried to put fraudulent charges on my credit card. Fortunately, my credit union caught it.)
I have heard of people hurting their hands charging the weapon with an overhand grip, better to use an underhand grip, more strength and better fluidity of motion. I highly suggest an extended charging handle, and an aluminum fore-end. (The plastic one traps heat.) Hkparts.net, but try robertrtg.com first as it has far better prices. Test the boltgap before firing, after the break-in for sure, but look at the tolerances and how close you are. Ptr 91's should have a lot of life in them, not like the c308 that uses a bunch of worn out parts.(I have a c308 by the way, had to change out a bunch of worn out stuff.) You will need to watch a video on how to check the bolt gap to do it right. While you are at it, watch a video on how to disassemble the rifle. Most of it is easy, but the bolt gives people a bit of trouble cause of that 50 lbs spring it has.
Hey buddy i just picked up a PTR GI and i had the dirt in the mag and all over the gun as well, bad thing was it was mixed in with heavy oil inside that bag, took me quite awhile to get the rifle clean of that oily grit. Also, isn't that the rifle that requires you to rock the magazine in, instead of just sliding it straight in?
This rifle actually is somewhat forgiving in that respect.
