IM CRYING OVER THIS, I FORGET not EVERYONE IS INTO CRINGY NERD INTERNET CULTURE THINGS, SO SEEING PEOPLE NOT FROM THOSE SIDE OF THE INTERNET INTERACT AND REACT TO THIS IN PURE HORROR IS THE FUNNIEST THING KNOWN TO MAN (I promise not all Miku things are like this, vocaloid can sometimes have darker undertones but usually there wholesome)
To explain: in Japan, there's a word for girls that love boy on boy fiction (yaoi). Those girls are called fujoshis, which translates to 'Rotten Girl'. In this song, Hatsune Miku plays a character that is a Christian fujoshi abd constantly apologizes to God for being a fujoshi while still indulging in yaoi. As you can tell, there's a huge audience for fujoshis, as yaoi is extremely popular. To explain hatsune miku, she is a voice bank made (consensually) from another singer's voice, and she basically acts as an instrument. Despite what some might say, she is NOT an AI and is a very valid form of music. There's also other voice banks like her which you might recognize under the names of utauloids and vocaloids, but most people just group them under the vocaloid umbrella. The boys shown in the mv are also other vocaloids if I recall correctly. Also, good luck returning to a normal life, because Hatsune Miku got her grips in me 10 years ago and never let go
To add on to what you're saying for further explanation of why I think this song is so popular, is that the term Fujoshi started as an insult. Historically there have been few places for women to explore and express their sexuality and when they do it's often frowned upon. But with the rise of the internet and even zine/comic/manga culture before that yaoi shippers carved out a space for themselves even as they faced backlash. The song as a whole has a sort of celebratory feeling of sexuality despite the aspects of christian guilt.
5:26 The reason it kinda sounds kinda like classical music is because its made with the Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Opus 13 ("Pathétique"), 3rd Movement, Rondo: Allegro (made by beethoven) as a "main theme". basically all the music layout for this is based of that (idk if i word it right, i dont speak english well)
4:03 "Is this a song for girl gooners?" XDDD You're not...wrong necessarily. The content may not be for you, but I'm glad you were interested in breaking it down and learning what it was about! The songs made from Vocaloid (the type of instrument Hatsune Miku is) are typically very story-driven and interesting. Would definitely recommend checking more out! A lot of them are in Japanese though, so be sure to find one with English subtitles. ^^
So if you aren’t aware, as far as I know, Hatsune Miku (pronounced Hat-sue-nay mii-ku) is a virtual idol girl hailing from Japan from a music creating program called Vocaloid. In Vocaloid you pretty much use people’s voices as instruments, laying down notes, typing out lyrics, and tuning to make them sound better. Hatsune Miku is one of the many characters to come from this program and she’s also one of the most popular characters to ever come from Japanese media. Songs created using her voice have reached hundreds of millions of views!
Finding out about THE Hatsune Miku from a yaoi song is crazy omg But I’m happy you aren’t judgemental, many people are when it comes to VOCALOID music. It’s very diverse and there’s something for everyone
LMAOOO you should react to more outlandish anime/vocaloid content!!! This video gave me a good laugh tbh, and it was also interesting to see your thoughts and interpretations!! Also you pretty much hit the nail on the head for "girl gooner to boy manga" lol
I appreciate that even though you have no clue what's going on and it 10000% isn't your demographic you aren't negatively judging the content and praising the beat. This song is so popular because it's a genuine love letter to fangirls and perfectly encapsulates everything that is early 2000s era fandom. And I should say this isn't representative to what all Vocaloid music is, every song is created by different artists and spans every genre.
You popped up in my recommendations, and I always forget that there are people who don't know about hatsune miku! Honestly, I like your honesty towards the video. You gave it a solid reaction, and I'm sorry that this was your first intro to hatsune miku XD
I love this. I'm really surprised you havent even heard of Hatsune Miku considering how much of a viral sensation she is (and has been for many years). I really just want you to react to his other song "Magical cure love shot" cuz im curious how different your reaction would be to it XD. That one won 1st place at Miku expo last year and is really good
the glasses with spirals are a retro anime/manga design trait to indicate "coke-bottle glasses," where the lenses are just very thick and the paddle is just kind of an icon of western anime fan humor from the 00s, there's even a whole wikipedia page for it if you search "yaoi paddle" lol
This song is so deeply campy and drenched into female nerd culture I don’t blame you for not understanding what’s happening lol. If I can provide some insight on specifics: -The paddle thing was a trend at conventions in the 2000’s where girls bought paddles that said “yaoi” and would carry them and take photos with cosplayers with them. But some people got injured from Non-consensual paddling and they eventually got banned from cons lol -this is maybe less common nowadays (I wouldn’t know) but in BL (fujoshi) spaces a lot of girls use the phrase “sin” and “im a sinner!” which I’m not sure is self deprecating or homophobic. I think a little bit of both? But it’s probably mostly self-deprecating…which is where a lot of that kinda stuff in the song comes from. -the origins of the word “fujoshi” (literally “rotten girl”) are quite misogynistic and homophobic in their roots anyway (essentially was a term started by forum users calling these women unfit for marriage. It’s like the nerd equivalent of calling someone a whore). So it is a lot more of that self-deprecation culture that you noticed. I’m not gonna say that this song is a celebration of being a fujoshi…my personal interpretation is that it is just a campy, dramatic song about sexual exploration. There are a lot of issues with the culture, like objectification/fetishisation, but im sure you could already pick that up and that’s kind of to be expected of porn culture anyway. But I do think a lot of people resonate with it as a lot of girls are inexplicably drawn to boys love stuff 🤷🏼♀️ what the reason for this is im not really sure. But I think it’s a really fun song and so so catchy. Hilarious review! Thanks for sharing and giving it a listen :)
It's moreso about sexually repressed religious people's pent up desires tbh. Miku is a Christian I'm pretty sure, and also a known fujoshi for a while now. Also, almost every BL comment section I've seen to this day has comments like "We're all going to hell" and stuff, so that's that

Thank you for watching this. I'm glad to see people listening to vocaloid who may not know much or anything about it. This randomly popped up while I was listening to the song. Miku is basically a software/instrument and people use her voice to create music with it. There are producers behind the music and write the lyrics along with tuning the vocaloid. I would get why it's a bit confusing to those who don't know about it and I've seen most assume it's anime when it's not and you don't need to like or watch anime in order to listen to it. I am not into anime anymore and haven't watched it in years and still love vocaloid and Miku. Also, this song is based on BL, I am not into the stuff and don't get it but I am a sucker for any vocaloid music and I like this producer which is why I listened to this.
The fruit she's holding is a tomato, in reference to the old fanfiction term KINKTOMATO, which is a funny and easy to pronounce variant of YKINMKATOK (your kink is not my kink and thats okay.) The lemons are also a reference to explicit fanfic culture, being an old term for fanfic of an explicit nature, typically male/male
you popped onto my reccomendation. It's super interesting to see someone be introdcued to hatsune miku as THIS SONG. This is a huge step from miku's ordnary aesthetic. Most the comments covered her stuff. I reccomend look at her other songs too since its not just degeneracy. This song is about a Fujoshi("Rotten Girl"), which is a japanese term used to discribe one who enjoys BL or sometimes GL media. Whats the appeal? Asside from queer and LGBTQ+ Identities, there are a lot of themes from Yaoi and Yuri novels that some feel are missing from heterosexual romantic stories. Some of it is straight up nsfw content, some of it a simple romance story. Not everyone can indulge and enjoy 50 shades of grey. The style of writting and the manga/manwa approach may be more appealing to some audiences. (50 sahdes was the only example i could think iof correct me if there is a better comparison) Like genres of literacy, there are many genres of Yaoi/yuri. It is some what addictive. Not to everyone, some get exctied over a genre of fantasy stories while others scifi. Some are just as simple as "I just enjoy reading BL stories" I am no expert but i hope this helps! Correct me on any terms I may have forgotten or wrote wrong Written by a low key Rotten girl who casually enojys BL/GL time to time
i first heard this from a small animation meme. At that time, i didn't know or hear the full song. The reason that made me look into it was because of the beat it was dropping. It was so good i wanted to know where it was from.
Hell of an introduction to Vocaloid huh, if you're interested in listening to more Vocaloid songs then two popular ones I would recommend are "Mesmerizer" (by Satsuki) and "Lagtrain" (by INABAKUMORI), a slightly more obscure pick that I think might interest you is "Skip the fomalities" (by beat_shobon)
As someone who is VERY familiar with the multiple references in this song, I am here to shed some light! You may be familiar with the beat of this song, it’s actually sampling one of Beethoven’s pieces! It’s sampling Beethoven Virus. As others mentioned, Hatsune Miku(the one singing and the girl portrayed in this song) is not a real person. She’sa vocals artist! Her voice is sampled(?) from a person tho. She is a very popular and has her own concerts, I recommend checking out some videos of her concerts! They’re fun. And as you noticed, “rotten girl” is fujoshi, which is a girl who likes to read and watch fictional/anime boyxboy media. And the song is portraying Hatsune’s religious guilt for indulging in it. In the end she accepts herself for who she is. A schoolgirl who is a goonette. The “swirly” eye glasses she had is meant to portray how she’s a nerd. It’s a popular way to portray nerds in anime. At 5:20 where it says “lemon driven bite” that’s a reference to a popular phrase back in the 2010s that’s meant to reference how the word “lemon” was meant to describe a fanfic with explicit content in it. Typically boyxboy fanfics One thing I wanted to point out, at the 4:30 mark in your video, where it shows Hatsune sitting at the school chair, this is actually a reference to a Japanese game called Danganronpa! The reference is portraying where the main character was (wrongfully) accused of killing his classmate, and this was his “execution”. And you’ll see during this sequence, on the chalkboard it says “Omegaverse”, which is another reference to a genre of boyxboy(yaoi). I don’t recommend looking it up lol Also where it says “slow burn galore” at 5:47, that is a genre of romance in fanfics, but also in media in general. It’s basically where the couple in a story takes more than 50% of the book to actually start dating. It’s a slow burn. this is a lot but these are most of the references I saw in this video!
It's kinda hard to explain miku and vocaloid in general😅 Miku is one of the most popular vocaloids to date. As other comments have explained. Miku is basically an instrument, but instead of making notes, it makes sounds (voice). Miku was released since 2007 and is still relevant in pop culture. Many people use miku's voice for their songs, and one of them is Sawtone. I was wondering if you would do another reaction video about miku or other vocaloids, I would like to give you some recommendations. Of course if you are interested in this😃
4:40 ‘suggestive angle’ at a danganronpa reference. I dont know if thats the most accurate thing ever (im looking at *you* mikan) or whether i should cry because that was originally someone being killed (or attempted to be killed or wtv ykwim)
HELP NOT THIS SONG BEING YOUR INTRODUCTION TO HATSUNE MIKU So basically miku is a vocaloid in more simple terms shes a digital instrument she has over a 100,000 songs and pretty much anybody can use her voice bank (her voice bank is the instrument) miku is just a mascot for said voice bank! You should definitely check out more songs with Miku in it I promise they aren't all crazy like this lol
I KNEW IT'S GOING TO BE CURSED AND considering this is your first time hearing hatsune miku (a voice bank) it'S EVEN MORE CURSED. bless yoUR SOUL! edit: there's a whole video out there to explain what's happening: ruclips.net/video/XswBvQHxA1Q/видео.html
"this is very classically-driven melody here, I don't know where it's from" Beethoven somewhere: 👀 I was gonna help explain stuff but a lot of people already did their part, so that's great everyone.
Okay to summarize what you just watched: The vocalist for this song, Hatsune Miku, is a voice bank for a vocal synthesizer called Vocaloid. The other characters in this music video are based on other voice banks, mostly belonging to Vocaloid! Think of this as using something like MuseScore or Synthesia but with vocals instead of instruments, and the voices have names and faces. The song is from the perspective of a girl who is into BL (Boy's Love) content, especially the 18+ stuff. It's also often referred to as yaoi (there's a difference in these terms but that's not for this comment). All that while being from a Christian (presumably Catholic) background. This song is her belief and environment clashing with her hobby and the natural feelings that come with being a hormonal teenager, and she feels guilty for it as a result. The girl in the song is designed after Hatsune Miku, and while it's not confirmed whether that's meant to be literally Miku or just a girl who looks like her, you'll see me referring to the rotten girl as Miku. Another thing: the hypnotized eyes you were referring to are just her glasses. It's a common anime trope to draw these swirly opaque glasses, especially for nerdy and weirdo characters. So it's on theme! You'll notice that her regular eyes also have swirls in them, which often signals obsession/infatuation ect. Again, fitting! A lot of the references in this song refer to BL and the culture surrounding it, and there's too many to count, but some highlights: *Rotten Girl is a direct translation of the term "fujoshi" an originally degrading term for girls and women into BL, that has been embraced and reclaimed by said fans in more recent years. *The song and visuals have many references to fanfiction, including visual references to the site AO3, there's a reference to "slow burn", which is a tag used for stories where the characters take a long time to get together and the story centers on the journey there, and the usage of a lemon as Eve's forbidden fruit is in reference to the citrus system, which was an old method of categorizing the amount of sexual content in fanfiction, with lemon featuring explicit sex scenes. *There's also a lot of references related to anime in this video. The sleepy blond boy with the guitar and the pink haired guy are a reference to a BL series called Given. The notebook she's holding in the visual before the 2nd chorus, the "yaoi note" is a reference to Death Note, a very famous anime that had a big community of people shipping (romantically pairing) the two main characters. The scene where Miku is suddenly a low-poly 3D model tied to a chair and being lectured while heading towards a hydraulic press is a reference to the popular game franchise Danganronpa. Plentiful gay fan pairings aside, this visual is specifically a reference to a character being "executed" in the game. Read into that as you will. *The paddle she's holding that says "sinner" is a reference to the yaoi paddle, a usually wooden paddle with the word "yaoi" engraved on it, that was often carried by fujoshi in anime conventions. They'd use it to smack other people's butts, often people in costumes of characters they saw as gay. After it collectively dawned on people that this is just assault if the person didn't consent to it, yaoi paddles have been banned from pretty much all conventions, and are a relic of late 00's early 10's anime and convention culture. *The classical melody you were referring to is actually Beethoven, as the song uses the same leitmotif as Sonata no.8 Pathetique 3rd Movement. There's plenty I missed, but the tl;dr is that this song is a love letter to all the weirdos of the anime community who may have felt guilty or ashamed for what they enjoy watching and reading in their spare time. It's an incredible song and regardless of your opinion on the subject matter, you can't deny the sheer amount of work and effort that went into the song and its visuals, all done by an incredibly small group, mostly by Sawtowne themselves. I do recommend trying out other Miku songs though, as many artists use her voice in so many diverse ways. Most of her songs are in Japanese though. Some recommendations are World is Mine by Ryo, Rolling Girl by Wowaka, Shoujo Rei by MikitoP, and Karakuri Pierrot by 40mP
hatsune miku is a vocaloid, which is like a digital instrument where you can make singing (or talking) from pre-recorded voice samples. the miku you see is a mascot for her vocaloid software, though she became popular as her own character

Typically boyxboy fanfics
One thing I wanted to point out, at the 4:30 mark in your video, where it shows Hatsune sitting at the school chair, this is actually a reference to a Japanese game called Danganronpa! The reference is portraying where the main character was (wrongfully) accused of killing his classmate, and this was his “execution”. And you’ll see during this sequence, on the chalkboard it says “Omegaverse”, which is another reference to a genre of boyxboy(yaoi). I don’t recommend looking it up lol
Also where it says “slow burn galore” at 5:47, that is a genre of romance in fanfics, but also in media in general. It’s basically where the couple in a story takes more than 50% of the book to actually start dating. It’s a slow burn.
this is a lot but these are most of the references I saw in this video!
It's kinda hard to explain miku and vocaloid in general😅
Miku is one of the most popular vocaloids to date.

Omg this cannot be the first Miku song you've ever listened to 😭
Okay to summarize what you just watched:
The vocalist for this song, Hatsune Miku, is a voice bank for a vocal synthesizer called Vocaloid.
A lot of the references in this song refer to BL and the culture surrounding it, and there's too many to count, but some highlights:
*Rotten Girl is a direct translation of the term "fujoshi" an originally degrading term for girls and women into BL, that has been embraced and reclaimed by said fans in more recent years.
5:29 its mostly virus by Beethoven.

what is hatsune miku even about
hatsune miku is a vocaloid, which is like a digital instrument where you can make singing (or talking) from pre-recorded voice samples. the miku you see is a mascot for her vocaloid software, though she became popular as her own character
