Thanks, Linda. It's very true that expectations force us into boxes and delineate when, where, and how we allow ourselves to experience contentment. And it's also true that sometimes we internalize those expectations so deeply that we don't even know we have them. My story: I was the first person in my family to graduate from college, and I created this narrative that my family-especially my parents-expected me to achieve far greater success (i.e., money) than I've been able to so far. I've depended on their support throughout my education and until recently, when I moved back home after working in Thailand for some time and was searching for a new job. I just got an offer this morning (!!), but my parents were never concerned or impatient or disappointed about how things were going for me. That was all a projection, I think, because it was easier or maybe more instinctual to believe that other people felt that way about me, when in fact I had those feelings about myself.

Thank you for reminding me about journalling again. Accountability is key and I will keep reviewing all of my activities at the end of the day.

Nice video. Your example of the daily dinner prep expectation hit home. There are so many little ones: working through lunch/break at my desk at work; watching TV with my husband when I have no interest in the program because I think it’s “couple time”, visiting my family at regular intervals, advising my adult kids even though they may not need/want my advice. This is an eye opener. Thanks.
