    Java fern is a low light, low nutrient plant that thrives in beginners tanks. As well as Java fern, Java moss is a great plant to provide cover on driftwood and rocks. Wood options include Malaysian, spider wood, manzanita wood, bogwood and a bunch of other kinds. Always do your research!

    For plants: Java fern and Anubias are both very easy to grow without adding anything to the water, and both will grow attached to driftwood or rocks. I would definitely add some hard structure like Mopani or Malaysian driftwood. I would also get some surface plant. The easiest of which is Duckweed.

    Chris. Crappie are way cleaner to have as a pet.
    No worms just minnows for feed. I did 3 from 3" to 14" in 12 months. They are very mean to each other to even killing one off to be tops in the tank. Minnows bill here high, set up a small holding treatment tank for the minnows before letting any in the big tank that lives more than a minute. Way more fun, fun as bass.

    You could go get some driftwood from a lake, pond, river, etc, and boil it to cure it and release some of the tannins in the wood, but it would still release some tannins into the water.

    I had the same setup, the spay bar got annoying, i replaced the airation with an air stone bubbler, use a filter sponge on it for extra filtration. Dont bother with too many plants would be my advice, try some driftwood with anubias or java moss attached. enjoy.

  • @sharleen1
    @sharleen1 7 лет назад +5

    You need a heater, wave pump, GOOD filter, a thermometer that’s fish tank friendly, I recommend sand over gravel cause that’s what I use for freshwater fish tank; places for the bluegill to hide and have privacy, driftwood, real plants for oxygen, and make sure you do monthly water changes, stress coat, bacteria supplement, dechlorinator, and a water test kit!

  • @TheCaptainbeefylog
    @TheCaptainbeefylog 7 лет назад

    If you put in driftwood add macropore or purigen to your filter media to remove any tannins that leach out. A tank that size could handle 3 or 4 more of those fish, so I would have gone with a few of the smaller ones you caught instead of one large one. Anubias are good aquatic plants but you can always use the good old elodea in bunches.

    petsmart has a nice selection of bulbs and i had a lot of succes with the lilly pad type ones. i have a little outdoors setup of 20 gallons and 2 medium size bluegills and it works great as a filtration and aeration system when you have pads in the water body. the bluegill also learn to recognize you fairly well and can go for weeks without food so they are a low stress pet. i've learnt that leaving lots of plants and even a little algae reduces their stress and keeps their slime coat nice and thick. bronze and bubbles are really thriving in my setup so bear grylls should do just fine

    Hi Chris! Awsome video as always. It does not really matter what type of plants etc you have in it, as long as he has somewhere to hide and feel safe (been doing aquarium for many years). A log with a cavity /cave-like structure is perfect, with some plants covering some of the entrance. Keep doing what you do! Love from Norway

    So there are 4 common types of sunfish that look like bluegill. One is the bluegill itself, which is the lighter colored one. One is a redbreast sunfish which has the orange or red belly. Another is the pumpkinseed which looks similar to a bluegill but has orangish dots along the sides of its body. And the last is a redear sunfish which has a red spot on its operculum or gill plate and these get larger than regular bluegill. But there are also bluegill localities that occur in different states that may look similar to any of the above or they may be very dark or light in color with varying bars and patterns.

    An interesting characteristic of male bluegill is its ability to mimic the coloration of the female. It does this when another male is spawning with a female. The female mimic will approach the female from the opposite side, and release milt to fertilize some of the eggs. By adopting the coloration of the female, it does not arouse alarm in the male.

    I like fishing bluegills because they put up quite the fight for a littler fish and the next time you travel with fish like that put some ice in the water with the fish. The colder the water the less oxygen they take in.

    The fish that swallowed the hook chances are it won't rust out. But good news, there was a study done with 27 blue gills. Out of the 27 only 3 died because of the hook being swallowed. Those 3 were already bleeding though before they were put in a tank. Out of the remaining 24, 17 of them expelled the hook themselves within 10 days. And the remaining 7 were still able to eat just didnt eat as much until they expelled the hooks some 2 weeks later.
