    If you are out on the sea how do you sprout the grains? Water goes bad when stored on voyages. This is why alcoholic drinks were essential on ships, to add to the water to prevent water spoilage. Did they use their precious water supply?

    Thanks for the free grain calculator. On a whim, I bought a Wondermill from a friend but need to get some grains. Ordered a few weeks ago from Azure and it will be at my drop here in NC next week. I've yet to grind anything but my order which has to be finalized by Tuesday, 19th (tomorrow) is so far 50# of hard red and 50# of soft white and 5# of rye (yep, only 5#). I would like to have at the very least a year's worth. I plan to make my own breads, about 6 small loaves a month but want to branch out to cakes, biscuits, pastries, etc. and also sourdough just for kicks so I'm sure my output will increase because I will using my friends and family as guinea pigs for my judges. I'm a widow so it's just me but want to be able to share if need be. You said ask you anything, I think that was you, so here goes. Since I'm a beginner miller and we may not be able to get supplies in the near future, what should I add to my Azure order? Should I double up on the hard red and soft white and add some soft red because I like the blend of the hard and soft that you talked about to get fluffier bread. Should I add some other grains so I will be able to experiment some because I am very afraid that supplies will dry up quickly and this week may be my only chance to stock up for a year and I will be limited to what I have in my pantry for quite a while. I know, long question, but I really need some help here. Thanks. I have just found you and I'm looking at every one of your videos as quick as I can.

    • @GrainsandGrit
      @GrainsandGrit  3 года назад +3

      Wow! Great questions and so glad to have you here. There are certain staples I would stock up on - wheat (at the very least, hard red wheat and soft white wheat), oil for making bread and cooking with, salt for preservation as well as for making things taste good, honey for the sugar or a combination of honey and cane sugar, dried beans, yeast, oats, rice, and whole corn.
      I also highly recommend stocking up on peanut butter WITH sugar in it for anyone with sugar issues (hypoglycemia, diabetes, etc). It’s a perfect food to help anyone who needs a boost of sugar without causing them to crash.
      I know it seems like a lot but those are basics that if I had a lot on hand I could feed a lot of people well for awhile if I had enough. Plus these things don’t require refrigeration.
      Bottom line: think about what you use the most and always keep a good supply of that.

    • @vonlucy
      @vonlucy 3 года назад +1

      @@GrainsandGrit Thanks for the quick response. Since I haven't actually milled my own flour yet, I'm afraid if I don't order big on the grains now that I may lose my chance to really stock up. I'll just have to use what I can get and make the most of it. I'm going to double my Azure order and that should give me enough wheatberries for a year, I think. I'm pretty good on the other things but do need to boost my supply of oil and yeast. Thanks for all your help.

      @@vonlucy No problem! And do know that I recently saw an email or a blog post from Azure stating that they have taken preparations in regards to supply chain issues. They have really made sure they themselves are stocked up in order to meet the demand from customers. I know in the article, they stated they are at max capacity in many of their storage buildings!
      Also, Azure are wheat farmers themselves. So in regards to the wheat there isn't a huge supply chain to worry about 😃

    So glad I found your channel! I think I’ve found my sister!! We are on the same wavelength. You have a lot more knowledge though. I’m excited to learn from you!! (I just added 25lbs of Rye to my next Azure haul since it’s so good for sourdough.)

      I'm new at milling, haven't actually even used my mill because I didn't have any wheatberries but I have an Azure order to be delivered next week. I only had 5# of rye on that order to use as a starter for sourdough (something else I'm new at) and I have until tomorrow night to finish my Azure order. Looks like I'll be adding more rye to that order now. Thanks.

    The big issue with the storing up grains is how do you grind it with a wonder mill? I am thinks about getting a manual mill for just a time like that. I have not canned much in several years but need to get back at it. I have also thought about getting a freeze dryer. My husband was the hunter and we always had meat. He passed away in December of 2020
    Ps I have planted beans that where 7 years old and about 50% sprouted

    • @GrainsandGrit
      @GrainsandGrit  3 года назад +2

      First of all, I am so sorry for the loss of your husband so recently. I know that must feel like a part of you has died. I pray that the Lord gives you comfort and peace during this.
      Secondly, to answer your questions, yes a manual grain mill is definitely great to have. I am on the lookout for one myself. Another option is making sure you have a generator you can plug your electric grain mill to.
      That is awesome about your beans sprouting after 7 years! Not a bad sprout rate at all.

    You are absolutely fabulous. Do you ever stock up on water? Can you possibly do some in store grocery shopping videos? It would be awesome if you could show how you do your full shopping trip

      Thanks for the compliment 😀 We actually have a well so water isn’t an issue for us. And I do plan on doing some Azure Standard hauls in the near future which is where I purchase most of my bulk items. I also have a full pantry list that list the quantities of items I need for at least a month. Before I do my big grocery trip I look over that list and buy what I need to always have at least a months worth of that item in stock at all times. I hope that makes sense. 😀

      @@GrainsandGrit Better look into the government having "tagged" all the wells and springs. I used to know more about this but 10 years gone by plus my age I cannot remember many details, but at the time I was very angry because it appeared they may try to take over all the springs and wells that they know about. Not to make you paranoid -- just good to check up on this angle!

    I absolutely love that you brought the bible into this! I had never thought about the fact that they had food but they didn't have grains. I did not know that soaking grains brought out more nutrients either I just knew they were better for you, do you have a video on soaking grains?

      Thank you so much! I do believe the Bible is applicable to ALL parts of our life, including food especially! Funny you asked about soaking grains because I JUST posted the video all about it. Spoiler alert: I do not believe we should be soaking our grains all the time, but there is a place for it :-) You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/iudxmqan2CI/видео.html

    Odd question, but I rarely cook beans of any kind and when I do they come from a can, what all do you use your dried beans in? We ate lots of peas, string beans, or butter beans from the garden that my mom canned but she didn’t cook many dried beans so I guess I never think about them.

    • @GrainsandGrit
      @GrainsandGrit  3 года назад +1

      I actually LOVE butter beans (my recipe is quite hardy with some red pepper flakes) and homemade cornbread. That's the meal. It's so simple, yet so flavorful and delicious. I also love Great northern beans cooked with a ham hock, smoked pork necks, or bacon with homemade cornbread - delicious.
      I also like beans and rice. You can do black beans and rice (a Cuban dish), also re-fried beans for Mexican food, black beans go great with fried eggs and salsa (Mexican dish)...bottom line, research Mexican and Cuban dishes for some excellent recipes using beans. They have perfected the bean.
      Kidney or red beans are used in chili!
      As far as using dried beans, it just takes some extra prep. Just soak them overnight or use the "quick soak" method on the package and then cook beans as usual.
      This sounds like a great video idea. I will add it to the list :-)
