La Cumparsita es un tango cuya melodía fue creada y escrita entre finales del año 1915 y principios de 1916 por el músico uruguayo Gerardo Matos Rodríguez. Poco después y a pedido de Matos Rodríguez, recibió arreglos musicales de Roberto Firpo quien posteriormente a esto, la tocó junto a su orquesta por primera vez en público.

Друзья Херардо Родригеса были в восторге и показали произведение известному аргентинскому композитору Роберту Фирпу, который вместо рецензии переложил марш на танго, отказавшись от соавторства, указав, что эта превосходная мелодия принадлежит Херардо Родригесу. Херардо Родригес приложил к танго лирику и назвал произведение La Cumparsita, что в переводе означает “небольшая группа”.
Испытывая финансовые трудности Херардо Родригес продал авторские права на танго издательству "Брейер" за 20 песо.
Позднее, поступив на дипломатическую службу и будучи представителем Уругвая в Германии, Херардо Родригес обнаружил, что его произведение с другим названием и другой лирикой пользуется большой популярностью в Европе. Потребовалось двадцать лет, чтобы суд восстановил авторские права. Это танго до сих пор покоряет своей страстной выразительностью и позволяет многим найти утешение в прелести его ритма и мелодии.
