    I learned, as a substitute teacher, to always take my own lunch, and that the best idea is a sandwich. They sometimes give you a schedule where your lunch break is different from the school's lunch break. Sometimes they don't have a microwave, so it makes it hard to eat instant soup. Sometimes the cafeteria ladies don't have change, no, not even for a five dollar bill. I liked how you put that at the beginning about bringing your own lunch. If you don't you might end up not eating at all the whole work day. :(

    It's difficult to find subs in my district. I love that you're prepared and responsible. I had a sub that was like that, but she left the district at the end of last year. Thanks for sharing these tips.

    "Be yourself" is the best thing. I always come prepared. And I always have anecdotes... from my own life (journalist for 30 years)... Or a small story/parable. A joke. I note the names of unruly kids on the whiteboard... Change their places round. I walk around the classroom... I sometimes deal with big kids who like to be threatening, I go right up to them and ask them what's wrong? It works well, I'm nice, I demand respect, and I give it. I always imagine they are all wanting to get on in life.

      If you are certified, why do you want to be a substitute teacher?

    • @DrDoom-wo8hb
      @DrDoom-wo8hb 5 лет назад

      @@Michelle-pn9xt Because in many districts in the U.S., the route to a permanent position is through subbing, since jobs are hard to come by, as there are so many applicants. Subbing allows a potential teacher to gain exposure to administrators and human resources professionals, as well as connect with other teaching professionals. Hope that helps explain the OP's reasoning.

    I have a q, have u ever used behavior models like meditaion with the class like a few "breath in, breath outs" after recess or lunch? Or how about music? Like calm music, how would that affect the class? Also, I read that kids missing recess for bad behavior is horrible because they dont get to expend that energy...what do u think?

    These tips are awesome, but for someone who is not looking to pursue education as a career and is just looking for a part time job, would you say subbing is worth it? Is it ever enjoyable/fun, or is it usually straight up miserable? Do the pros outweigh the cons? Would you prefer it over serving in a restaurant or working retail? Input from anyone is greatly appreciated!

    • @NReluctant
      @NReluctant  6 лет назад +5

      Casey Cherolini subbing is like most jobs, it has its good and bad days. However I mostly subbed for high school and they tend to have excellent planning blocks or periods which is nice because it’s a built in break in the day. I personally would recommend it over retail because the hours are also consistent, no worries about working late at night. Hope this helps :)

    • @NReluctant

      Candy is a huge motivator in high school too. Just make sure it’s allergic free, Dumdum Suckers are a good option. Stickers are more affordable though. Anything video game or pop culture related works, also I have found animal stickers to still work for high school.

    I have never subbed or taught - can someone tell me what "dropping people's names on the charts" means? 3:54 What charts? Is it good or bad to have your name on a chart?

    • @NReluctant
      @NReluctant  6 лет назад +2

      In Elementary Schools charts are very common to visually show students where their behavior stands. It is just any type of representation of behavior. For example, one class I subbed for had a stop light and if students saw their name or assigned number on green they knew they were doing good in terms of behavior, yellow meant they needed to be careful and watch their attitude, and red meant they weren't doing great. You will see all sorts of visual charts like this in classrooms now days, though assigned numbers are more common than names because I have been told by experienced elementary teachers that some schools no longer allow you to show a students name in relation to bad behavior because it shows the other students who is "bad" and who is "good". Having assigned numbers for each student lets them learn their number and still see where they stand in class without actually calling any particular child out for bad behavior.

    Could you do a video on how to start a youtube channel? Advice and stuff like that? I'd hate to pry, but do you make money, from reviewing products and the channel and all? I have been following all sorts of review channels, on things like music, movies, cameras, knives, gear, etc. and this channel is one of my favorites. It's just comfy. I think I'd like to make my own.
    Also, who's your favorite from a Clash of Kings? My favorite is Stannis.

      @NReluctant  8 лет назад

      +ClassicRockLivesOn That's a great idea! When I shoot my next videos I will do one. I do make a little money, but sadly it's not enough to even cover the cost of groceries for a month, much less survive off of. When I make the video I will explain how that aspect works, taxes, etc. and maybe even do a few videos on it if there's enough content there. Thanks so much for joining the fun here on the channel!!
      My favorite is Tyrion, but I think Arya is going to really be awesome in this book!!

    • @ClassicRockLivesOn

      +NReluctant Thanks so much! I understand that the pay wouldn't be very much (unless you have tons of people watching ads) but I read that you can become an affiliate with amazon and get some money if people purchase items through your links. I'm a student and I still live at home so I don't need to pay rent, I would just like to make enough money to purchase film, other cameras, etc. Just fun stuff really.
      I like Tyrion as well, keep reading, the best book in the series is up ahead. A Storm of Swords might be my favorite fantasy book ever, alongside the Hobbit and Redwall
