One does not need to give Ebay additional money to be a "serious reseller". I've watched the fees climb steadily over the last 25 years, in order to be a serious business owner one must make sure they aren't leaking profits all over the place! Love the videos & keep up the good work!

I am a strong believer that if I don't promote, my items do not show up in searches. I am also a strong believer that this does not apply to all sellers.

      If I don't promote, I don't sell anything.
That said, eBay admits 70% of sellers don't promote so apparently not promoting works for some.

    • @casper001971
      @casper001971 2 дня назад +2

It is believed that if there was 100 exact items and you didn't promote, your item could be at the bottom of the search and unless buyers click on every page or scroll to the bottom you will not be seen, then you promote 2 percent that could put your item at #50, 5 percent puts your item at #30, 10% at #20 and 50% puts your item at the top. Then if you don't promote, your item may not show up at all in the search. I know this because I have had several ebay reps explain this to me, every rep has a different story to tell about promoted items.
But going back to what I originally said. This does NOT apply to all sellers. Like Kevin, he sells a lot of items without promoting. Maybe ebay has its favorites, maybe Kevin has some family members or friends that works at ebay pulling some strings, who knows why this happens to some sellers and not others.

It depends on the item you sell. Some items don’t need to be promoted to sell and other items seem sell only through promoted listings. I have sold electronics (cameras & projectors) and anything do with trains without promotion. Everything else has sold through promoting it.

Viewers not only buy your items, they constantly visit your store. EBay sees that organic traffic and ranks your store higher because of it.

over 24 years selling on ebay. I have never, ever promoted a listing. It's a part time hobby for me. $9,000 in sales in the last 90 days. I typically sell about $20K per year. The last 3 months I have been listing daily, every day, no exceptions. That has done more to help my sales than anything else.

I promote everything I list, except rare cases. I'm in it for the quickest sale possible. I'd say what you should do just depends on your personal business model/accomodations. Btw I usually do 5%--8% depending on what it is. Definitely not standard promoting 😬
Edit: also, I never adjust the price because of promotions. My price is only calculated from other listings and sold comps

I have started a RUclips challenge where my wife and I taking 100 and flipping that $100 to $1 million. I started out promoting everything but I realized a month in I was giving away some of my profits. So I quit doing that and the same day I did that I started posting 5 things a day( when the budget allowed it ) and I have a $3100, 90 day total with no promotions. My RUclips only has 5 subs and I don’t share this journey with any of my friends and family so it’s all eBay and my wife and I finding the right stuff to sale.

I've been selling on and off for 20+ years, I've probably promoted 3 items, only the highest prices items that I needed an edge for. Otherwise it's not worth the fees they take, I've never offered refunds either. It boils down to what Kevin always says, "It all depends on you and what your needs are." There's no right or wrong about it.

My past two years is proof that promoted isn't needed. Two years ago, I promoted everything. Last year, I reduced my promoted listings down to 50% of listings and my sales were 25% higher. This year, it is less than 25% promoted and most of that is old stuff leftover from last year and I'm up another 15% in sales compared to the year before and it's only been half the year, we have yet to get through 4th quarter. Last year, I made the decision to focus more on ASP and sell through rate instead of relying on promoting and have been the better for it. I spend less time sourcing, sell less items but am making more $$ with far less promoted sales (only 10% of total sales come from promotion). And I don't do social media.

I do promote at 2% only on a 3600 item store. I had 200 old listings of carded Hot Wheels, I had not listed any additional Hot Wheels this year and we all know what ever category you list in is where you get sales. So I put 100 of them on at 9% promotion which is like 18% since the shipping is almost equal to the cost of the item. I noticed that, listing I could send an offer to, it was all Hot Wheels that were 9% promoted. This week I took them off the 9% (had 8 sales) and put them all on 20% off sale and they started flying out the door which is amazing since they have been listed for 18-30 months. I like the sale aspect because it earns me repeat customers, due to getting a good deal. I dream of genie.

    I Dream Of Genie .
I started seriously selling Jan 25th this year. did promote my entire store. But I started to realize the “suggested promoted rate” kept getting higher and higher.
I had most at 9% and some at 15% (in saturated categories) but I started getting better at buying better items and I I did not like listing something that sold overnight and eBay gets an extra 10%
After a few of those I lowered everything to 2% and did not really notice a difference. About 40 days ago any new listings I did not promote . 14 days ago I took everything off promotions. My 90 day total still hovers about the same $16K

I promoted for a few months as an experiment. After looking at the numbers it didn't make enough difference for me to off set the cost increase. I don't think it makes enough difference in the catagories I sell in. I heard a wise man say, "If you take good pictures and write good titles stuff will sell."

I see that there is still a lot of controversy regarding promoting. I would be curious to see if you “Kevin” promoted all your listings at lowest percentage, if it would increase sales… I think it would be the only way to truly know if it’s worth the extra fees or not. 🤷‍♀️
    P.S. I’m not a reseller on eBay.

I dream of Geinie! I don't promote, nor think it is necessary to do so. I have only been selling for three months, so I still have a lot to learn. Listening to a few experienced resellers some promote and some don't, but the advice stays the same for all of them, pick good items for low prices, take great pictures, use good key words, and list competitively. So that's what I am trying my best to do.
One reseller that I listen to promotes all their items, so I promoted a few items, some sold, and some still haven't two months later. I decided it wasn't a good business model for me. This may be crazy, but I believe you give power to what you focus on, positive or negative.
Thank you for all your advice. I hope to shake your hand one day!

  • @dolfinwriter5389

I have never promoted and I don't intend to ever start. I am past the point of trying to make my reselling my primary income, but I still supplement my income from eBay sales and I plan to continue that for many years to come, in addition to liquidating personal collections and liquidating my dad's collections to supplement HIS Social Security. What I have noticed seems to be a better boost to ongoing sales is to continually list new items. Not only do many of the new items I list sell quickly, but It is odd how often after I list another 20, 30, 50 items, suddenly I sell a bunch of things that have been just sitting for a couple of years.
What's even more odd is that at times I may have just two or three of an item that has been listed for a couple of years, and suddenly all three will sell within a few days to people in different parts of the country.

Promoting depends on what type of things you're selling. I both promote and don't promote in my store - I promote postcards and don't promote Barbies and toys. Since postcards is a low sell through category and has millions of items, it needs promoting. Barbies sell for themselves and have high sell-through rate so don't need promoting at all.

I tried promoting a few items at 2%. Some sold, some haven't. I don't think it matters enough for me to promote at any amount. I just price my items competitively.

Promotion may be good for me-too resellers, who sell common items that ordinary people might buy on impulse. This is really the toughest market, as there are zillions of the same thing. However, if you are selling antiques, or industrial items, or auto parts, you don't need to promote - buyers who need an ACE CONTROLS HB-15-50-CC-N-H1370 HYDRAULIC DAMPER will put the part number in and find your item.
(Thanks to Resale Rabbit for the example I grabbed!)

This year i decided to aggressively promote/advertise my listings. Of course my goal is to sell more and so far I'm up just about 40% this year. I think the increase in sales justify the extra cost. You are right you do not need to promote. I'm coaching a brand new reseller on eBay and I advised not to promote. He quickly sold out and in the jeans category. If you have desirable items, price them right and have proper shipping cost your items will sell.

I go back and forth about promoting. I do it sometimes, like during the summer slow down, but not during Q4. I only promote at 2-3%. Although, I sell a lot of vintage one off items, and a lot of those aren't promoted at all. I have been annoyed to see that my promoted items are at the very bottom of the page, instead of at the top. What? I don't think I should pay to have my items LOWER in the results. I do think that if you sell certain things where there is a lot of competition you have no choice.

    I promote thoughtfully.
For instance, I don't promote new listings; they're already getting bumped.
Or, if I'm selling something that has a lot of competition, I'll promote 2-3% for the bump.
I haven't looked closely at the stats as I've only been selling a lot on ebay for a couple months. So that may change.

I would recommend for new sellers to not start promoting if they do not plan to continue...I stopped my promotions for a month and my entire store completely died in sales. i Pad my pricing so I can run promotions..... i Pad every single offer by about 30% for fees and promotions.... I allow for a 20% discount on my items and the promotion fees. That way I get my return on investment numbers that looking for. I figured if eBay had some skin in the fight that maybe they will help me sell it faster and I'm okay with that.

The only thing I don't understand about youtube re-sellers is that they mention what an item cost them, then they tell the price they got for it. I would feel ripped off if I knew what a seller paid for their items. There is also a female reseller who brings in over $100,000 a year in addition to marrying a re-seller who is established who asks people to buy her a cup of coffee on her youtube page. I'd buy someone who had nothing a cup of coffee and even a meal.

I promote most listings--the exceptions being high turnover collectables where buyers have very specific searches set up. I use standard rates on a sliding scale: zero in the first week, relying on the 'new listing boost' for visibility; 2% for the second week, 4% weeks 3 & 4; after a month the lower of 'recommended' and 8%.
75% of impressions come from promotions but only 30% of sales, suggesting that organic impressions are more attractive than promoted, possibly because organic impressions are likely to be a closer match to the search terms (incidentally making a mockery of the 'Best Match' algorithm).
I also run markdown sales on a regular rotation of categories--books, toys, collectables, tools etc.
My margins are high enough I can afford a few percent extra costs without adjusting the price.
I don't believe you *have to* promote; it depends on your inventory and your preference or need vis a vis speed of turnover versus cost of sale.
I don't Dream of Jeannie (despite Barbara Eden's charming attractions) as I'm a UK seller!

I done a test on a smaller store of 700 items and added promote at 50% just in the hopes of clearing it out to help with my storage and moving issues at the time and my sales was pretty much dire hence I don't really feel as if its vital

I hate ebay's 'promoting' ... I've only done it this past month because my wife lost her job and I've needed to kick things up a notch, out of desperation I promoted everything in my store, figured wth why not see what happens...... Very little has happened haha. I've sold some stuff on ebay but it doesn't feel like my sales have increased. I love Mercari's 'promote' button, it just takes a small % off your current total and 'puts it higher in results' or something... So when my wife lost her job I went WILD with promotions on mercari and sold a TON of stuff. Had my most sales ever in 1 day after two days of hard promotion on mercari.

So I have promoted over the last few years because that was the MO a couple years ago.. But I don’t pay fees on all my listings. The promoted fees only count towards the ones that people click on through the promotion. So I don’t really feel that it’s a bad thing. I only do 3%, and sometimes they sell promotion and sometimes they don’t and they just sell their own. It’s another factor to get your listing moving. And if you’re not giving a high percentage to it. Why not?. 3% if it sells is better than 0% if it doesn’t sell.

Promoted listings are just another Ebay money grab. Case in question. I had 2 similar items (condition differed). Promoted one. Did not list other yet. Promoted one, bunch of watchers, no offers first week. 2nd week those views and watchers cut in half. by 2 months, no new watchers and very few views. Listed non-promoted, 3 days it sold. Pulled promoted one, relisted non promoted, sold in 4 days. The big thing on promoted is supposedly impressions meaning supposedly they are one click from your item. Impressions dont relegate to sales.
Talked to another seller that promoted at 100% just for shit and giggles, that item never did show up on page 1. It also never sold.
The ones that claim you have to promote, aren't as bright as they think they are. They let ebay run their business instead of them using ebay to run theirs. Top Rated Longtime seller here of 24 years,

    About 2x sales at 3%
When I promoted at "suggested rate" I could hardly keep up with sales but it was often over 10% so I stopped.
I do not think you need to promote but it will get you more impressions, traffic tab can show you that. If you convert or not will depend on your item, total final cost to buyer and quality of listing.
Even 100% promoted won't sell a crap item that's way overpriced.
