Just watched this video, it brought many happy memories back. I owned a narrowboat from 1998 until I gifted it to my brother in 2016. I moored at the Hatherton Marina and did many trips in either direction from there. I did notice as you passed the marina that my brother must have been out on the boat.
Another great vlog. A flashback came to me when you mentioned loosing your wire brush to the drink. Jo, not sure if as a child you wore mittens in the winter and if your mother would tie a string to each mitten and run the string through your sleeve so you wouldn't loose your mittens. Here in Canada or at least Northern Ontario that was a common practice and some meaner kids would call the line that attached the two mittens "idiot strings". Now certainly that term is not directed to you but the next time you are working with tools near the water, tethering them to your wrist may not be a bad idea...... Kudos Mike on the mic placement on our t-shirt. I had to do a double take at the beginning as I thought you had a new dino t-shirt with the beast singing with a mic, but you got me.... Fair locks and clear skies
Super cute ducklings. I don’t think you ever get over the wonderment and awe of them. George looked like he was having a fab time. Like the music too. 👍
Looks lovely there. There are some fascinating places to visit ahead of you but watch out for the Shroppie shelf. Market Drayton has lots of shops and there is a Co-op at Audlem. Nantwich is very pretty and the Chinese restaurant will deliver to boats there. Lovely farm produce available part way up the Audlem flight. The Shroppie was our introduction to narrowboating so a favourite. :)
Thanks for all of that... we’d found most of it ourselves, but the Chinese takeaway that delivers to boats is welcome news. Now I just have to figure out which of the several Chinese takeaways is the one! M
That bridge at 9:36, we had a rope swing there from the right hand side "hole" and used to swing out across the canal, and above startled boats (this was back in the 70's). Happy days.
We did this stretch last summer, though in the other direction (Autherley to Great Heywood). It's a nice little canal, it feels like it is between the main lines. One thing I find fascinating is the way you keep meeting the other major transport networks - the railways and the motorways, all following the same routes for the same reasons.
Idyllic guys, idyllic..."this green and pleasant land", your choice of music helped. Georges travels around England continue, I'll follow him and them for as long as you post, thanks again you two, and thanks to George also of course...
Ooooh Joy daddy ducks just share the love around . Thanks gang quite relaxing watching you cruise along . Make the best of the weather as good old England loves its rain ,thanks again and cheers from OZ.
On that unseasonably warm Good Friday I was walking the same canal a few miles south, near Wombourn. July heat in April is nice, but somehow worrisome. A lovely video again.
More useless information from me:-The narrows you encountered is something to do with the Bunter Pebble Beds, I mention that because there's a well written geological book about the S&W and almost ever page shouts BUNTER PEBBLE BEDS which I found very amusing (My Management is a Geological nut - so I teased her with the references..).Four Ashes was a WWII resiting of a 'strategic chemical works' = explosives - away from urban areas. It's gone through several re-incarnations over the years that we've been cruising, the latest shows a major reworking of the site on the other side of the canal (as Google Earth shows me) - I wonder what it is??Our boat's hull was made not far away - a pleasant remembrance.
another great vlog, when you get onto the Llangollen it's worth a 10 minute walk from bridge 3 or 4 to go and sample the ice-cream from snugburys you won't regret it.
Used to work at that chemical works you passed throu. Started off as midland tar distillers many years ago and has had many owners since . In fact it was two chemical companies either side of the canal and in the end one of the companies an American one bought out the entire site . They didn't make any finished products but made chemicals to sell on to be made into other things or as additives. 😃
@@MinimalList Don't know about the argon not used when I was their. Made when I was vinyl pyridine which went into tyres. Phenolic compounds which went into Dettol and plastics. Used a lot of vapour phase chemistry one of only 7companies in the world to do so which I thought was pretty neat. Distillation used a lot too hardly surprising given its tar distilling origins 😃
great video, love the way George sits, paws together, photobombing your intro. Ever thought of using Tesco delivery? Moored midst solar, sewage & parkland!
Hey Michael and Jo, Another great video, thnk u Spat out my drink right at beginning when jo voiced her opinion on daddy ducks, lol! Happy cruising, Davie x
Look forward to your vids. Music is absolutely perfect for your travels. Didn't notice last time although I should have, that Gojiro from Japan speaks English with a Canadian accent! Still haven't seen him/her move its lips, ventriloquist or not you can normally see something quiver. ;-P
Just observing at one point you commented you had overstocked with coal. Each video the stack grew smaller so that now your coal usage calculations looks great.
@@MinimalList The ducks at Disney world are wild, well aside from the guests that are told not to feed them feeding them, they are free to come and go as they please and Disney does nothing to encourage or discourage them from being there, that sounds like wild ducks to me although Disney did do a lot to discourage land based predators like fox and coyote from being on property, but there were plenty of alligators.
They’re not really wild where they’ve got a captive audience to feed them. You can see major behavioral differences between the ducks that live out among the farms vs the ones that have secured (and fight to keep secured) a prime spot near a mooring point in a town... anywhere they can exploit humans they tend to do things differently than the much more skittish ones we come across on the rivers and edges of farms. I’d think at Disney they’ll have formed a resident population for the same reasons. M
My, an evening watch for me. Still a great video, and no, I didn't have to Google. I have a strange friend (Wait, all my friends are strange) who is an avian biologist. It's a great way to learn things you never knew you didn't want to know. Be gone to the north!
cruising, history, local points of interest, ducklings and gratuitous shots of George. I don't know what else you could ask for from a Minimal List video.
Silly question and you may have answered this early on and I just don't remember but what does the "1900" represent under your boat name ? All the Best Bill
Possibly, but no obvious connection between the little history we have of the original boat commissioner and the mill. Many suggested a steam tug Perseverance that used to work the Wey, but it had no obvious relationship to 1900 either. M
I agree, Jo, Drakes have a lot to answer for... in so many ways!... yet I am still trying to get my head around why Michael would have read a 10 year old report by an Australian University studying sexually antagonistic coevolution.... or indeed why such a study exists in the first place. However I did find a similar report on the tsetse fly most enlightening.
Wish had canals across the US. Could just float down the St. Clare river and the Detroit river. Just too many wakers or wankers for you transplants. 😀😀

Laughed out loud at Jo's muttered "bastards" re. duck fathers. Another delightful video. Thanks guys.
When she’s right, she’s right! M
Today I saw my first baby goslings. Such adorable balls of fluff. Mom and Dad were both watchful.
We’ve got a bunch of them beside us this morning. Love their antics! M

Drakes are definitely what Jo called them. Great to see the sunshine everywhere looks so much better..

A great watch thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! M
We came down the Staffs and Worcester from the other way and up the Wolverhampton 21 on good Friday, must have just missed you.
Must have just done, though we weren’t at the locks for long. M

Definitely worrisome! Thanks for watching!
Next month we'll be following in your wash!
Enjoy!! M
I love ducks and baby ducks even more. I fish a lake that has ducks on it, and I enjoy watching them grow up. Great video.
The are such cute little balls of fluff darting across the water
I always end watching your vlogs with a smile and feeling good. Thank you so much. Donald.
Thanks for the smiles! M
Great video today. Love that you two take time out to show us the ducklings! Congrats on finishing a section of canal!
Thanks! We love the little wee birds, and they’re a bit early this year. No goslings yet, but we’ll show them too! M
Enjoyed the slowed down pace of the canal cruising footage and the slow relaxed music.
Thanks! M

George is the cutest! We know others that have used Tesco delivery and it has worked really well for them. We haven’t tried it yet.
Great video as usual. Thanks.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Another beautiful video! I know where you hide Georges ball now! :) xx

Too funny.
Ah, Porco Rosso had a cameo in your vid. Nice. Anyone who doesn't know who that is should really look up Studio Ghibli.
I was rather surprised to see him peering at me! M

Hi guys yet another good video. Hope to see you in Wales as we are heading that way, we just got on the Middlewich. Keep the videos coming.
Hope pike don't take the small ducks. Swirl, quack, chomp. Seen it happen. You'll enjoy - are probably enjoying - the SU. Lovely canal.
😳 poor ducklings! What a way to go!
a realy relaxing cruise today thank you, was that the monkey bridge at 9:40 .
I saw no monkeys... I can’t remember if that’s the railroad bridge or one of the two aqueducts for the sewage plant. M

Well we still have four bags left... (we have three inside) so it’s not as bad as we thought!
After looping around Birmingham, enjoy the straightness of the Shroppie.
It’s gorgeous! Loving it! M
When I worked at EPCOT we had ducks at the Japan pavilion that used to switch off on babysitting duty, that is probably what that duck was doing.
Might be, though I don’t think that’s very common in wild populations. The females are usually quite aggressive towards other chicks. M
