I was 18 back then. Left in 1987 to Emigrate to Australia. I now live in Rural SA. It was great to see Paisley again as it was when I was younger. 🏴
a was born in 1992 in Cumbernauld a just love seeing old times vids and i think wow man i was only 4 then - and such and such was doing this at that time
This is the Paisley I knew and loved. Remember it so well. Cutting about and off to Carnegies, then one of the Clubs (the Dancin') in the evening. Taxi rank battles afterwards!
The High Street is very much alive with small retail outlets unlike 2016, (and bus liveries are totally different). Arnotts and Littlewoods are still open in 1996! Can't help feeling that the town was in every sense better than it is now. Shame. I think the Braehead Centre sounded the death knell for Paisley
I moved into Paisley in 1995. This clip shows the town I loved. Arnotts, M&S, the town was great. Sad to see it now. Thank you council and planners for ruining a once great town.
I just moved here about three and a half months ago and it's interesting to see what it looked like back in the day. I'm really liking it here so far, everyone has been kind and welcoming and I feel like I've settled in pretty well because of it! Initially, I was a bit unsure about moving to Paisley because I'd heard mixed things but... I made a good choice. More relevant to this video, I'd be really interested to see what the Paisley Centre looked like inside back then. It's incredibly surreal walking around it because it's like an eerie abandoned mall...
ruclips.net/video/dd_vVBwOi3A/видео.html Here you can see what it looked like. It was absolutely thriving back in the mid 90s. Now it's utterly depressing.
@@eccIefechan That clip is exactly how I remember it when I left in 2002. Can't imagine what it would be like seeing it as an "eerie abandoned mall" like the poster above said.
@@methylene5Really, when you look at the range of stores even when it was thriving it didn't really have a lot of variety. I think I walked through it more often than I ever when into any stores. Funnily the older shoping area the Piazza has managed to bounce back as the main hub of Paisley. There's also nearby shopping centres that do offer more variety that has been the death of Paisley, it's essentially a ghost town nowadays - crazy to think for Scotlands largest town
Around 1998,99 was the begginging of the end for paisley town centre. The 1980s was the best decade ever in paisley, for shops and pubs and also into the early to mid 90s. Then its just got worse every day. A would trade the whole lot of the town centre we have today even for just half of this here. Its known to be the quickest town in scotland to go downhill rapid fast. And the biggest. It has nothing now! A dont believe braehead took away paisleys trade. I have always loved the city centre in glasgow and if that couldnt change paisley then i cant see how braehead could. And the city centres only 15 minutes away on the train or car. And even a bus gets you there.
I realise how much of an impact Braehead had on Paisley, but I remember many owners of businesses saying the rates in Paisley were killing them. Maybe if the council had listened to their complaints and lowered the rates more businesses would have stayed open. Instead we are left with the substandard rubbish we have today. But then the situation worsened when the High Street was pedestrianised. Delivery Lorrie’s couldn’t get to the shops. Even today there is still this aim for a continental cafe culture. It never really took off.
For years, they were talking about making an entertainment complex with a cinema, restaurants, and some other activities (bowling/arcade) very similar to what Xscape ended up being. It's something Paisley has always been lacking, even with lower rates I doubt Paisley would've really lasted much longer. Complete lack in adaptation to a higher number of young families, they'd rather fill Paisley with Cafés and Pubs for all the old yins. Now with the digital age Paisley is a ghost town with very little to do. As a teenager in the 90's I was always heading into Glasgow.
I was 36 when this was filmed . I moved to England in 1978 ( work ) . Does anyone from the 1960's - early 1970's remember Cuthbert ? He came from a well off family and had some sort of learning disabilities . Used to walk all over the town . Well known guy back in the day , often wondered what became of him.
I was 29 in 1996. I remember Cuthbert. He used to hit him self on his head with a walking stick. Got knocked down by an ice cream van on Arkleston Rd. I'm so annoyed at these eijits bad mouthing my town. Paisleys a great place. Im a buddy all the way.
Used to love going to Paisley with my parents and when I got a tad older we were allowed to get the bus from Johnstone to Paisley and would spend the day going round the shops. There were loads of shops in early 2000s. Braehead opened and it slowly died. Now Braehead is dying due to the internet and getting packages delivered to your door within 48 hours. We used to get the bus from To Braehead under the bridge of the multi-storey car park. I remember seeing an article saying it was one of the most polluted places in Britain due to the fumes from all the buses. It got revamped into a taxi lane. I remember how dark and heavy the air felt waiting on the bus.
I remember Cuthbert very well. I was living on 25 George St Paisley ,on the corner of Story St. Their was a pub on the ground floor ,and a pub on the corner across the street Cuthbert was a very social person, would always be very courteous, if you took time to talk to him, I heard from my sister , who still lives in Paisley, that Cuthbert passed away in early 80's of natural causes.I moved out to Canada in 71, for a better life, have never regretted it. Do still good memories of my childhood in Paisley.
I too remember Cuthbert. A very special guy indeed. I always remember him and his little walking stick. He was a kind soul. I grew up singing in the Paisley Abbey Boys' Choir from the age of 7 in 1953. I had two nicknames... one at school: Phersy..... and one in the boys' choir: Mac. I left Paisley in 1987 for the States where I became a history teacher. My students here called me Mr. Mac. I have been back to Paisley several times over the past 32 years.... but it's not home anymore.
I'm JUST old enough to remember Paisley back then. It hasn't actually changed that much. Most of what we see in this video is still recognizable. Save for the big square outside of Gilmour Street station (which isn't there yet in this video).
I came to Paisley the year before. Had forgotten that the area round Paisley Cross, especially High Street was so alive with retail outlets compared to 2020. Sad.
Does anyone remember wee Dougie? Or the other guy who sold newspapers outside burtons, then across from there at the other side of the cenotaph, just round the corner from the high street, moss street?
1996. Look at it. Paisley centre is alive and busy. As yet there are no smartphones so for the mo there's no mobile internet which will eventually kill Paisley's and every other High street in the UK. Braehead will be the final nail in Paisley's coffin. Sad.
@@graeme2011 You're right. The big stores had no compunction about killing off 000s of small traders. But these big stores never ever imagined that anything would come for them: and that " thing" was mobile internet shopping.
