    I have a 2006 Prerunner with 200k miles, just bought a Keystone Passport, dry weight 4880. My first trip was pulling home from Atlanta GA, to central TX, 900 miles+- . The Mighty Taco handles the trailer fine. Yes it slows down on the hills, and gas mileage sucks when towing, but I have no problem keeping the speed limit 90% of the time. I know a lot of people who think you need a 600 hp mini locomotive turbo duelly 4X to pull a trailer once a year, but the Tacoma can handle a mid 5k pound trailer fine.

      Thanks for the info Jim. I have seen multiple Taco owners on here back up the ability for the truck to handle this load, considering it will be flat driving and infrequently done.

    Just for future reference, WD 40 is not a lubricant. WD stands for water displacement and this stuff is mainly a solvent and is good at breaking up rust. Anytime you need a lubricant you should use a silicone spray where there is light friction. Or a grease for tougher jobs. I find white lithium grease, that you can get in a spray can, does a great job and does not dry out easily.

    • @Duf
      @Duf  6 лет назад +4

      Hmm I believe you but I can't tell you how many things I have successfully lubricated over the years with the product. :) However good tip and next time it sticks I'll pull out the silicon.

      Look on EBay for Equalizer lubricant. It is a blue lube and you put a small pea size on the hitch head (where bars go into) that is enough lubricant to stop creaking and groaning. Also use some of that lube and lube up that hitch ball as well. DO NOT lube the L brackets.

    I have the same truck with K&N Cold filter and a very similar size and weight of trailer. Having the ECT/PWR on, the truck makes lots of noise but can easily handle the weight and size of the trailer. I live in Newfoundland Canada and every mile or two are hills and more hills. I've been hauling trailers around for the past 16 years and this is probably the best truck I've had for hauling this size trailer except for the engine revs and mileage. Enjoy your Taco and your trailer.

      I have a 2012 Tacoma Prerunner with a tow pkg. Called factory in NC and they brought up my truck. I asked if I would have a problem pulling my 17' 3000 lb trailer. They said no. Truck could have a total of 1100 lbs. including load, passengers and fuel which I wouldn't even come close and could still pull a slightly larger RV, just using common sense of down shifting, no AC, no passing at high speeds, etc. I feel very comfortable pulling it over mtn passes and for the long haul. I do stop at the rest stop at the top of a 10 mile, 6% grade tho to cool down. BYW, I'm a 70 yo widow lady who's been camping for years and listened when those who know spoke

      Susan Emerson if you have the V6 then you should have no problem. The factory probably got confused and thought you were talking about payload capacity which is different and in indeed is 1100lbs on most trucks. Towing capacity should be between 6300-6500lbs for V6 Trucks equipped with the tow package.

    I pull a 10000 pound 30 foot Toyhauler with an F150, been towing for 30 years, a mix of heavy machinery and 20 years towing an RV trailer. Your truck should be fine for the most part it would help you know how the truck is doing if you have it weighed at a truck stop. Weigh the truck by itself then the truck and trailer and you will see how the weight transfers on the truck's axles. Also try and adjust the weight distribution more so the rear of the truck doesn't squat so much this will help steering in windy conditions much better. Feel to let me know if you have any questions.

    I have a '19 Tacoma TRD Off Road and am considering buying a travel trailer. I'm using information from videos like this to help guide my decision as to how much trailer I can tow. In looking at these discussions, I've realized that towing is a very specialized subset of vehicle operation that's not very well understood. The general consensus is that you shouldn't exceed 50% (very conservative) to 80% (probably too much) of your vehicle's towing capacity. Where you plan on driving, and how aerodynamic your trailer is seem to be the most significant factors in deciding how much you can pull. I think your trailer is just about at the limit of what you should be towing with your truck. You can do it, but loading your truck and trailer with a bunch of extra gear and trying to go up (or down!) a steep grade will tax your Tacoma.
    I've decided to buy a trailer that's no more than 60% of my truck's towing capacity, but really prefer it to be more like 55% or about 3,500 lbs.; If I want a bigger trailer, I need to get a bigger truck. I don't ever want to struggle going up a steep grade with a head wind, wear out my transmission, or worry about sharing the driving with my girlfriend with a really heavy trailer pushing my little truck around. I can also attest to how worthless WD 40 is as a lubricant. If you want the best aerosol lubricant, use Tri-Flow. Thanks for sharing!

    • @Duf
      @Duf  3 года назад

      I agree conservative is better. Luckily in my situation I never had to tow the trailer anywhere beyond to and from the RV dealer. The trailer was sold two years ago :)

    Always male sure your safety chains are under everything. If they test on anything, they can shift and get pinched and cause damage.
    I would echo some of the other comments posted here about whether you have too much trailer or not enough truck. Look at the sticker on drivers door jamb and look for GVW and GCVW. When towing these numbers are very important. GVW is the max weight of the vehicle and everything and everyone in it. GCVW is the max weight of the truck and trailer combined. If you really want to know how much you can legally and safely tow, load your tow vehicle with everything you plan on having in it (persons, pets , luggage, firewood, full fuel) and weigh it. Subtract that weight from the GCVW, this number is what you can safely tow.

    • @Duf
      @Duf  6 лет назад +1

      Yep my bad on not having the chains crossed.
      The towing capability on the V-6 Tacoma WITH the factory tow package is - "Toyota Tacoma has increased its maximum towing capacity by 300 pounds to an impressive 6,800 pounds when properly equipped."
      Yes it is not an ideal situation but it is doable in the limited use it will see for this duty, in my opinion.

    I have a 17 double cab TRD off-road. I was running 3800 rpm with my 26' camper. The engine being an Atkinson's doesn't make much power till 3600 rpm. I have no issues with hills either. It's a higher RPM than you'd like to see but totally fine. I also installed a k&n cold air to see if that helped and it did drop off to a higher gear and around 2600 rpm on the flats. It's a big haul for the truck, but takes it like a champ. No temp issues, just poor mpg, but that's expected when slightly over doubling the weight the engine has to move.

      Thanks for the testimony. Yea I never had any intention of using the Tacoma for cross country or other high demand situations. • @covidol5196
    @covidol5196 4 года назад +6

    First off I own a 2016 Tacoma ACLB TRD OR, I routinely tow boats, RV's and utility trailers both enclosed and open. Second, anyone with towing experience will tell you NEVER exceed 75% of your tow vehicles rated capacity, having that 25% "cushion" can mean the difference between life and death on the highway. Third, WD-40 is NOT a lubricant it is a water displacement chemical hence the WD in the name. Fourth, you ALWAYS cross your towing safety chains, in the event the tongue somehow manages to come off the ball. Crossing the safety chains in an "X" configuration will prevent the tongue from digging itself into the ground or asphalt thus preventing that unintended "insanely rapid reduction in speed" and face planting into the windshield. Fifth, electronic brake controllers are fantastic additions when towing, more importantly brakes need to be upgraded if one intends to tow frequently. There are numerous options available for the 3rd Gen Tacoma to upgrade the brakes, drilled and/or slotted brake rotors are a must, both StopTech and Power Stop makes economical and highly recommended solutions with Power Stop now offering finned brake drums. Replacing the rubber flexible brake hoses with stainless braided hoses adds even more braking power. The critical issue with brakes and towing is heat especially while driving on grades and again the aftermarket offers solutions for this issue.
    Going back to never exceeding 75% of rated towing capacity, there are driveline matters to contend with if you expect the tow vehicle to last. Universal joints aren't particularly fond of the added weight and jerking on the hitch when towing neither are front upper and lower control arm bushings when stopping the the added weight not to mention the added load on the transmission and rear axle bearings. A vehicle properly setup to tow being mindful of towed weight will last and provide safe and dependable towing for years, if not setup properly it is guaranteed you will soon become your mechanics best friend helping them put their kids through medical or law school.
    I get to laugh often seeing people on the road towing with the fronts of the tow vehicle pointing towards the sky, the safety chains not connected properly flying down the highway without a clue. I usually get to see them again, mostly pulled over on the shoulder with some mechanical or tire related issue. Don't be a TOW FOOL!

    I use a RAM 2500 Heavy Duty truck to tow our 8200 lbs. max weight trailer. Believe it or not we are just barely under our max PAYLOAD rating for this heavy duty truck when fully loaded with gas, people and cargo. I think if you check the sticker inside your drivers door of your truck for your max payload you will find you are probably going to be over. I would suggest in the interest of safety for yourselves and others on the road you should load it and the trailer like you would when going camping with a full fuel tank and any passengers you would be taking. Then go to a local scale house and check all your weights for your truck and trailer and make sure you are within your towing and payload limits with some safety margin. I work for the Ministry of Transportation in the province of Ontario so I have a good idea about towing safety. Check to make sure you are within your tricks limits and enjoy your camping!!
    P.S. it looks like you could tighten up your weight distribution bars. Measure the distance between your wheel and the top of your wheel well before you hook up the trailer. It shouldn’t be more than 1-2” drop in your truck when loaded. If there is tighten the chains on your WD bars until you are in the 1-2” range...

    When you set up a WD hitch, the manufacturer instructs to lift the hitch back up with the ball attached and then install the bars. That’s what keeps the truck/trailer level.
    The only thing I don’t like about towing my big load is the mpg sucks.
    Don’t be in a hurry.

    I have a 09 TRD Sport that I tow a 18' equipment trailer with and have taken the trailer from Virginia to Florida and back three times so far. One return trip included a 96 V8 explorer, I did use the spare on that trip; However it still has three of the original tires from 08. I also use it to transport my John Deere 1025R with the loader and backhoe locally. I don't have a brake controller hooked up and really don't need it, because I don't drive like I was supposed to be where I'm going an hour ago and I extend following distance and brake early. I actually have the same type hitch that you have however I don't use the sway bars, my trailer tracks perfectly. I did put LED lights on the edge of the fenders so I know where the trailer is while driving at night. I rewired the whole trailer and replaced all the regular lights with the LED lights, you can actually see the lights are on in the daylight so I'm very happy with them.
    Take your time, get used to towing and always brake early. The biggest issue you may have is crosswinds, that trailer has a big profile although the sway bars will help, you need to realize that you are at the limits of safe towing for your truck. You should always perform a pre trip inspection to identify any potential issues, low tire pressure is the #1 cause of blow outs. Personally I prefer to travel overnight, this offers cooler temperatures and less traffic; I drive from Va. to Fl. three times a year, it usually works out to a 12.5 to 13 hour drive. I stop at the welcome centers and rest areas as needed and usually eat breakfast half way through Ga. Getting through Jacksonville and Orlando is all about timing. So planning your trip can save a lot of time and wear and tear from sitting in traffic.
    I'm planning on getting a camper about half that size that will still have two axles.

    Just a heads up. It looks like you have your tow safety chains over your hitch. Just want to make sure you have them crossed under the hitch and stabilization bars. had a buddy loose the trailer and truck when the hitch came off, tongue dug in the ground and flipped the trailer. If the chains act as a cradle it can help prevent this. just looking out for you. Couldn't tell 100% but better say something than have an issue.

The transmission has an additional cooler. I need a Trans temp gauge. When I start I only put about 5 gals of water in the fresh tank. I also leave empty on the other tanks. I probably carry about an additional 800lbs of gear all told. 2 passengers. Total weight is 5600 lbs out of the 6500 max capability. I drive as much as 1000 miles to my destinations. I drive the I-5 from Oregon to LA. Here the route pulls many hills and 2 major passes. When I drive I put the transmission in 4D, no overdrive, so it pulls the trans up to a higher RPM. The overall performance is satisfactory. I usually pull steep hills at 35-45 mph. The rest is normal at a speed of 63mph in Cali. MPG is around 10-13. So cruising range is about 150 miles to refill. After disconnecting the truck gets around 19mpg. I have around 108k miles on my truck and have serviced the trans since I began pulling with no noticeable problems. So far I have pulled the trailer 10-12k miles. Hope this helps

      Thanks for the feedback. My feeling on it is basically you can tow 5k plus with a V6 Tacoma but it is not an ideal situation. Mine has the electronic brake controller and factory tow package that includes an aux tran cooler and more. That being said, when I had that trailer on the road I felt like the truck was at the limit of it's capabilities.

    On your new trailer if its new be aware to make as wide of Right hand turns as possible to avoid stressing your frame . I would look for broken frames on youtube channels . If it is not a new trailer I would inspect the frame from 4 ft before and behind the tandem axles . I caught mine before it collapsed . The twisting and scrubbing of the tires can push the cross braces through the web of the I beams or pull the welds through the I beams . Its really poor metal in the Lippert Frames .

    When you lower the hitch assembly to the receiver ball always have the hitch assembly safety lock in the up position. Once the receiver ball seats into the hitch assembly, lock down the safety lever to level lock position. If the safety lock doesn’t seat to the level lock position, then the hitch ball is not seated correctly. That noise your heard was the receiver ball banging the hitch assembly because it was not seated. I know you know about it now since I have just watched this segment in June of ‘18......

    Even though you may be under the max tow weight for the Tacoma you still have the payload limit that restricts you. I believe the listed payload on your Tacoma is 1150 pounds which includes people, cargo and TONGUE weight. The tongue weight on trailers are somewhere between 10 and 15 percent of the total weight of the trailer. So if you are towing a 6000 pound trailer you have a tongue weight of 600 to 700 pounds. 1150 minus 700 leaves you with 450. If you weigh 200 and your wife weighs 150 then that only leaves you with 100 pounds of any additional cargo in the cab or in the bed! In the event that you happen to calculate these weights wrong and end up over any of the weight restrictions and you are involved in a fatal accident God forbid, you could be charged with vehicular manslaughter for being negligent driving an over weight vehicle regardless if the accident is your fault or not.

    I purchased a Tacoma TRD 4WD with V6 4.0 engine 9 years ago for $31000, i though the V6 is good enough for me hence the better gas mileage, but how wrong i was, my gas mileage average is 18 mpg, the Tundra is actually about the same with V8, now I'm going to buy a toy hauler with 5790 lb dry weight and my Tacoma can only tow 6500 lb with transmission cooler and towing pkg, towing expert told me not to exceed 80% of the maximum towing weight or the transmission and engine won't last long like Duf mentioned the high rpm cruising speed, the price difference is only $1500 for the Tundra V8 and it can easily tow 8000lb and up, so i might have to trade my Tacoma for a Tundra.

    • @Duf
      @Duf  6 лет назад

      Well that is a big reason that Camping World told me I needed the expensive 10,000 pound rated stabilizing hitch. The Tacoma is certainly no full size truck but it is pretty substantial. Just for reference a Tacoma curb weight is between 4000 and 4500 pounds depending on equipment. A full size Ford F150 is rated at 4050 to 5200 pounds curb weight depending on equipment. So yes there is a difference but it is not huge.

    I’m not here to criticize at all. I believe in using skill and towing sense to accomplish things that might be dangerous with a novice. So, bravo there.
    But with that said, on most (all) towing vids I see people refer directly to max tow poundage for reference as to what their truck is capable of.
    Those max tow ratings are calculated with a certain minimum of frontal area such as a utility trailer hauling bricks or firewood.
    Frontal area of a travel trailer calculated in, the max tow rating probably drops 30% at least, before a headwind. A Tacoma will have no trouble with a 16ft utility trailer and a cord or green oak which would be comparable weight to the travel trailer. But the travel trailer is far more taxing on the drivetrain at road speed. And, the heavy utility would have almost no reaction to side winds, whereas the travel trailer tries to take the truck with it.

  • @sirkingdra

    Definitely do your safety chains up properly next time before going on the open road. Plus I would never consider a 1/4 ton truck as a tow vehicle personally. That trailer will have you whipping all over the road in any sort of cross wind, even with stabilizer bars. Both my dad and my brother each own a Tacoma and neither one of them could stand up to pulling grunt power to my F350. 1/4 ton trucks should stick with tiny boat trailers and tent trailers, leave the travel trailers to at least a 1/2 ton.

    • @Duf
      @Duf  6 лет назад

      I hear you and admit it is less than ideal. However in the very limited, flat, short distance towing I would be doing with the Taco I am fairly confident that I will be fine.

    • @victorurbina2944
      @victorurbina2944 6 лет назад +1

      sirkingdra I dont think that the Tacoma is even considered a 1/4 ton truck. I have a Chevy silverado 1500 with a longer wheelbase and bigger engine and I tow my 28 foot travel trailer just fine. That Tacoma is just not enough truck for that camper. Period!

    • @sirkingdra
      @sirkingdra 6 лет назад +1

      victor urbina I just assumed it was a 1/4 ton, similar to a Ford Ranger or a Chevy S10/Colorado or Dodge Dokota. The Tundra is Toyotas 1/2 ton and the Tacoma is smaller so I figured it'd be considered a 1/4 ton. My dad and brother both own Tacoma's but dad only tows his 14' 300 lbs aluminum fishing boat with his, we leave all the serious grunt power to my 2001 F350 :)

    • @victorurbina2944
      @victorurbina2944 6 лет назад

      sirkingdra no harm buddy. I've always hear them referred to those model trucks as mid size trucks then you have you 1/2 tons that start the full size pick up range. But hey, call it what you want. As long as you're happy with it towing short distances. But in my honest opinion that tow vehicle is too small for that travel trailer. I would go with a 1/2 ton minimal with the max tow package. You can go with a 3/4 ton but I dont think that's necessary unless you're towing very long distances. If that's the case I would suggest a 3/4 ton diesel.

    4500 rpm is too high. Towing my 28' RV trailer (6400 dry) at 60-62 mph I can keep it in overdrive RPM's around 1750. With the tow-haul in gauged. (2014 Tundra with the 5.7). You will have to play around with it to lower your RPM's. If I try to push it to say 65-67 mpg, yes the RPM's go up to 2200-2300 range, gas mileage goes down.

  • @HP.Customs

    So the truck can tow 6600 and the trailer is 5600. Put on the hitch you just bought, you, the wife and all of the stuff you are going to put in it and that puts you at maxed or over the weight of your truck. If DOT pulls you over you will not be able to move if the trooper is a ass. Countless other things that aren’t safe but I’m not here to preach.

    • @Duf
      @Duf  6 лет назад

      If you look at the comments you will see people with much different thoughts with several examples of trucks like mine pulling similar loads successfully and repeatedly. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in the video but any towing of the trailer I do will be limited in distance and few in number.

    • @HP.Customs
      @HP.Customs 6 лет назад

      Dufisthenics I completely understand, will it tow it yes it will. But if it comes down to a legal standpoint DOT will have a issue with it. Just remember that when you do tow it you are rolling the dice legally. I’m not knocking anything you have just be safe. Love the color of the truck also.

    • @Duf
      @Duf  6 лет назад

      So what exactly would the DOT flag me for? If the truck is rated to tow 6600 and the loaded trailer weight is under that, what is the violation? We are aware we are at the top end of the limit and would pack accordingly. For instance during my test tow we made sure all holding tanks were essentially empty.

    • @HP.Customs
      @HP.Customs 6 лет назад

      Dufisthenics the truck is rated for 6600 total tow weight the trailer is 5600, you have to add you, the wife, hitch, personal belongings and other miscellaneous items will put you over that weight rating of your truck. Remember the cost is 1$ a pound overweight from DOT. I weighed just my truck and trailer at a CAT scale then did so while I was on my camping loaded up and everything extra put me 1300lb heavier. Me, Wife, little one, cloths so on and so on. I have the same camper you do but I tow it with a crew cab Ford F-150 eco boost.

    • @tsafa
      @tsafa Год назад +1

      No way a trooper is going to know what the max towing capacity is on a non-commercial truck. There's so many pickup trucks on the road and even within the same model, things like two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, crew cab effect the max tow capacity.
      The best a trooper would be able to determine is if the trailer itself is 10,000 lb gross or not. If it's over 10,000 pounds then you need an upgraded driver's license. That's the most that any Troopers going to be able to determine on a non-commercial.
