Game 2 and 3 were literally single possession games in crunch time
I feel like everything is always all or nothing. People that were saying Luka is better than Jokic is too much, but saying he sucks now is even worse.
I think Luka drops to 3rd behind Giannis who is an elite defender while also being a monster on offense he is also a champion

I don’t know if he ever passed Giannis. Healthy Giannis is better than Luka, Embiid, and SGA IMO. The Dame and Doc Rivers saga overshadowed his greatness to a degree this season.

When he won in 21 the league was weak, nowhere near the level 22, 23, 24.

I don't understand how people miss the fact the Luka plays the whole game with almost no breaks. If Mavs wouldn't lose every second he is off the floor, they would be able to reduce his minutes. Then his efficiency in 4th quarter or effort on defense would be better. Just 3rd capable guard instead of THJ/Hardy that can give 10-12 points and rule the offense. Kidd continued to use Doncic whole playoffs for 40 minutes per game despite the injuries, no management was done. But Luka will be called out of shape anyway.

I've been saying for 3 years now since he was not able to make it out of the first round. His play style is not a winning formula. We've seen it with James hardens career

Harden constantly folds in playoffs games and cannot close out games for shit, Luka has already taken the team to a Finals and had multiple signature playoffs moments at 25... If you swap Tatum with Josh Hart, the Celtics might still be up 3-0. If you swap Tatum with Luka, the Mavericks would've been a play-in team.
a) A CP3 hamstring not getting pulled would probably have won a ring for Harden in 18 and b) If Luka did not run into what is essentially a superteam in the Finals it might be different. (How many future HoFers on Boston you think? 3? 4? 5? I'd guess 4, with Jrue and Horford probably making and Brown Tatum being sure things. Probably not Porzingis, since he's too rbeakable) If the Mavs get swept it is not a referendum on Luka. He has been the best player in the playoffs and every megastar ever has had bad games. Every single one. I remember Bird, Magic and Jordan stinkers. Moses stinkers. Kareem stinkers.

I'd say the Celtics are underrated AND they are built to compete against top heavy teams that rely on the double team.

Luka is symbiotic with his team. Know when luka's defense isn't a problem? When his roleplayers are hitting open shots and doing what they are supposed to do. When the roleplayers aren't playing well he feels like he needs to shoulder everything on offense to give the team a chance. He becomes disengaged. When the team is on, he's tries more on defense cause he feels the team trying. Seen it so many times throughout his time in dallas.
I mean he was just lauded for his defense in the first 3 rounds... so... are we just erasing him leading a team past 3 50 win teams to get to the finals? as great as Jokic is (and he is, without question), no one brings up the fact he has yet to beat a 50 win team in the playoffs... Luka beats 3 of them, gets a team that most had missing the playoffs to the finals as a 50 win team with massive injuries and now b/c his poor defense (yep it's been bad) and his complaining (which is an issue, but in this series is mostly game 3) ppl should turn on him? I don't remember too many 25yo guys leading a team to the finals that lose to a heavy favorite get so much criticism.

Everybody in their heart of hearts knew the Celtics were likely (more than a coin toss) going to win because if they didn't how could they possibly get any better when they did just short of GSW adding Durant Although you could could make the case that Holiday + Porzingis has had the same impact as Durant to GSW. I think most of the criticism of Luka is unwarranted because nobody reacted this way when Lebron got swept iby the Spurs or when Boston lost to GSW (they did get shit for losing to Miami). Lets not overreact here, give Boston their roses and appreciate that 25 year old got his 5th seeded team to the finals (valid criticism or not that shit is true).
The difference is nobody was complaining about effort on defense for LeBron or the Celtics they were complaining about not making their shots or not making smart decisions. But they weren't complaining about effort on defense. Nobody was going to tell you that the Celtics problems were from a lack of effort and certainly nobody was going to say that from about LeBron James. Now it is true of course that the criticism becomes hyperbolic and overly simplified though. But there is legitimate room for criticism of Luca literally complaining while there's a finals game going on and he isn't playing defense while he is complaining to the refs or his own bench

Talented for sure but a lot of his numbers are a product of his use rate and that style of play is almost never going to be as productive as a team that actually moves the ball around.
I’m pretty sure the turn on Luka started to happen the second half of last season lol. There was a brief stint through the playoffs here where everyone flipped, but things have since returned to how they were before

If you swapped Tatum & Luka Celtics still sweep. If Tatum went to Dallas & Luka was on neither team I'd take Boston. If you gave Dallas Tatum it'd probably be a close series but I'd still take Boston

It really comes down to the media (and fans) disregarding the Celtics due to their conference.
They figured, "oh the east sucks, so the Celtics aren't that good". Now that take has been disproven and these people want to save face, so they basically turned on Luka. If you blame Luka for not playing well, then you were correct about the Celtics and it's just Luka letting you down. Classic coping technique.
This happens every year. Yes, the West is absolutely loaded. It is the better conference, but none of that matters if the best team is in the East. Ultimately, being the best team is what matters, not whether you had a tougher road. People need to understand that.
Right I mean I think the basic point that he complains too much and doesn't play good enough defense is true but what is mostly happening here is an aggressive course correction because all these people aren't embarrassed that they all chose the Mavericks.

The turn... more like endless revolution. Can you win with Heliocentrism? Is Luka Doncic James Harden? Is he reason enough to pick the 50-win Mavs over the 64-win Celtics with a historically great point differential in the Finals? Is he poised to take the "Best Player Alive" belt? Is he a whiny , traffic cone on the verge of a sweep who's no more conducive to winning it all than Carmelo Anthony? All these media narratives and more on Luka in just the past two weeks.

That guy single handedly carried a bunch of very mediocre dudes to NBA finals. In the finlas TEAM basketball succeded. But it's not Luka's fault. I think everyone forgot that he is just a player on what is supposed to be a team.
Today I learned that Luka is the only star player that complains to refs.
No team in history gets so much criticism for not winning pretty enough in the Finals (and throughout the playoffs). Listening to people like you, one would think they blew games 2 and 3, as opposed to did enough in the end to win it. They are up 3-0 in a Finals that a majority of NBA fans and a large percentage of media members picked them to lose despite having the best record in the NBA by 7 games. It is baffling, if you just don't like the Celtics come out and say it.
The bigger story is how this series is just incredibly boring. The games are close, but i could care less about who wins for some reason. We all know boston is great. We all know Dallas has a fantastic looking future. Thats about the only 2 stories at the end of the day.

He is exhausted, world cup in summer and September, than whole season and injured during the play-offs. Not an excuse for wining - but he is like that and will not change. I still belive that he will win championship - this is learning part to better care about his body and to take time off during the off season. I think he not realistic about his chances of winning , he never give up, plays injured, than get frustrated. I think Mavs need slightly better role players 1-2 and they will be ready.

You don't seem to understand the TV business model: a) get people to watch their network (and so eyeballs on ads) and b) get people to watch more games or longer in a given game. The rest is just them trying to game that. The arguments on ESPN to to attract eyes when they don't have a sport product to offer you. Again, ad revenues.

The part where people are blaming Luka for the losses is the unfair part. He's getting nothing from the role players and Kyrie didn't show up til game 3 . Not to mention he has multiple injuries he's playing through and the chest contusion seems to be affecting his ability to move. But he's still putting up 30 point triple doubles . Most players don't win the finals on their first try . Criticisms are valid but putting the 0-3 hole on him and saying he can't win are taking it too far

How come nobody criticizes Luka for carrying around an extra 15-20 lbs that is certainly not helping his defense. Seems like a lack of discipline and immaturity other players like Zion get called out for, but he doesn't. Dude is looking bloated out there....

100% agree. The idea that extra fat helps you in basketball is ridiculous. He'd have much better lateral movement and obviously better endurance. He can get away with it because he is so skilled.
Luka is in the finals and conference finals twice in three years. Zion has not got past 1st round in playoffs. That's the difference.

Lou Dort is 220 lbs at 6'4". He's a tank who can usually throw players off by being so heavy. But it didn't work against Luka specifically because Luka has 10 lbs on him. Being taller wouldn't help Luka much if he could just keep getting pushed around.
McDaniels is 2" taller than Luka and has a massive wingspan, which makes him a defensive nightmare. But Luka was able to offset that height difference by using his weight. He backed McDaniels down all series and there was nothing he could do about it.
I was counting terrible Tatum shot selection. 5 alone bad 3 point shots. Terribly inefficient though he does hit those at some clip. Mindlessly dumb.

Arguing calls while your team is on D is the original sin in ANY sport.
Beyond that, Luka’s ball dominance is detrimental to the overall team offense. Yeah he gets crazy numbers and makes great reads, but it cannot be easy to be a role player on his team. I think there is something to be said for his style diminishing his teammates contributions.
Reminds me of the narrative about Jordan pre 1991. That he needed to learn to trust his teammates and play within the offensive scheme more in order to win.
Have you ever seen these role players try to attack without Luka or Kyrie? Even in the regular season against teams like the spurs they look like a headless chicken.
You start out fine & then drop your into complete ignorance. The Mavericks have two guys who are capable of attacking the rim, Luka & Kyrie. Hardy is getting better but the rest lose the ball in 75% of their drives. If you want to get on Luka for the whining, fine. It’s a shame how quickly the media & “fans” forget this & act like the Mavs haven’t accomplished anything. Boston is the better team. They have 5 legit All-Star caliber players. The Mavs have two. Let’s remember that Tatum had lots of problems in his first finals. Hell, Devin Booker gets compared to Kobe by people & he completely disappears in elimination games, unless he’s down 3-0. Without Luka, the Mavs are the Wizards.
He is not ball dominant - it is circumstances , basically none of the role players can create. Exum a little bit but he is nowhere to be found in the play offs.

@@Kizamusic I have rarely seen a team where nearly every role player fumbles to ball as much as the Mavs do. I like the team but they need at least a third guy who can create consistently who are better than Hardy. Jones, Washington, & Green look like they should be able to but man they either turn it over, take awkward shots, or get stuffed by defenders nearly every time.

He played good defense through the whole playoffs until after the chest injury. So I mean what do you want the guy to do. He’s playing on a bum knee, bad ankle, and chest injury. 99% of players would be sitting. We saw all kinds of stars sitting in playoffs. Lukas played every game.

It's not about giving a pass. It's about being realistic and not overreacting. We heard it before. Luka defense and style doesn't work in the play offs. Hes not. He's having a better playoff run. Brown will most likely get the finals mvp for doing so. Bringing Tatum/Brown/Holiday/White man up to screen is a waste of time, they just gonna switch it and force you into iso ball without the need for the defence to get into rotation. Only so many difficult shots you can make in a game. It's Horford and KP man who gonna be brought up tune and time again, forcing them out of the paint. Mavs are obsessed with the wrong thing. The man who's setting the screen on your side, isn't as important as the guy defending it on the other.
