  • One can hear the passion in Heifetz' violin playing, even if his stance was impassive.

    Jascha Heifetz, a child prodigy violin player, was taught to present himself passively to better focus attention on the music. This does not mean the music played by one of the world's greatest violinists didn't resonate with passion, as experts and fellow musicians attest to in this excerpt from American Masters - Jascha Heifetz: God's Fiddler. Watch archival footage of Heifetz playing.

    My grandfather, a violinist who met Heifeitz and watched him play, responded to such criticism concerning 'cold playing' by saying "Heifetz needn't smile as he plays, for a blind man could tell that the world is alight when that man draws his bow." What my grandfather really meant was that Heifetz may not have smiled outwardly to those watching, but through his music and the beautiful sound he produced came a happiness and expression of joy that no musician has, or ever will, recreate. What we owe Heifetz is a limitless debt of gratitude, as will our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all who proceed them.

    One should look at the bow arm, not funny faces. That is the most expressive bow arm I've ever seen. And that sound, it gives me goosebumps.

    I definitely see emotion on his face while he was playing. I think it was when he wasn't playing that he seemed lifeless and cold.

    If I am to watch and not only listen to violin playing, I prefer when a violinist's body movements and facial expressions are not distracting the attention from the music. I think whoever criticized Mr. Heifetz for looking too cold or reserved completely missed the point.

    When I was a kid, I thought Heifetz sounded more like a technician than a musician. However I'd never seen him play before, and it was before RUclips. As I got older I completely changed my perception, and he's now one of my favourite violinists (I know I was wrong before). But my point is, maybe it's not his appearance that leads people to think he's cold. Maybe his style of playing doesn't connect to some, or he's an acquired taste.

      Listen to HH playing bach. You will hear equal precision, but you will not hear Heifetz.
      And who wants an imitation of a master? I marvel at how different they can all sound, but still they are all perfect.

🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌

    Heifitz always plays pieces without emotion and way to fast.

  • @davidalvarez297
    @davidalvarez297 3 года назад

    Heifetz is overrated indeed. It is NOT THE FACT that he doesn't smile while playing. It is the way he plays. No smart rubatos, no dynamics, just trying to achieve fast passages without difficulties, and that's it. Trills and vibrato is static also...
