vassal swarm is the eternal meta
From my testing, drill doesn't effect assaulting. They don't actually do shock and fire damage, even though they care about base shock value (not not modifiers) and deal damage in 3-day phases. Normal combat modifiers don't do anything for assaults, outside of morale. I only did a couple dozen tests, I don't think actual calculations are in the accessible scripts/code like events and setup is, so I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't use any combat modifiers like discipline, tactics, combat ability, shock damage received, etc. Morale matters, shock from tech matters, I didn't check unit types/pips, leader pips, or siege pips.
Janissaries have 50% assault ability. Drill would show + assault ability if it had any effect on assaults. That assault ability has a noticeable effect like nothing else I tested.

Those aren't allies.... They're vassals. Elyats can only join wars if you call them in.

I agree, 15 years in and barely any progress, lots of downtime when he's not at war. There just isn't the admin efficiency this early in the game to allow some kind of last minute exponential expansion.
He completed this challenge on twitch already - he makes it with 2 years to spare@@Chickidydow
