Huge march over ticket office closures

  • The fury of both railworkers and the public over proposed ticket office closures was shown on the eve of the closure of the sham public "consultation", with a huge march from the Department of Transport to Downing Street.
The Government wants to close nearly 1,000 ticket offices - including big stations like Birmingham New St and Manchester Piccadilly - with the loss of 2,300 jobs. It will particularly hit millions of disabled people, the elderly, people who can't afford broadband and others who have difficulty with online apps and ticket machines. And unlike ticket office staff, who will tell you the cheapest ticket for your journey, the machines will sell you the most expensive ticket.
Ticket office staff are also crucial for providing access, informing people of changes to accessibility, and helping people who need assistance for their journey.
It comes on top of the ongoing national disputes over working conditions, pay, and jobs - and today all three transport unions (RMT, ASLEF and TSSA) were united in their determination to stand together and fight to stop these appalling plans.
You can help by signing the petition to force a Parliamentary debate at petition.parli..., lobbying your MP and councillors, and by joining the picket lines in the national disputes.

I am a pensioner I have fractured my left arm I have got a plaster. The other week I had to take my niece to hospital the lady at the ticket office could not have been more helpful given me vital information as to how I could get a cheaper ticket and told me to take my time we really need these ticket offices A ticket machine can't give me that help.
