    Thank you for taking the time to answer! I just switched over from a very plastic Zoom R16 to the Sturdy feeling DP24. I worked the Zoom to death. Some of the inputs no longer work and I can easily move tracks to the "broken" channels but I thought the time is right to move onto to something new. The drag and drop convenience on the Zoom caused some hesitation to move to the DP24 but as you've kindly demonstrated in your videos there are do many beneficial features on the Tascams. I read of people believing the Tascams are complicated but within 15 minutes after unboxing, I had a complete four-minute song recorded with vocal, guitar, bass, and drums recorded live in one go. Unfortunately that has been the only chance I've had to use it so far.
    One thing I did notice in the comparison with the Zoom is the audio quality. It is different. After years on the Zoom, I've become use to how it sounds. There is an audible difference but I haven't had a chance to figure out if one is more personally favorable over the other. What I kind of suspect is that the Tascam is superior and what I am hearing is how bad my room sounds and how inadequate I have mics placed and outboard gear like compressors set😂 . When I return home I look forward to getting to know the Tascam better. Until then I will gather some further education watching vids like yours and combat frustration watching inadequate people trying to "teach" people badly. Btw...I like the music you do that I've heard as backing tracks in your videos. Very cool stuff. I'll try to send you a tip soon. Stay well!

      @@tc66I haven't switched, but for many things that I do (record a full band, etc.). The extra inputs and ease of use of the Model 24 really helps. Another thing I personally have an issue with, (as one who's new to searching for a multi-track recorder)...and I nearly made a mistake...but people keep calling a Tascam DP-24/32, a DP-24SD or a DP-32SD...and those models are definitely (not the same)! Why? The DP-24/ or DP-32 (please correct if wrong) but they come with a built-in CD burner...the DP-24SD and the DP-32SD (do not come with the CD burner)! People need to be clear about that!

    • @MikeFoerster
      @MikeFoerster  3 года назад +1

      Yes, that is true, but for me writing out DP24/32/24SD/32SD is a lot for a title of a video. Except for the two things that you mentioned, the machines work the same way. I don't know about the file structures but I do know that they function the same.

Before buying the wrong thing.

Then someone may just overlook what was actually said! Case in point, The Tascam 32 recorder, isn't the same as The Tascam 32 (SD). If nobody makes that clear, then I, and others, could have gone out and purchased, a Tascam 32, and get it home... only to find out, it's the wrong model, and be pissed off! And since no one can hear my comment,.. but only read, my comment... that's why () become necessary! Furthermore, as you can tell in my comment, I got tired of looking for info about The Tascam 24/32... Then waist time watching a video,... Only to find out, later, that the video isn't what it's listed as! So yes, I use () as hope people don't overlook my points in comments... like (Thank you)!

    I have a question about recovering unused song data. I understand how to delete unused song data that you have recorded over doing retakes etc. The other night I brought my Tascam DP32 to a gig to get a live recording. Got all set up and played the first set. I forgot that the unit would turn itself off after being in stop mode when we were on break. We came back from break and I turned the unit back on and we recorded our 2nd set. However, I incorrectly assumed that the unit would start recording again where we left off on the counter at the end of the first set. It started over from the beginning on the counter so that we recorded over the 1st set. I know that underneath our 2nd set recording is the 1st set. Apparently it exists in a land called: "Unused Song Data". I know how to delete it to regain recording space but I want to recover it if I can. Can that be done and if so how? Does anyone know?

    • @MikeFoerster
      @MikeFoerster  3 года назад +1

      When you say, sync, do you mean hooking up your DAW to cakewalk and using it like an audio interface? If yes, you can't do that with the DP24, the USB system is only a file transfer system. If you are looking for something like that, you'll have to look at the Model series by TASCAM. • @MikeFoerster
      @MikeFoerster  3 года назад

      I don't know what you mean by a benefit to using mono. You can't plug a hard drive into the machines. The USB port when connected to a computer acts as an external drive so you can copy and paste files back and forth onto the SD card instead of taking out the SD card.

    • @mrg466
      @mrg466 3 года назад

      @@MikeFoerster what I mean by what's the benefit of a mono track,... Doesn't mono mean it's only on one side, and stereo is both left and right? Or do I have that wrong? Because I hear that some tracks are specifically mono, and others are stereo. I see no purpose for a sound to come out only on one side of a speaker,... Which is why I asked that question. As for the hard drive question,... Let's say the card is either full, or damaged, therefore an external hard drive, plugged into a USB port, can be helpful if the unit does not come with a built-in hard drive.

    • @MikeFoerster
      @MikeFoerster  3 года назад

      Depending on how you record, chances are you are going to use mono tracks more. Vocals would be considered a mono track and keyboard would be stereo. You have the ability to pan the mono track left or right, I generally record vocals twice and then slightly pan them right and left for effect. I just went onto TASCAMs site, the the DP versions have a USB which you can hook up to a computer and copy all the files off. It's easy to do because each song project is a directory on the SD card to you copy it and if you need to put it back, you can copy the entire directory back. Now the smaller DP like the 8 track and 4 track models, they work differently, you need to execute a routine on the machine that'll make a file that you can copy off of the machine. I can't blame them for getting rid of the CD burner as most people will never use it (me being one of them), but the MIDI should have stayed.

      I've been recording on my first generation DP24 for 10 years now and it only froze once. Turns out I'd been using to same SD card for too long. After I would finish a bunch of different songs and burned them to CD-Rs, I'd reformat the SD card and start over. Eventually they can wear out. The one time my DP24 froze, I just put in a new SD card and everything worked just fine again. Although I did have to start over with the song I was working on when it froze. Ever since then I've burned a CD-R of every song I've recorded as soon as it's finished just to be safe. I also started using 32 gig SD cards instead of the lower memory cards like the one that came with the recorder when I bought it 10 years ago. I can't remember for sure because it was more than 5 or 6 years ago when my recorder froze, but I think I was still using the original 2 gig SD card that came with the unit. I've never had that problem again.

And I need it to have that distortion effect. Second problem is when I record lead guitar using effects that I like to hear effects while I record over a rock rhythm not a clean sound.Then I need to export that wave track with a clean sound (no effects)? • @MikeFoerster
      @MikeFoerster  4 года назад

      That one is a common mistake. When you record the first track and use the internal amp, you have to make sure that the effect is set to be used when recording. If it is set to playback, as soon as you switch to a different channel and use an internal effect it will go away from the original track. The second part is confusing me, but hopefully this is what you are asking. If you want to record with a clean sound, I suggest recording the same input to two different channels. I discuss it in this video: ruclips.net/video/QFuuMajA3lc/видео.html Then you have both the clean and the effected channels to play with.

      I don't think there would be much demand. For additional effects people like to use either 1) their existing racks of outboard gear (via send/return) or 2) export to a DAW and use their VSTs and such. And since those options are nfinitely more flexible than some predefined set of effects (no matter how large), and effects chains are so specific, both make more sense
