    The story of Lorcana is as follows: Release of the game was conservatively printed and was a hot game due to marketing and Disney popularity. Release set sold out everywhere due to player and scalper demand. Ravensburger promised to print to demand all sets and said after set three they would have higher print runs. People couldn't find any first set product except via scalpers and singles. Second set releases with the same print run but some of the wind has been taken out of the sails due to player fatigue trying to get first set. First set gets another emergency print run before the holidays and is consumed by the player base and scalpers still thinking there is money to be made. Third set comes out and while print runs are low product can be obtained relatively easy. Fourth set just released and print runs are high and Ravensburger has pivoted to add a single player mode for the game. You can walk into most big box stores and get sealed product for any set.

    I think Lorcana prices stabilized because more people play the game like MTG than collecting like pokemon. When cards get power creeped, older cards get left behind.
    What Lorcana is doing with promo prize awards is really smart as well. Promos are actually rare and desirable, unlike enchanted which can be reprinted and hoarded to death.
    First chapter still holds price and value because it was the first. Set 2 not as good as set 3, and set 3 not as good as 4. People actually playing the game is making the prices this way. Lorcana is doing a great job making a long lasting TCG.

    I’m not a fan boy of lorcana but if boxes you say are $109 for 24 packs and it’s a bad thing. On the other hand FAB is probably around the same price or less for the same size box but I get that you feel that is a good thing. Am I missing something. Magic play booster are $150 I’d say on the extreme high end for a 36 pack box. That makes those cheaper than lorcana. So is magic still way over printing box?

  • @SnapquesterMage
    @SnapquesterMage 3 месяца назад +35

    As someone who spent the better part of the last 20 years with Magic, the product overload burnout already kind of drove me away from competitive Magic. Last fall, I discovered Lorcana and have been engrossed every since. I love the game. Between the ink and song mechanics and well as balance between board control and win condition, it has taken a proven core of Magic-like gameplay and added enough to feel fresh AND offer TONS of new decision trees in gameplay.
    A lot of its price stability now seems to be the same reason BFZ helped stabilize prices. The chase Enchanted cards (and foil meta Legendaries) help keep most cards reasonable, while maintaining hundred dollar chase cards. It may not be perfect, but it's pretty good so far. And I'm having a blast.

      What originally drew me in was the fact that it was mechanically so similar to Magic, but with really interesting tweaks (songs/ink). However, the Disney flavor is what made me stick it out. I think if it was just some other random fantasy game, I probably wouldn't have gotten into it as much as I have.
      Currently I have nearly foiled out versions of multiple staple decks. And play League Nights (equivalent of FNM) at least once a week.

If the boxes are 500 the game dies because normal people wouldn't be able to afford it. You can't have a successful and thriving game like that you silly jabronis. 😂
    The singles market is driven by player / tournament demand. If you kill competitive play the boxes then have no value since demand for singles would collapse.

    First chapter boxes stable and climbing to $240 after the big restock dropped them to retail (retail $140 store cost $92)? Multiple 2k Tournaments being sold out everywhere with up to $65k prizing for a top 8 finishers? Local championship cards going for $500 plus? Seems like a steady climb to me. Product for sets 3-4 available widely at most big box retailers so it's hitting that traditional $110 a box while set 2 is climbing because it's no longer available. I think RB has had a great start. Like you, I also don't think it's going anywhere. Oh ya, the game is fun and the community is good. BTW for collectors opening a booster box isn't a complete slaughterhouse (looking at you Pokemon) as some Meta cards give decent value in return.

    There has been a lul in Lorcana due to Disney serving a cease and desist on the fan made online client Pixelborn. Sealed prices have stabilized and Enchanted cards have come down. One big missed fact about Disney Lorcana is the price and demand for promotional product. No game in my 20 years of playing games has had the demand or prices on promotional product like Lorcana. The top 4 (8) Gold Mickey Mouse is 10k+, the top 16 (32) card is 3-4K+, the top 64 (128) promotional card is $800-1K. Simply due to the collectability of Disney, the investment will remain decent to strong in my opinion. Lorcana is Pokemon 25 years too late but the popularity of Disney has always been very high. I think its potential is very underrated. This is a long term play with no guarantee. Only time will tell and Rudy has a very reasonable approach in his take.

    WARNING, THIS IS AN HYPOTHESIS.
    The lack of madness and the stabilization of Lorcana might come from an extra-market cause.
    Disney has been fucking us sore with any franchise or license they touched for the past 15 to 20 years. Aside of the unconditionnals. the confidence in Disney seems to be at the lowest point I've seen in my lifetime (I'm 41).
    It's likely that this defiance might have scared most of the jackals and flippers, thus keeping the market relatively player-oriented.
    I hate Disney with fervor since I'm 7, but I'll admit that Lorcana looks good as cards go, let's hope Disney won't fuck up again by being their usual greedy selves.

      Imho the 5th set announced within a year is a proof they want to milk it fast and dry. :)
      I lkind of ike Lorcana as a refreshment from FaB and Sorcery - if only for the colorful cards. It’s a game to play with kids at home, I’m not comparing it to others meant for competitive play or for some very strategic experience. It’s good for people new to TCGs too, thanks to intended simplicity.
      We bought 2 boxes from each set so far plus starters which pretty much has a good chance to have each normal version of each card from the set possible at least once - in context of TCGs that’s not that bad from player / small collector standpoint (meaning possible easily to achieve 204/204, not playsets or god forbid full set playsets in foil incl enchanted).

      Plenty of adults play the game as well, like me. As for the cost, Ravensburger made it clear that they are selling a GAME. The Enchanteds are certainly chase cards and very much collectable, but that in and of itself doesn't create demand or value.
      With time, I expect that the Enchanteds, promos, and prize support cards will raise in price. The cards used for the game, even the Legendaries, will ebb and flow as the meta changes, as it does with any card game with a healthy playerbase and developed meta. But nobody should be buying boxes of this stuff hoping to double their money in a year.

    The game is doing exactly the opposite of what I expected. Because the chase cards are kinda meh and expensive meh pack opening experience, collectors don't honestly care as much as I expected. Meanwhile, the player base seems strong with Magic players who grew tired of Hasbro. Very interesting dynamic

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ 3 месяца назад +1

      I wouldn't say that the Enchanteds are "meh," but you're certainly entitled to your own opinion. Now if you specifically mean Disney collectors, then yeah, I could see that. I believe that general card collectors like myself have been more than happy with the Enchanteds.
      As for the cost of opening packs, it's $6 for a single booster or usually right at $5 for a box. You can probably get a case.for under $5 per pack. I'm not sure what card game you're playing that has cheaper packs than that, especially seeing as how Wizards just raised their prices again, and One Piece is still pricey.
      I can tell you that the gameplay loop is extremely addictive, and VERY reminiscent of old school Magic. There are definitely some questionable design issues, like no maximum hand size. There also seems to be a very "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" thing going on with some of the cards, as they are literally just old Magic designs like A Whole New World, which is Wheel of Fortune but even stronger.
      That said, there are meta decks that the community were rallying around during the Pixelborn days. But none of those decks were unbeatable without spending tons. You could very easily put together a budget deck and just be the better player and win a game. There is a lot of flexibility in deck design, and seemingly an answer for every new meta threat that is found.
      Overall, it reminds me a lot of the old WoW TCG, but better. I loved that game more than Magic at the time, and now I feel the same way about Lorcana with current Magic. It's a shame really, because Hasbro did this to themselves.

    Lorcana cards collect dust at my local Wal-Mart. Ravensburger was greedy. They thought they could just copy and paste what Bandai did and would be successful. Shortprint everything, drive up demand and scalpers and fear of FOMO, and ride the money rainbow to crown town. And to be honest, the Bandai strategy is horrible for kids or the casual collector who just wants to own a few cards. They have to compete with the scalpers and resellers and 'professional gamers' who will sleep outside stores until they get restocked and then buy out everything that comes in. But Ravensburger screwed up in a few more ways. They thought they could leverage their premium license with Disney to charge a few dollars more per booster and people would pay it to own a Mickey Mouse card. They were wrong. And they designed boosters that are the least fun to open in practically any TCG on the market at the moment. Boosters need to have lots of shiny and pretty cards to make them exciting to open, so once you do jump through the hoops of fighting off the hordes of scalpers and resellers, you can bask in the glory of your full-art foil glossed signature fancy card. Every Lorcana pack has a foil version of a card, but it's usually just commons and uncommons, so it feels cheap. And then only the highest rarity card, Enchanted, comes foil guaranteed, and you're not even guaranteed an enchanted card in a booster box. It's just all a recipe to be underwhelmed when you finally crack that booster box open and walk away with a bunch of non-foil cards, a few foil commons.
    Personally, I like having access to cards. I like seeing them at my local Wal-Mart and not having to order exclusively from TCGPlayer. I like not having to pay double or triple MSRP for every item that releases. The Bandai model has been horrible for the casual collector or player. And as someone who started playing TCGs when the Pokemon TCG released, I remember how Toys'R'Us had bins full of booster packs available. People wanted the cards because they were cool, not because they could resell them on eBay for triple MSRP. I remember walking into my LGS and seeing the new Naruto TCG and buying packs whenever I wanted, not ever having to worry about the store only getting in a few boxes and them being sold exclusively to pre-ordering customers and then there being nothing to sell in store. I wish we could go back to the old way TCGs were. Let MTG be the card game where long-term value matters. Let new card games be fun to collect, fun to play, and easy to find and purchase. Perhaps if new TCGs were this way, they'd have a better chance of being as successful as Pokemon was. Instead, we're going to see more Lorcanas. Flash in the pans. Once scalpers lose interest in them, the casual collector has already given up months ago and moved on. I hate to see it.

    All Ravens need to do is have a banger set. I see this following the OP path. OP 1 through 4 were ok sets. Once OP-05 hit is when it really took off. At that time people were calling Op-05 the "Evolving Skies" of One Piece. Multiple Mangas, Beautiful SP cards, anniversary cards, and even a signed card. Evo Skies, the same with multiple Alt Arts. If I owned Lorcana that would be the first move I make around set 6 or 7. Second smart move for Ravens would be to fully redesign their cards. Add flare, better holos, signed cards, hell even serialized cards. Right now Lorcana has BEAUTIFUL cards that they unfortunately just giving out only at specific events. If those specific cards were in, say set 6, people would be going crazy to get their hands on boxes. I'll be the first one to tell you right now that I believe that all the Lorcana cards are boring to open, you can barley tell that a card is a holo, and are half assed designed. Make your "art" desirable and you will have more interest. What I love about One Piece, and I don't even like the IP, is the art style of each set differs from the last sets. Wanted Posters, Brilliant! Uber colorful SP cards, Brilliant! Calligraphy style drawings of characters, Brilliant! That's how OP is bringing people in that don't even care about the characters but they do care about beautiful art on cards

      I've never seen a box for less than $120, which is $5 a pack. It's pretty reasonable given today's current card game pricing. That $110 price almost certainly doesn't include shipping, or it's from a massive seller who bought insane amounts of product to be able to sell that low. I'd expect a full case to dip below $5 per pack, but not a single box.
