Let me give you some words of advise. Get some sheet lead and line those jaws with the lead. Clamping down on those gears with steel jaws will ruin some gears. The lead will cushion the gear while holding it stable.
I used ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4ynqaujg7rZKFapA8s29kTpRszJGa3-K this for the first time today to replace the front wheel bearing on my rwd 98 dodge dakota. This had absolutely no issue removing or reinstalling the lug nuts and it took off the axle nut without any struggle. Sounds like it's got some muscle to it. Time will tell
Open the chuck jaws. Remove the screw located in the centre. Fit a 3/8" (10mm) Allen key into the chuck and tighten with the chuck key. Smack the end of the Allen key with a hammer in an anti-clockwise direction and it will unscrew from the machine. Refitting is a reversal of this procedure. You do not have the split the drill body.
that method doesnt work with this particular model makita 6404 the shaft still spins in both directions when you put the allen key in it and there is no flat on the shaft for a spanner to hold it to smack it with a hammer. That model is about 40 years old.
Great Video! This is the only way to change the chuck if your drill spins too loosely to untighten the chuck the other way. The other way is tightening the chuck on a hex wrench and hitting it with a snap. My chuck was actually stuck in the open position so I couldn't tighten it on a hex wrench....this video saved my drill! Thanks.
Please dont try to hide your biggest mistakes, not taking any precautions and by damaging the main gear wheel by tightening in the vise.this is like penny wise pound foolish.😅
Desde colombia. Gracias por el video. Solo es que el tornillo que sujeta al mandril es rosca izqierda para que tomen nota y miren como gira el destornillador. Gracias vale.
Thanks for the video. If the video had been available many years ago I would have replaced the chuck on my old B&D. Replacement parts were more readily available and cheaper. These days the replacement chuck costs as much as a new drill so I would just toss the worn-out B&D and buy a new one.
The 'smack with a hammer' technique probably applies to older drills. I have a drill dating from about 2015 and wanted to remove the chuck. Unbeknown to me, there is a screw, left-hand threaded accessible with an Allen key placed into the fully open chuck. Old man with 'weak' hands that I am, trying to undo this screw as though it were normal RH, snapped said screw in two. Drill and driller are both fine but replacement LH screws are not that cheap or readily obtainable!
You don't clamp gear on a vice Steel to steel .you can use Taflon or copper in between To avoid damage the gear. To replace chunk today is not Profitable as too many cheap Chinese drilling machine on the market
My B/D drill with attachments to fix I just have to put bit tighten key & give it slight blow from a hammer to remove the chuck to fit attachments, eg. saw, orbital sander etc. No need to remove any screws or open the body cover.
First and foremost, you don't really need to pull out the gears in order to change the chuck. Looking at the damage on the collet gears, it seems that you are a rough user. This is further demonstrated by the way you clamped the gears directly to the vise. I am not surprised that you will soon be changing another chuck in a very near future.
Thanks for your time, but I don't disassemble the drill to disassemble the chuck, I have a used key that enters and blocks the axis and then I unscrew the chuck
It looks like you cheeched the teeth on that gear by clamping it unprotected in your vice. I could see the damage when you removed it. You need to put some wood, leather, or something else between the vise jaws and your workpiece to prevent marring.
you have seen the hard way now i will tell you the easy way place drill in vise open chuck insert screw driver turn clockwise to remove the screw insert the key in chuck give it a good (WACK) counter clockwise now unscrew old chuck add new chuck install scew counter clockwise you are thru a 5 min job..
No need to takeout output spindle and gear assembly to remove the chuck. Allen key and a strike with a hammer would have done the work 🙁. I replaced the chuck of my skil 13mm drill by the above method.
If you watch this video, be prepared to mute or silence the audio. The is no value to the crappy music. The screwdrivers used to remove the locking screws were never shown. Philips? Torx? Standard?
No need to remove the casing.put the key to the chuck and reverse use the hammer and you can remove the chuck.very simple only seconds to remove the chuck.
make sure the chuck is open like you are inserting a drill bit look in the back inside the chuck there is a screw that holds the chuck to keepit from unscrewing take it out clockwise
I have a 10 mm chuck fitted in my drill which I want to change to hold 13 mm Chuck which can be used for 13 mm bits. What I had to do for this conversion.?
Let me give you some words of advise.

Wood is also an option. Wooden plank.

R u not damaging the teeth of the cog, by clamping it directly on a vic?
yes not damage teeth of gear
That's what I thaught too. Personally I would have used a woodworkers vice or one that has wooden grips on it.

Yes. Maybe that's a really old drill and removing it is different. Modern drills you don't need to do that.
