Land & Sea: The fisheries cooperative on Fogo Island

In this archival Land & Sea episode from 1984, Paul Harrington looks at the fishery on Fogo Island where the cod come in early each spring. 1983 was an important year for the fishermen of Fogo Island and their cooperative, formed in the late 1960s when the community almost disappeared after the fishery hit rock bottom and the buyers left the island. The cooperative expanded its marketing system by starting its own label and got into new products such as crab after trouble in fish markets the previous year put the organization into a financial bind.
