- Can you put crocheted amigurumi toys in the washing machine and dryer?
Well to be honest I’m not sure, but this little guy is taking one for the team and he’s agreed to be our guinea to help us answer this question once and for all.

The fact that the little guys crocheted clothes are removable made my day 🥹
I'm so glad! 🐭🐭🐭
Hahahaha awww 🥹👌❤️
As if the mouse is getting ready for a bath x3
When my daughter was little, she had a Gymboree plush cat that she loved. One day she got sick all over it and her car seat. The toy label said to "wipe clean only", but I knew that would not get it really clean. I put it in the washing machine and dryer, it turned out fine. Seventeen years later, we still have it. I would suggest putting the toy in a lingerie bag or pillow case during washing, to keep it from getting fuzzy.
That's a great tip! Thanks so much for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I use a pillow case or lingerie bag also, especially if they have plastic eyes.
I normally just place my amigurumi in a pillow case and wash it with the rest of the clothes, then place them in the dryer on the cold setting
When you put something small in the dryer, throw in a dry towel and it will absorb some water and reduce the amount of time for the smaller item. You might have to dry the towel on its own for a couple minutes afterwards but better to over-dry a towel than your handmade items. I do this with my crochet washcloths.
Great tip!! Thank you for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
How brave was that little guy taking one for the team
He really was! 🐭
I use a mesh laundry bag to help keep them safe. So far so good...😊
That's a great idea! 🧶🧶🧶
Putting them in a pillowcase works too!
@@mae-pr7cf
Do/will they fall out during the cycle though?
@@superprincessx5 I just tie the pillow case in a loose knot to prevent them from falling out!
Yeah my sister in law should see this video lol. I made my niece a ballerina bear with sweet snuggles yarn. My sister in law made the mistake of washing it on hot to "sanitize" after she spilled juice on it and was really confused as to why the eye sockets loosened and the eyes fell out in the dryer on "heavy duty" lol. I was sooooo sad 🙈 she didn't bother to ask about care instructions. I remember telling her when I first gifted it. That was the day I stopped making plushies for gifts. Soooo much love goes into them ❤❤🥴
Oh no!!!!! The next time I gift a toy I think I'll add a little washing care card with them! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Yep, happened to a hand knitted pure wool cardigan I knitted for a friend's daughter. She washing it in the washing machine she put it in the dryer. I now include a label of the wool I used, so they can read the instructions. Also some people regard handmade items as cheap, giving the label, especially of expensive wool, might remind them, that just the material alone, has a value, let alone the time making it.
I'm impressed that the cheek blush didn't wash out!
Me too!!!! I couldn't believe it didn't come out!!! 🤯
Definitely needs a pillow case. It will protect the plastic eyes, nose...especially in the dryer!!!
Thank you for sharing! Good idea! 👍
Air fluff means no heat
Yes! 🧶🧶🧶
Congrats…little Buddy❣️. You look great!
Thank you 😁
Honestly I'd be more concerned about the filling than the yarn itself. I've had some bad experience with washing pillows 😅
Thanks for sharing! This guy turned out great! Could be that there's not a lot of stuffing in him! 🐭
Me too. Most yarn can take hand wash with cold water setting, which modern washing machines have, (except perhaps the cheapest models) and the same applies to cool/cold setting of a dryer. But I have never got a cheap pillow out of a washing machine without it at least becoming lumpy.
If it's made with a washable yarn and firmly packed with poly fiber stuffing then there's little reason not to wash it. Wool or exotic fiber yarn, non-colorfast yarn, or some other type of stuffing might not launder easily. Paint/makeup features might fade but stitched and safety features should also be ok.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Yaaay! He made it. Thank you for answering this question. ❤
Hi Elise,
Thank you for sharing…and thanks to the little Mousey mouse 🐭 for taking one for all the team! 🎉Yay! So glad he made it.
He’s very adorable 🥰
Take care and God Bless you always 🙏🏽🩷😻😻🧶🌷🪻
I was a little worried about him, but he insisted he would be fine! Thank goodness he was right!!! 🐭😅🧺
Thank God 🙏🏽🩷🐭🧶😻🐶🌷
I put them in washing bags.
That's a good idea! 🐭🧺❤️🧶
I was about to make this comment ❤❤❤
Wow.. thanks for that....I was stressing just watching, hahaha. Bon voyage 😂
I'm so glad😊 to see he made it!!!
Haha!!! Me too!! 🧺🤣🧶🧶😅
Yes in a pillow case and low/no heat in dryer
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet absolutely!! Also if you know anyone who has trouble keeping tension I'd love to suggest a hair tie. You put it over your middle finger and lay the yarn in front of the hair tie resting on your finger. Then you twist the hair tie once and loop it over your finger again. Its acts like a tension ring but chances are most of us have at least one random hair tie somewhere.
The way you throw the little guy in 😂
He is sooooo precious! ❤
Thank you so much! 🐭🐭🐭
@@EliseRoseCrochet I'm going to have to make this! My sons nickname is mouse and he would love this!
My kids get all my tester toys and they put them through tough times. I like to throw them in my towel load. I’ve put them in a laundry wash bag, a pillow case, and just tossed in and they’ve turned out fine. I don’t usually dry them in the dryer though. I like to lay them on top of it while a load is going. Occasionally one will get trapped in something and go through the dryer (usually highest setting for my towels) and it’s come out fine too. Some acrylics will become fuzzy though!
Thanks for sharing!! Great ideas!! 🧺
I use hand wash cycle for my plushie hoard. Not sure crochet from chenille or sth like that would survive the dryer but my plushies have been just fine on gentle tumbling mode
As long as your sewn stitches are well done enough and you’re careful about things like buttons/safety eyes you can! I’ve washed ones that I made for my kids multiple times and they’re still going strong 🥰 (I use acrylic yarn)
So cute 😂 he survived! Good boi
Haha!! I'm so glad he's ok! 🐭
Yay!!! I just noticed we have the same washer and dryer set lol
Haha!!! I love this washing machine! I used to have a front loader and I hated it! 🐭🧺🤣❤️🧶
I'm shook!!!
You will never know if he is growing inside. It is the perfect environment if it isn’t fully dry for mold or other things to grow.
Good point! That's why I put him in the dyer! 🧺🧶❤️
Phew! He survived 😅
😅😅😅 He was very brave! 🐭
I wash mine all the time because they are acrylic ❤
That's great!! 🧶🧶🧶
I had to wash mine that were made when I was little. They are still around looking awesome!
So good to know! 🧶
I think I might have put him in a laundry bag first but great news that he came out so good.
I think that would have been a good idea! 🧺
I mean, as long as you keep the cycle pretty cold you can wash most plushies
I always use a laundry bag with mine
Very good idea! 👍
I wash my amigarumi with blankets and have yet to have any issues. 100% acrylic yarn.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you for this i have been curious but too scared to try it 😂 but i do have a question do you think it would work for chunky yarn?
That's a good question! Do you have a project that you don't mind testing to see if it's washable? That's what I would do to make sure! 🧶🧶🧶
I think I can just make a little stuffed ball then see what happens 😂 thanks
@@sunshinecrocheterI think that's a great idea! ❤
My daughter puts some of the toys I’ve made for the littles through the wash and most come out okay 👍🏼
That's very good to know! 🧺❤️🧶
I use a laundry bag. I'm concerned about the filling 🤔. I would give him a gentle bath 🛁
It turned out great!! Much better than I expected! 🧶🐭🧺❤️
That not a guinea pig, that’s a mouse!
🐭🐭🐭
Me 5 seconds in : No Elise, please not the MOUSE!! Oh the humanity!!!
Me right at the end : Oh thank goodness!!! xD
🤣🤣🤣 I felt the same way!! 😅
You should’ve used laundry bag.
It protects your delicate
Good idea! 🧶🧶🧶
I recently washed a crochet toy (100% cotton - Sheepjes catona) in 90 C degrees (almost boiling water) and air dried it in a gentle cycle - and everything was fine!! It was a small toy. I would be affraid if there was a lot of stuffing.
I would have tried a garment bag
Key notes
Items were washed and dried alone.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
So far I haven’t bought anything AI. But the ideas are great. Just have to make a pattern myself to make the object. I use all my books to make parts so it gets close.
I work with full acrylics i always advise handwashing but in case of really dirty they can wash them at 40 lol
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Poor guy getting tossed into the washing machine 😂
Also if you want to just disinfect you can steam the toy :)
How do you know what is inside for stuffing and support if you didn’t make it yourself? Thinking of wooden dowel I used for the neck of a peacock
I would do the same with mine if it weren't for the fact that I love to use felt for facial features, sometimes I sew them on, sometimes I glue them. I'm just so scared that the edges of the felt will get ruined XS I guess that if the details are made with safety eyes of yarn as well, it should be fine.
For added security, place the little guys in a lingerie bag to launder.
That's a great idea!! Thanks for sharing! 🧺
Hi! I was wondering what's the best way to tint a toy (e.g. to add blush) so that it survives the washing? So far I've only used dry pastel and I'm scared to ever wash these😢
My jester hat was ruined from washing it.
Oh no!!!! 😥
Do you think this would work with a crochet toy rattle that has a wooden ring?
I'm not sure, but you might just try it! 🧶🧶🧶
I know acrylic doesn't like heat
What about that fluffy yarn
I haven't tried that yet! ❤️🧶🧺🐭
If it’s something like bernat blanket then I’m sure it’ll survive a wash but something like premier parfait probably wouldn’t.
I use a lingerie bag but now, I may give it a go without one (obvi verifying it’s safe, first)! This would be so much simpler. Is it just the camera, or does the little mouse look darker after washing/drying? Was he soiled or literally just an experiment? I’m so nosy, feel free to ignore me! Thank you! ☺️🫶🏻🧶-Lisa
Haha! Thank you, Lisa! I do think he looked a bit darker! Maybe he was dustier than I thought he was! 🤣
NO HE'S NAKED
🫣😃
Burh it is a PLUSHIE not a “ toy”
Lol!! Thanks for the correction! 🫡
Elise, I was worried the little guy mouse would come out discombobulated but thankfully he came out ok!
I'm so glad you did the experiment for us because I sure would sit here & cry if my amigurumi would get ruined after all the work put into making one😅❤❤
I was a little worried too! 😅
