  • Can you put crocheted amigurumi toys in the washing machine and dryer?
Well to be honest I’m not sure, but this little guy is taking one for the team and he’s agreed to be our guinea to help us answer this question once and for all.

When my daughter was little, she had a Gymboree plush cat that she loved. One day she got sick all over it and her car seat. The toy label said to "wipe clean only", but I knew that would not get it really clean. I put it in the washing machine and dryer, it turned out fine. Seventeen years later, we still have it. I would suggest putting the toy in a lingerie bag or pillow case during washing, to keep it from getting fuzzy.

I normally just place my amigurumi in a pillow case and wash it with the rest of the clothes, then place them in the dryer on the cold setting

When you put something small in the dryer, throw in a dry towel and it will absorb some water and reduce the amount of time for the smaller item. You might have to dry the towel on its own for a couple minutes afterwards but better to over-dry a towel than your handmade items. I do this with my crochet washcloths.

Yeah my sister in law should see this video lol. I made my niece a ballerina bear with sweet snuggles yarn. My sister in law made the mistake of washing it on hot to "sanitize" after she spilled juice on it and was really confused as to why the eye sockets loosened and the eyes fell out in the dryer on "heavy duty" lol. I was sooooo sad 🙈 she didn't bother to ask about care instructions. I remember telling her when I first gifted it. That was the day I stopped making plushies for gifts. Soooo much love goes into them ❤❤🥴

Yep, happened to a hand knitted pure wool cardigan I knitted for a friend's daughter. She washing it in the washing machine she put it in the dryer. I now include a label of the wool I used, so they can read the instructions. Also some people regard handmade items as cheap, giving the label, especially of expensive wool, might remind them, that just the material alone, has a value, let alone the time making it.

Me too. Most yarn can take hand wash with cold water setting, which modern washing machines have, (except perhaps the cheapest models) and the same applies to cool/cold setting of a dryer. But I have never got a cheap pillow out of a washing machine without it at least becoming lumpy.

If it's made with a washable yarn and firmly packed with poly fiber stuffing then there's little reason not to wash it. Wool or exotic fiber yarn, non-colorfast yarn, or some other type of stuffing might not launder easily. Paint/makeup features might fade but stitched and safety features should also be ok.

My kids get all my tester toys and they put them through tough times. I like to throw them in my towel load. I’ve put them in a laundry wash bag, a pillow case, and just tossed in and they’ve turned out fine. I don’t usually dry them in the dryer though. I like to lay them on top of it while a load is going. Occasionally one will get trapped in something and go through the dryer (usually highest setting for my towels) and it’s come out fine too. Some acrylics will become fuzzy though!

@@EliseRoseCrochet absolutely!! Also if you know anyone who has trouble keeping tension I'd love to suggest a hair tie. You put it over your middle finger and lay the yarn in front of the hair tie resting on your finger. Then you twist the hair tie once and loop it over your finger again. Its acts like a tension ring but chances are most of us have at least one random hair tie somewhere.

I would do the same with mine if it weren't for the fact that I love to use felt for facial features, sometimes I sew them on, sometimes I glue them. I'm just so scared that the edges of the felt will get ruined XS I guess that if the details are made with safety eyes of yarn as well, it should be fine.
