Hi John! I was just doing a random search for info on priming a galvanized auto body (Ford), and I ran into your channel. You're info is very useful, and informative. I thank you for the professional presentation.
Great video with the CORRECT way to paint galvanized metal. So many videos omit the etching step which will result in failure. This video should be top result for anyone searching how to paint galvanized metal.
Thank you so much for the professional video, John. Every other video I see on youtube discussing shop topics involves guys with shaved heads, menacing beards and tattoos, and foul mouths that never left high school. Your tact and intellect is appreciated!
Thank you for this excellent video. I would appreciate it if you can give me some advice. I need to paint galvanized metal brackets that will hold up deck railings. First I need to cut them down to size, so there will be untreated edges where I cut the metal. Is it necessary to use the rustoleum cold galvanizing compound on the cut edges? If so, will the acrylic primer then stick to the edges that have the rustoleum cold galv. compound on them? Can't I just quickly prime and paint the entire bracket after the clean and etch rather than applying the rustoleum cold galvanizing compound to the edges? Thanks so much.
Great video , on minute 2:55 you recommend to use a standard __________ paint I couldn't quite catch it. Could you tell us what kind of paint do you recommend. Thanks.
It’s actually the zinc that’s repelled the paint Need to sandblast or etch with acid Neutralize the acid then prime it with galvite primer.. then top coat DTM
How do I know if I have galvanized or just regular tin or sheet metal? I have an angled piece I want to put on front of roof of my shed and want to paint it prior to installing it on the shed.
Thank you for your video, it is very helpful! If I were to paint conduit pipes for curtain rods, what do I need to do to ensure the metal rings of the curtain rods won't scrape off the spray paint over time? Thanks in advance!
I have galvanized conduit pipes on the exterior of my house. The paint I have says it's 100% acrylic. Will that be fine to paint directly on to the pipe, or should I still use the metal clean and etch?
I have 2 5 gallon galvanized garbage cans I use for oily rags in the shop. I want to paint the red to specify they're sole function. So, clean the outside, etch, prime, and paint. Any other tips? thanks.
I have ALOT of galvolume metal siding I'm currently sanding all of by hand. Where can I get that etching chemical? Also what is a primer you recommend? I've looked into (metal primer water based) or a extreme bond primer. I'm using direct to metal water based paint to finish. I just don't want ANY peeling
That would be a great question to ask the manufacturer of the coating you are referring to. Look up the product data sheet on line and you may quickly find your answer... I do not know based on the info
I have a galvanized zinc table that someone scraped part of the finish off of and it is down to the shiny metal in that part. If I sand the rest down and spray with an acrylic primer, can I use ANY paint? Thanks.
Sorry for the delay......mest not sand galvanized metal as you will remove the protective zinc. Better to chemically strip it. If the zinc gets removed to bare steel then prime that area with Cold Galvanize spray made by Rustoleum...comes in a spray can
ive been looking for a patina green 5v crimp for a witches cap that i'll lift in place and hopefully never roof again because of how high on the house it'll be. problem is i can find a patina green 5v in my area either local pick up or delivery. i can get galvanized, but should i sand the primer like they do to help the paint stick when painting a car? what kind of paint will last 30 years or as long as the factory paint?
I've read on several online sites that specialize in selling galvanized steel that vinegar can be used to etch the galvanized surface prior to painting
Apple cider vinegar is what I’ve used. It’s more acidic than white vinegar. The acid etches the galvanizing so something like rustoleum ’rusty metal primer’ will adhere longterm. I learned this in the 1980’s and to my knowledge no galv I used it on failed early like straight painting over galvanized does. I’m actually trying to find some info right now on diluting muriatic acid before painting a beginning-to-rust galvanized roof that’s ~20 years old. I’m hesitant to use one of the excellent water-based galvanized primers because it’s unclear how well that will stand up to the FeO2 and would rather use the known to work ‘rusty metal primer’ in those areas while still insuring it remains adhered to the clean galvanized. I suspect that muriatic acid washing will get rid of some of the rusty surface while prepping the galvanized areas but I have not done this before. At this point it seems nobody else has, either🤷♂️
I put 3 coats of acrylic outdoor crafting paint on a wind turbine..painted Red,White,& Blue...i cleaned with alcohol...how do I seal it... spray clear??? Any advice ? So the paint does not peel., it looks weak & thin? Thanks.
Hi John, thank you for this video. I was wondering if you could kindly give a layman's explanation as to what etching means exactly. I know it sort of means an acidic burning, but how/why is that significant in relation to paint prep? Thank you.
The paint needs something to hold on to so the etching roughens up the surface. You can use vinegar but it’ll take a while. Add a tiny drop of dish soap to overcome surface tension so the vinegar sits as a sheet of liquid instead of droplets.
John, thanks for a very informative and well done video. Question: I have a very special Willys Jeep vehicle that has been in the family for 69 years and my Dad made his own cab for it and he used galvanized metal and the paint has always flaked. Is it too late to use this product you mentioned? My son and I want to make it ready for yet another painting. Thanks, Joe Stokes, Idaho Falls, ID
+Joseph Stokes Hi Joseph I suggest soda blasting to remove peeling paint to bare metal. Soda blast should not hurt galvanized surfaces. Talk to your local car paint seller and let them know you want to prime galvanized surface
We're wanting to apply paint to the outside of a galvanized 8' stock tank to make a stock tank pool. We also want to apply armor pond shield epoxy to the inside. We were going to sand the surface, wipe down, etch with 100% white vinegar, prime and paint. Do you think this would help for paint and epoxy adhesion?
@@joshluvsla we etched the outside with vinegar, primed with kilz for galvanized and painted with black exterior paint. No pain peeling at all.. Added a drain valve and left the inside as is. No problems with anything and it still looks great! We may add a pool liner next year.
mr john ...years ago in the mid 90's i had to paint some galvanized metal (they were panels for a billboard sign) i cant remember exactly how we did it but we cleaned the panels with gasoline... and we mixed some chemicals in the paint (it was zinnzerbullseye i think) was xylene or toulene or maybe both.... is this process still used and if it is do you recall how to do it...
There used to be a lot of dangerous "old school" ways of doing paint work. Primers and paints have improved dramatically over the years....do not revert to the old ways! Gasoline was really never a good choice as it leaves and oily residue that would cause delamination of primer from substrate>
If I’m painting a design directly onto a galvanized steel coffee table, what paint will work best? Do I have to use a primer? We wanted the metal to show around and through the design.
You can use any acrylic and then coat over it with waterbased polyurethane....several coats will protect the metal and paint from wear. If this is for very heavy use like in a coffee shop or restaurant. You can coat over with a bartop finish of epoxy by System Three Epoxy
Yes, a quality acrylic should do just fine......the clear topcoat will protect quite nicely. If the table is to be used outside, be sure to use an exterior grade of topcoat with lots of UV (Ultra Violet) protection to give extra life to the colors underneath....especially primary colors, which are prone to fade.
Since my last reply, we have capped some beams with stainless and primed/painted. After sanding with 180 for "tooth" we used acrylic primer and acrylic topcoat at the beach....still doing very well with no delamination
Hello Mr. Peek. I have a question for you. What in the world could I use to paint my galvanized steel Oldsmobile. Paint is nearly gone from all over and rust is taking the place of where there was once paint. ( I can't Afford) to have it painted by anyone. I want to do something to this car to help it's looks. (I can't even Afford) to sell it off for scrap or Buy even another used car. The car is good, under 100,00 miles for a 1995 . Just the body is Ugly. Thanks for reading.
I have a barn sided with galvanized metal that was painted without proper prep so now it is peeling and looks terrible. Most videos are only showing work on small objects!! What can I use to 1: remove the peeling paint 2: prime with proper product 3: repaint with proper paint
Plug the gloves and eye protection. It’s over done. Reminds me of a joke… Two guys are in the bathroom peeing. One finishes walked the sink and starts washing his hands. Use a waterbased polyurethane . There are many brands out there. Varathane brand may be easily found at home stores

Tremclad/Rustoleum makes a primer for Galvanised metal I am going to give a shot.
Yes, I always recommend priming the cut edges with a zinc rich primer and then coating the whole surface with an acrylic primer

Or use vinegar to clean

Galvanized steel can't be painted because of the zinc in the metal not oil film...The spay paint ur using has 93% zinc in the paint...ur tip stinks!
Waste of time...use either aluminum or stainless steel!!!
Zink is self healing though
