Thats a tough one because when the saints went to england they hated punks and the punks hated them mainly cauce the saints looked like the just walked in off the street which was so cool because you knew they came from Australia. They were pre punk and pre grudge .
@@dionisius79 wrong. This sounds like tons of indie bands from today. Of course, they can all be said to have lifted ideas from the Saints. Examples... strokes, Arctic Monkeys, any number of Britpop bands from the 90s, The Hives, etc, etc
I'm 64 now. The Saints were and remain one of my favourite bands. Very sad to hear of Chris' passing. I wish I'd seen them live. Condolences to Chris' family and former bandmates.
I saw the damned with the saints supporting the at the Coogee bay (Selinas) the saints didn't sing stranded the damned came on straight away and sang stranded . unbelievable. Yep you missed a great band . They were too cool too be cool.😊
One of my favourite bands, favourite song! Chris Bailey's voice is incredible. Ed Keupper is another of my favourite Aussie songwriter-guitarists. Thanks to The Saints for forever changing the world's musical landscape.
Great band in their heyday. Chris was the coolest. Bought me a beer after a gig at the San Miguel in Sydney, had to be about 1979. Spent half the show smoking and giving the mic to fans! Great times.
Blend of Chuck Berry and brass? Yup Keith's input with Bobby Keys sax with horn and trumpet ( can't remember their names but they were there for Sticky Fingers too) riffing along with the guitar is pure Keith. If you know your history this song was for possibly a ' major' label signing them or expressing interest. They ran a mile on hearing this. Australian bands have a fine tradition of imploding when offered the keys to the gate in America. Going back to Dragon and then Midnight Oil, Hunters and Collectors and others the whole business side and fake shmoozing were a step too far. They imploded with laughter and dread I think. The Angels got a shot twice only to be cruelled by other events. They rocked and American kids couldn't get enough of them. And Doc was something else. ACDC and INXS won America with sheer bloody mindedness and confidence in themselves. Crowded House did schmooze well. Plus the heavyweight help and support. Don't get me started lol. Forgotten what I was talking about.
This is an Explosive Bomb-Blast of Awesome with an aftershock of Brassy F**K-Yeah!. I'd seen Chris-Baily-Saints and Ed-K-solo many times in the 80's/90's but the the crowning moment was hearing this song during their brief reunion at the Nick-Cave-curated "All Tomorrow's Parties" Festival in 2008. I nearly hit the roof in excitement, even though it was an open-air gig. Play this once a week to beat depression. If I'd written this song I would have retired, on the basis of "How-do-you-beat-that?". Spankin'.
I get the impression they were more visible in Australia than the Ramones were in the US back in the 1970s. A lot of the great underground bands from Ohio were noticeably influenced by the Saints.
The first three Saints albums are a must have. All three are GREAT because they represent two geniuses shining together for that brief time to record them. Like a shooting star, then ....gone. Like Radio Birdman's first three albums, and Wire, The Cure, Killing Joke, Midnight Oil, Eno, ACDC, INXS, The Angels, The Ramones, Talking Heads and many others. Great bands first three albums ie before they were commercialized and/or over produced. Raw and direct to our ears. Yes please every time.
I actually feel like "Private Affair" is low-key their best track, but who can choose and what's the point -- watching this vid is so inspiring. This is what youth and rock & roll is all about.
This is as essential as it gets - great tune, great clip, great snarls, great brass, great lyrics, great playing, great Ed-ness. I can't wait to see the Aints next month at the Manning Bar!
Yep, it is still about as good as they get. Right up on that plane where you think it is the best song ever, (except for maybe another two or three that you can't separate for utter awesomeness). Nothing else like the way it just cranks from start to finish, just getting bigger and bigger until they just decide to stop and check out with four big honks on the horns!
while playing this song my cat just came and placed himself on my lap looking very cool. now song is over and he wants some food. he said he wants to eat it out of the can cause he's feeling kind of punk now.
Aussie Punk n Pub Rock Perfection ... commentary on the so-called 'consumer society', before we even added the term to our vanicular ... luv the brass section ❤️
9.00 am, just finished a night shift and frazzled...Now I feel like Jesus Christ has just opened my front door to welcome me home....As clouds part in the sky a bag of speed falls from the heavens, through the holes in his hands into mine. Finally finding this song after so many years of searching, it’s even better than reading the bible ten times.
+Marc M. damn straight. I read somewhere they turned down money and opportunities from some record execs that wanted them to change their image visually early on to try and cash in on the more traditional punk look. Good on em for sticking to their guns, true artists through and through.
Original *non American punk band. Ya know, Stooges, Dolls, Velvets, Ramones, Modern Lovers, Suicide, Richard Hell, etc... all a little before (I'm) Stranded. But yeah the Saints are Fuckin awesome.
+Joshua Ballard Demonstrate that to me please. Bios on both bands have them starting somewhere in the murkiness of lost time in 1974. That's all a bit fuzzy. Here's what we know. The Ramones first recordings, the "blitzkrieg bop" single, was released by Sire Records in January 1976, followed by their album in Feb '76. "I'm stranded" came out about 6 months later (and about one month before "new rose", "anarchy", "white riot" etc.)
+Joshua Ballard Came across this: " The one band (the Saints) didn’t beat was the Ramones, a fact Kuepper was crushed by: when he first heard the debut album by the New York pinheads a few months earlier, he knew everyone would see The Saints - a bunch of teenagers from provincial Queensland, fronted by singer Chris Bailey - as the copyists."
One of the best and certainly most under appreciated and way ahead of its time rock songs ever.
Never mind a great punk band, one of the great bands of all time, this is rock and roll people.
RIP to one of the greats. The originators of punk. Sad loss. You be remembered by those who know.
I do agree totally
That's a matter of taste, dude. I love them both.
I think YOU are mediocre.
Yes, every band on planet earth before 1976 was the originator of punk.
One of the best punk rock bands ever. Period!
AMEN!
HECK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats a tough one because when the saints went to england they hated punks and the punks hated them mainly cauce the saints looked like the just walked in off the street which was so cool because you knew they came from Australia. They were pre punk and pre grudge .
Yeah, The Saints were dong pure punk before the world caught on and had even called it punk. By the time the world caught up they'd already moved on.
@@tgrfraw2009 PUNK ROCK WAS EVERYPLACE
Can't believe this is from 1978. This could be released today, complete with video and promo photos, and no one would be any the wiser.
Absurd! It's the opposite: this music is impossible nowadays!

The best brass riff in rock music.
First band to blend punk with brass? Magnificent on every level. Sad loss Chris Bailey yesterday. One of the great Oz punk bands.

@@jessenapfkuch1676 well, yes, The Saints did do an Otis Redding cover too.....

You're kidding? Where are you from?

What a magic song! These guys were unreal. Gotta luv em
All the talk about where Punk started. US or UK. Solid case for this band from Australia. Grong Grong also in the mix.
Fantastic album ! What great song, sound & singer ! Aussie legends , these dudes !!
Vale Chris Bailey - your brilliance never waned.

Great blending of brass and punk. They did lift Clarence Carters “looking for a Fox” as inspiration for the brass riff.
Mucho, breve, y muy, muy bueno!!este disco en mi opinión es lo mejor del punk, rock, soul,.. Increíbles... Un super 10!!!
One of the most underrated bands of all time. And this song is a HIT and is catchy as phuck. ⚡️🔥❤️
