Company of the Week US Xpress | Trucking Answers

  • This week we take a gander at US Xpress as the Company of the Week. They have a very low starting pay and it just Georgia overdrives down the mountain from there. Truckers should get more for detention than $12.50 after 3 hours. Truck drivers deserve more than $50 a day for layover. These trucking companies have a huge turnover and have no idea why. Well, maybe unpaid vacation time is a factor. They seem to have no clue. I go over US Xpress student pay and US Xpress experienced truck driver pay. No food during truck school and the bus to orientation round it out, not to mention the cameras. In my humble opinion, there are much better places to drive. This is just another trucking company feeding on new people.

One of their trucks backed into me at midnight, scraping my front fender. Minimal damage. Driver left without notifying me. They tracked that truck down. Long story short, I got a $1300 estimate. 3 weeks later, I got a check for full amount. That's the only dealings I had with them.

I noticed a driver throwing his personal affects out the window of his truck. Me being nosey went over to talk to him. I remember the first company I drove for where we got paid detention. It was $9 an hour after two hours but that was in 1997. The company also had weekend variance pay to get drivers to work the weekend since company policy was 2800 miles a week and home on weekends.
The Weekend Variance pay was if you worked the weekend you got enough miles to make at least $250 or they paid you the difference. If a driver got empty on Friday and had to sit until Monday due to no fault of their own they got paid the $250 just to sit the weekend. Twice in six years I got the whole $250 otherwise you'd see the difference on my payroll sheet. Best to my knowledge that was the only company doing that. When I left I had had a lovely dispatcher who came from a trucking family.

Mark I really love your videos
It brings to mind Asian my videos he's constantly going to City Hall fighting for our rights but I really think you would be the best spokesman out there. 24 years on the road myself and I was also an instructor license 96 guys myself. This needs to change driving for free sitting around for free thank you for mentioning this topic

When usx took over the account I was on years ago, and we were beginning elogs , the corporate trainer told us to save time to not log in for pretrip so we could save time. Instead, drive to loading dock and get Bill of loading and do pretrip. It only gets worse.....

I was going to try there dollar general account but the numbers were so vague with the earnings after I was at orientation, I baled on them because they said I needed to do 3 weeks training because I never worked for mega carrier during my career that started in 1994, Makes no sense to me but they can keep the job trying to treat me like a rookie.

Thank you, Mark! Love, love, love the Crap Company of the Week! I can't believe how horrible these companies are treating their drivers! Wonder why they can't even feed their students. That sucks!

Heard from a few of their team drivers that they make $1200-$1600 a week. And get some decent miles, 5000 minimum. And that’s from people that have had a month or 2 experience. Haven’t heard much about home time.. .23 a mile for teams and .41 for solos.
Apparently they are looking for OTR mainly

I drove for a Sub Company of them (Total Transportation of Mississippi) and the eye down the log constantly. If after your daily restart where you are not on duty the second the 10 hour clock is finished, they start calling and messaging you like crazy. One morning I must have had about 30 voicemails within 2 minutes and about 50 unread messages on my DriverTech. All from Dispatch. When I requested HomeTime, my dispatch would ask; "Why do you need HomeTime for?". There were times I had my pay docked and placed OOS within the company. To get insurance and have a passenger, ALL FORMS MUST BE NOTORIZED!!!!!!!! Dispactch docks your pay with authorization of the Terminal Manager if you dont drive the way they ORDER YOU TO DRIVE and it could be anywhere from $25-$500. Also, they send to Orientation by CRACKHOUND to Jackson,Ms. and put up in a Motel 6 in Pearl. The closest place to get anything is about a mile walk. Breakfast at the Motel for Total drivers is a small pack of 2 sausage sandwiches (about the size of a half dollar) and a small milk....... ONE PER PERSON!!!!!!!!! They share terminals with USX and they are in the middle of nowhere.

Knight is not really a bad place other than the pay. Go to Lakeland, FL terminal and apply. Good place to get experience then move on to private carrier.

Mark, I’m an experienced driver. US Xpress hired me as a solo driver when I signed up for team driving. After completing the orientation I was given the keys to a truck without proper training on the tablet. What should I do?

What about Knight? Yesterday, I got offered a company driver job with them. Driving reefers. Orientation Monday down in Kansas City. They offered to transport me there on the crackhound (I know, not a good sign) or reimburse me for my gas (so I'm driving there). Once there, I get my own hotel room, which is a good sign. Road test and orientation is to be quick (I guess only three days) and then I'm off with a trainer for four weeks. They made the best offer given my experience (CDL with one month driving). They offering seven cents more a mile than the one that was in second place of the companies I've been considering and who had given me a solid offer.
Another nice thing about Knight is that their pet policy allows you to have up to an eighty pound dog. I'd like to eventually have (after training) a female Golden Retriever, though I've been cautioned about having such a big dog that notoriously sheds.
I've had other offers from other trucking companies. One would pay more than the one that is second on my list (as mentioned above) but they admitted that they couldn't guarantee I'd get the miles I would get from the second or Knight. That and Knight paid four cents more a mile than them. Another trucking company did pay more than the second but they have a strict no-pets policy and didn't pay as much as Knight. I've been told to contact XPO and that they offer more per mile than they say they do on their website (66.4 cents a mile was someone's comment in one of these videos' comment sections whereas it says only 42 cents on their website). If their website is the correct number for XPO, I'd make more with Knight.

The low pay actually isn’t the worst thing about US Xpress. They flat out lie to you. More than half of my paychecks were incorrect, and it was hours on the phone on hold to get it fixed. They’d say it’ll be fixed on the next check, then it wouldn’t be, and then that check was wrong too. They once paid my co driver wife for less miles than me for gfs same trip. Absolutely the worst company I’ve ever worked for…
